A JRPG retro throwback that doesn't quite replicate Square's past quality 2

NOTE: There are spoilers, mostly light, in here. I tried to keep it vague as there is no Spoiler Block functionality for reviews. I felt it was relevant to include them to why I scored it what I did. Read at your own peril. When I heard Square Enix created a new division to make classic JRPGs (with a game inspired by one of the GOAT JRPGs Chrono Trigger no less, a series I badly missed), I was pretty stoked. Squaresoft was at its greatest imo when it was pumping out new IPs as well upgrading the ...

The Greatest Multiplayer Game of all Time 9

When you make a bold claim like I have in the title of this review, you can reasonably expect push back. After all only the Sith speak in absolutes, or so Star Wars teaches us.But when you have played as many different video games as I have (easily over 1000) for as long as I have (over thirty years) I think I can safely say I have a good idea of what good game looks like. Or in this case a special one. To me DOTA 2 is one of the very best games I’ve ever played, and the best multiplayer game ha...

Mediocrity of Heracles 2

When I was a NES playing youth, it used to really aggravate me how many Japanese franchises never made it to the States. Now as I’ve gotten older I’ve learned the hard way that in most cases the game companies had a good reason not to bring a good number of these titles over. For every Fire Emblem we missed there are 20 pieces of junk I'm glad we did.Glory of Heracles is one such JRPG series. The DS game is the first released in the US, but the fifth in a long dormant series that used to run in ...

A short and Inexpenisve trip back in RPG time 0

(EDIT: 1/30/2013 - Changed Star Rating to reflect removal of half stars from the new Giant Bomb Site. Revise down to 2 stars from 2.5)Retro gaming and 80’s homages are not new or rare concepts in video gaming, but few take it as far as parody JRPG Breath of Death Vii does (and its’ companion sequel Cthulhu Saves the World). This bite sized throwback 8 bit-esque RPG comes at an extremely bite sized price to match.Gameplay and ControlsBreath of Death Vii appropriately controls very simply as you w...

Limbo is a Revelation in Design 0

(EDIT: 1/30/2013 - Changed Star Rating to reflect removal of half stars from the new Giant Bomb Site. Revise up to 5stars from 4.5)In the ever increasing high stakes world of Video Games it's becomingly increasing rare that I encounter what seems to a brand new idea. While it may not be the most challenging or addictive game ever made, Limbo's unusual focus on minimalist monochromatic design and narrative ambiguity creates an intense immersive experience in gaming that is not too be missed for P...

Monkey Island meets Uncouth Loutish British Detective 0

(EDIT: 1/30/2013 - Changed Star Rating to reflect removal of half stars from the new Giant Bomb Site. Revise down to 3 stars from 3.5)Tellgame game's Hector: Badge of Carnage Trilogy of Episodes is a pretty straight forward Point and Click old school adventure game (s). Badge of Carnage consists of Three Episodes , each roughly taking 2-5 hours to complete, which as of 2012 can be purchased as a package. It draws pretty heavily on the Monkey Island humorous formula of old, meaning there are oddba...

Bird is the Word 0

(EDIT: 1/30/2013 - Changed Star Rating to reflect removal of half stars from the new Giant Bomb Site. Revised up to 3 stars from 2.5)Harvey Birdman: Attorney at Law is a point and click-like adventure for the Wii based on the Adult Swim (Cartoon Network's late night adult programming) TV show of the same name. It's very short, easy, unusually funny for a game, inexpensive and probably best reserved for the show's existing fanbase.Gameplay & ControlsHB: AL has very minimalistic controls and th...
