Game of the Year 2015

Looking back on 2015, I really didn't play that many games but I did manage to play enough to make a top 10 list.

I would be remiss to not mention the game I actually did play the most this year: Puzzle & Dragons. As of this writing, I am 855 days into playing that game with not signs of stopping anytime soon. Despite how much I play this game, I felt it didn't exactly belong on this list (even if I did manage to fit Dota 2 again). The complexity and depth of this game is still as good as it has ever been and the additions they have put into the game, such as 2 player co-op, are generally great. But at this point of my PAD tenure, I have a hard time really quantifying my enjoyment of the game enough to warrant it on this list, let alone ranking it.

List items

  • I haven't had this much fun playing an actual video game in a while. I am also a fan of the Metal Gear Solid franchise so I knew this game would definitely be on this list. I didn't necessarily expect it to make the top of the list but no other Metal Gear game has played so well. Despite my qualms with the story, the gameplay alone was reason enough to pour 140+ hours into the game, and that's not even 100%ing everything.

  • Hey, Dota 2: Reborn came out this year so this totally counts. In all seriousness, I still played quite a bit of Dota this year. The amount of big changes this year added a lot to the game, while not changing the core of it. Despite me reaching 1000+ games and hours, I will continue to play more Dota for the forseeable future.

  • This would've been my game of the year for games I didn't actually have due to how much I loved watching people such as PangaeaPanga stream. I did manage to get a copy of the game and it is fantastic playing all the crazy shit people make.

  • I love music games, especially challenging ones. I played a lot of music games this year, but this was definitely my favorite. The combination of analog knobs and traditional buttons coupled with a mix of standard Bemani, doujin, and vocaloid proved to be a winning combination. The visceral feeling of turning those knobs to do "slams" continues to be one of favorite feelings. Out of all the music games I have played this year, this was the one I have sunk the most time into and will continue to do so.

  • I don't really know what I was expecting going into this game. It looked promising but I ended up loving this game. The platforming felt superb and precise, the visuals were stellar, and the challenge it provided definitely earns the number 4 slot.

  • I really didn't expect to play as much FF14 as I did in the beginning of the year, but I did. This was the most fun I have had with an MMORPG in quite some time, sucking up a good 4 months worth of time out of me.

  • I'm a sucker for a good city builder. The disappointment of the latest Sim City game left me wanting more and Cities: Skylines was the game that filled that void. It did not manage to hit all the marks of a Sim City game, but it hit the most important ones. I did manage to lose a weekend of two because of this game.

  • Left 4 Dead but with classes and loot, what more can I ask for.

  • Far Cry 4 is a great game just like Far Cry 3. Like Far Cry 3 however, I managed to burn myself out doing the open world thing of trying to do everything. The gameplay is just as great as the predecessor and the additions they made are solid, I just wished I actually cared for the story.

  • I like this game, but I wanted to like it more. It screams style just like the old school DJMAX games, but it just did not grab me as much as they have before. There are numerous small issues I have with this game but I still thoroughly enjoyed my time playing it and will probably continue to chip away at it. It was also a great excuse to finally use my Vita.
