My Favorite Games of All Time and What's Wrong with 'Em

(in no particular order)

Sometimes we like to put games on pedestals and refuse to accept their faults. Hell, I know I did when I was younger. Nowadays I realize that no game is perfect and every game has quirks (however small they may be).

Going through my list of favorite games ever and trying to rip them apart has been quite interesting. I urge everyone to go play some of their favorite games and nitpick. You take the good, you take the bad, every rose has it's thorn, and all those other great metaphors.

List items

  • My only qualms with Banjo-Kazooie is the inane amount of things to collect. Notes, Jinjos, Jiggies, eggs, Mumbo skulls, feathers, GOLDEN feathers...when you're 12 and this is one of the only games you own you don't notice it as much, but on a replay last year I was astounded over how much crap this game wants me to keep track of.

  • When the game came out I wasn't in love with the multiplayer or co-op, but four years down the road I'm able to spot another problem with the game: the fact that it wasn't the last Katamari game. This would have been a great stopping point for the quirky franchise; the more games they add to the collection the less different and innovative they seem.

  • I'm having a pretty hard time thinking of something that puts me off about TF2, and all I can think of is the Territorial Control maps. The rounds always seem too short to really accomplish anything. Also, I hate the 'drop' system, mostly because I have terrible luck with these things and can't be on all day waiting for a hat to drop.

  • I just wish there was more content they could fit on that little golden game cartridge. The game is pretty quick by Zelda standards. Even the final Skullkid match is a cakewalk with the Fierce Deity mask. One of these days I'll replay with and completely ignore the Deity mask and get my ass trounced by Skullkid.

  • As with all of the MGS games, once you're pulled out of hiding the game turns into a clunky third-person shooter.

  • The game needs the ability to re-challenge NPC Pokémon trainers like in the sequels. Also, I didn't have a link cable as a child so I had to rely on other kids at school. Other than that, great game.

  • My blood boils when people dismiss Plants vs Zombies as 'just a casual game'. Will taking an hour or two out of your day to kill some time with PvZ label you as a dreaded casual for the rest of your life? Will your nerd credentials be at stake? Are you afraid playing a game with bright colors and smiling flowers will turn you into some kind of sissy? No, it's okay. Go back to your Tony Hawk and your Gears. You're missing a great game.
