This guy thinks Red Ventures is running a charity. The reason why corporations can justify paying GB's salaries is because their accountants tell them that they are generating enough revenue for RV and are probably worth keeping around as long as that continues.

I can't believe I need to say this, but just because content is free to watch, doesn't mean that it's free to produce. Do you also go into Twitch streams and yell at people to stop subbing because it's all free anyway?

They obviously know that the Premium offering is currently thin. Subscriber pushes come in waves(unlike some Patreons where it's constantly shoved in your face) and now is a low point in the cycle.

If you feel cheated when shows aren't for you, stop subscribing yearly and teach them a lesson by going monthly instead so you can cancel ASAP. It's a weird move for how cheap $35 a year is, but that easy exit option has always been there for those that cling to the paying customer defense as if they're prisoners.

Your personal opinion doesn't matter because it's their awards and not yours. It's crazy to say that certain games are undeserving to win the GB staff's GOTY based on whatever criteria you use for games that you like.

The more people say it isn't funny, the funnier it gets. Thank you for your service.

My worry with edited QLs is that it might unintentionally lead to more meandering full QLs by staff because the boring and unnecessary parts will be taken out anyway later. If a more tight QL is the objective, maybe just try to do that through stricter execution of what you planned to convey about the game.

Honestly, Best of GB took care of a lot of these problems regarding YouTube pandering, but that's gone now.

I think some people are downplaying the importance of premium subs to GB. RV aren't running a charity. The reason that corporations continue to keep GB funded is because accountants decide that they are a justifiable investment. GameSpot is proof of what can happen to the staff of something that performs below expectations. The support of paying customers is just as important to the existence of GB as it is to Nextlander.

Even IGN has trouble keeping their employees from leaving so it's not surprising that GameSpot has it even worse.

Whether it's 3 days from now or 3 years from now, GB will have no problem gaining financial support from fans if they happen to leave RV, so I say take as much money for as long as possible from the corporation. RV subsidizing their operation results in a relatively cheap $3 or $5 a month for fans. Nextlander's Patreon tiers (where the good stuff starts at $10 a month) is a preview of what GB could charge in the future if they go down that same path (although I personally believe Jeff could also just go with only a single $5 a month option because he doesn't want to deal with the friendship simulator stuff associated with paying more money).

All I've read is people wanting the crew to step it up and stop slacking. Nothing wrong with that.

You just mentioned how there are varying opinions on their output. You obviously don't like it that's why you said they are slacking, but many people like what they're getting now so they disagree that GB is slacking and they believe that they are getting their money's worth.

Let's say that they finally do things that specifically appeal to you and you are satisfied, I guarantee that a whole different bunch of people will complain that they are being ignored and will hate the new content that you like. That's just how it is.

Do unsatisfied people feel trapped here because they can't find any worthy alternative to GB? Everyone from the "glory days" is gone aside from Jeff so it's never going to be less painful than now to cut ties with your nostalgia for the past, if that's what's keeping your hopes up. I don't treat support as a weird obligation so dropping things I don't enjoy is easy, especially if it's as cheap as GB premium. If the thought of missing out on content torments you that much, then GB isn't actually as bad as you think it is.

This was a good, informative interview. At this point, anyone continuing to publicly speculate about drama behind the scenes is simply doing so in bad faith.

People naturally avoid saying things that make themselves look bad. Speculation tries to fill in those gaps and not everything has to be labelled as done in bad faith.

For example, I think it's highly improbable that the three didn't plan on launching a Patreon together just in time to cover E3 before they left GB. They claim otherwise, and that's fine. It's not a big deal either way.
