Ni No Kuni should be showing up in the mail for me today. If it's half as good as Dragon Quest VIII I'll be leaping for joy. I beat DQ VIII last year for the first time, and haven't been able to find a suitable followup. I tried Dark Cloud 2, Rouge Galaxy, and Radiata Stories, but none of them came close to matching DQ VIII.

If you're favorite open world game is Minecraft take the next step: Dwarf Fortress. And never look back.

Don't forget about Stuttering Craig... What's he doing in there? Insane... Where's Spoony, Angry Joe? Linkara? Was this a Channel Awesome Production or something?

I second Dragon Quest VIII. I lost myself more in that world than Skyrim. Valkeria Chronicles is another solid recommendation.

Picking one as your first experience is a tough one. I'd play Eschalon Book 1, it's inspired by old CRPGs, but is a bit shorter than most and therefore is a bit less of an investment. It works on modern machines, and you can find a character editor, to make your life easier if you have trouble. Also, it's fantastic.

So the Trilogy is just a repackaging, it doesn't fix any issues?

I'd always add tracks to Oblivion's sound folder from a variety of RPG sound tracks. Eschalon Book I, Etrian Odyssey, etc.

@Chrjz: Can anyone verify this? Is this true for the trilogy?

Working some 40 hours on a game in the first RPG Maker for the Playstation, and having the third party memory card I saved it on die.
