When I first saw the work-in-progress pics of this, I figured it was supposed to evoke an attitude-riffic fast food mascot of the 90s. Like with "Turbo Dogs" or "Mega Weinerz" written underneath, stamped on paper bags or styrofoam cups full of potentially fatal processed junk. It's awesome either way though.

Actually, the 90s mascot thing easily covers games too. I could see this being the boxart to something like "Proactive Pat-Dog vs. Professor Precarious!" for the Sega Mega Drive.

I don't know why I read that as "Sega Mega Davis".

It's been a bit tough on monthly subscribers lately. I coughed up for another month approximately a week before the acquisition announcement, and got comparatively nothing content-wise for the next three weeks to justify that decision. I know they were moving, but i'm sure members can understand me not wanting my monthly subscription to be a 'gamble', so to speak. So that soured the concept for me just a tad. I coughed up again the day before yesterday, and at this point i'm quite glad i didn't opt for a yearly subscription, as the early months of the year seem too tumbleweed-esque for me to justify continuing with regular monthly payments. I might just as well wait for a build-up of subscriber content so i can get my money's worth further down the line.

I know it's only $5 per month. It's nothing, really, but at the end of the day it's still my money.

Eh. I haven't bought anything in GAME for as long as i can remember.

In other news, ShopTo continues to be awesome. Ordered a game on Friday morning, got a photo of it being dispatched in my inbox two hours later, had the game arrive Saturday. They are bloody good at what they do, and unless GAME suddenly blitzes their prices, i don't see how you can be any better than that.

The Middle-Man's progressive decline into irrelevance and redundancy. Sure that's a bit hyperbolic, but i really like the sound of it.

Also, the $1million+ mark really hit me. Maybe Double Fine's asking price was a bit too conservative, but nevertheless i think this shows a) that the games industry is an absolute juggernaut of colossal size and reach and i forget that half the time, and b) how huge support for an independent developer with a consistently eclectic and highly-regarded back-catalogue can be. I mean, $1million in about a day and a half for anything is mind-blowing, let alone that amount arriving as a response to Double Fine proclaiming, "hey we're going to make a small-scale adventure game, contribute what you want to help us out". It's on another level to In Rainbows' pay-what-you-want concept, as this scheme exists on the other end of the development cycle, for something that has far more moving parts.

For independent games developers with a strong brand and personality, i think this is a promising step forward.

This whole lag issue has got to be on a console-by-console basis. I have some frame-rate dips, but that's my worst complaint. No crashes or freezes. Granted i'm only at 48hrs/4.5mb, but i guess i'm feeling quite privileged to not have encountered any major difficulties - it's GOTY of the year for me, PS3 inclusive.

@LordAndrew: Hm, strange. I can definitely see a difference. I'm on a 13" MacBook with a 1280x800 resolution running Safari. Oh well, not much i can do about it i don't think - thanks for letting me know it isn't a universal thing though.

EDIT: Ah okay it's more forum posts, comments and subtitles for things. i can see the main page now and it looks fine, if a little big on the font size. I think the 1pt. smaller standard font they use or whatever it is for posts etc. makes the letters a little blurred. i would zoom in but then everything becomes MASSIVE ha ha.

Can we maybe have an option to turn off smoothing, unless i'm missing something on my end, please? It looks flashy and all, but i don't feel i'm stepping on all-knowing toes by saying that legibility and readability are a top priority, above appearance - the new font look is harder to read, and takes more time to scan over. It doesn't have the clarity of the smooth-less font the site used before. Sorry if this has already been said - i haven't got time to read the whole thread, and i have a 500 error on the home page so i can't see the new look.

Killzone 2 was the moment i realised i was sick of FPS games. Took it back on the day i bought it! I went from massively hyperactive to completely irritated within the space of half an hour.
