I started as a thief for my first character but found it frustrating to play when you got to enemies and bosses that couldn't be backstabbed, so I put that char on hold and rolled a warrior while I got used to the game. Looking forward to going back to my Thief though. Something satisfying about parrying/riposting and backstabbing enemies. I also haven't heard many good things about DEX scaling which makes me sad.

If you don't want to stay hollow, your only other option is to stay offline. If you play online and in human form than you have to take the good with the bad.

Demon's Souls was the same way. One of my favourite things in that game was piecing together the story from talking to NPCs and descriptions on weapons, armour (and spells?). There actually is a lot of lore you just have to seek it out. So far it is looking like Dark Souls is following a similar path and I am already excited for my second playthrough to help flesh out the lore some more.

I am on PS3, I haven't tried to invade anyone but have been invaded twice. Every summon I have tried has worked and every time I have started being summoned it has completed.

@ShadowMountain: Did you manage to get a hat? I just got home and loaded up my characters. The only character that had an Official's Cap in storage was my SL 97 character. So unless you want to grind to SL80 I won't be able to join your game to drop the hat.
