Most Underrated Games

List items

  • This old series got buried beneath the deluge of WWII first-person shooters. The unique squad tactics and Band of Brothers-inspired story and characters made this series stand out, however, and Hell's Highway added an art style and refined cover system that really made it shine. By the time this much-delayed game came out, however, the market seemed all but finished with the WWII FPS genre.

Notable level: Having your bazooka squad take out a church tower-mounted machine gunner.

  • As a fairly significant diversion from the series' previous games, Conviction suffered the wrath of stealth purists and was hurt critically by complaints of the short single-player length. The truth of the matter is that not only did Conviction bring the series a much-needed style, atmosphere, and an awesome cover/targeting system, but managed to actually make the player give a damn about the characters and story. Less Tom Clancy nonsense, more Badassery.

Outstanding moment: Rage-fueled mark-and-execute rampage after leaving Grim's office.

  • I cared more about this game's story and characters than any I've ever played. It's unfortunate that the combat got stale for most players, because traversing Bright Falls proved to be an extremely engrossing and surreal. Layer on top of that gorgeous lighting effects, numerous subtle film and TV references, and an air of Twin Peaks mystery... I love this game.

Never forget: The combat light mechanics integrated into an awesomely metal on-stage battle sequence.

  • This PC-only game adequately fills a sorely lacking genre: the large-scale, real-time action battlefield game. Or... something like that. The extremely visceral combat is what really makes this game, although micromanaging your army is awesome too. Despite being fairly ugly and janky, you'll never look back the first time you headshot someone off their horse with a javelin while riding full-speed toward them.

Awesome: Slaughtering your attackers by the dozens as they attempt to siege your castle.
