I was at the FullIndie conference a few weeks ago and a Steam guy in charge of developer relations gave a talk.
Basically, the issue with Steam curation boils down to Valve not wanting to hire any curators. That seems to be their line for now -- they emphasized the small size of the company (something like 250 employees?) as an excuse, which from the outside sounds like a big fat joke, considering the amount of money Steam moves and the fairly sizable cut Valve gets from each and every sale.
They seem hellbent on peddling their Silicon Valley-infused automation fairytale land for now. I hope they don't find the whole issue blowing up in their faces in the future, because it seems a bit bleak.
I dunno, Sony has curators and dog shit gets on their platform just fine.
At least with Sony, the dogshit sometimes makes it through, it's more of an exception, whereas with Steam, the dogshit is most of what shows up on Steam every day.
Brad failed to mention this game's biggest hook or special mechanic - when you die they replace your generic agent with another and the dead body gets controlled by the mummy - you then have to face the zombie agent, who has and uses all the weapons you were holding, in order to get them back. I don't know how well that works (haven't played the game) but it sounds neat.
I found it to be a huge pain in the ass. When you take control of the new agent, you basically go back to square one - you lose all of your upgrades, abilities and weapons which is pretty annoying. It's even worse when you die in a difficult area because that could lead to you being stuck for quite a long time trying to get through the area without dying and then also kill the previous agent (which is itself a pretty tough enemy) and if you die again, it'll create another zombie agent which will make it even harder to do it. I feel like it just makes death a huge hassle that can completely derail the game and totally halt your progress for potentially quite a long time until you get back to where you were once you finally get your stuff back.
More of the same long Jeff rant about any FPS that doesn't have jetpacks. Yay.
Meanwhile everyone is enjoying PUBG... maybe you can see the benefit to realistic movement where people aren't just flying around.
If I hadn't heard the same rant really like 4-5 times now it'd be less annoying.
Except that PUBG isn't even an FPS. You spend most of the time in it in third person and Jeff's even said that he hates using first person mode in that. It's a completely different kind of game.
I find it weird that Dan didn't mention that the one character with the baseball cap is just Pierce from Saints Row. Like, they don't hide or anything, the character appears in like the first few hours and they just straight up say that he's pierce and show his backstory, which is basically just the alternate universe events of Saints Row 1.
Anytime someone mentions something with weird URLs I always get reminded of Ben Mathis, who's a super professional 3d artist who has a ton of industry experience and has written a ton of really useful and really good tutorials and his website is still https://www.poopinmymouth.com
