Better late than never.
The first event to finish this weekend was the Europe Ranking Event, Ultimate Fighting Arena 2018. AngryBird ended up taking 1st place at the event with Zeku of all characters. Previously, the highest AngryBird had placed was 5th at Sonic Boom, so this was quite a big win for him. With AngryBird rocketing up the EU leaderboard, Akainu has been knocked out of qualifying for the EU Regional Finals. There is only one more EU Ranking Event for Akainu and other players to qualify for the finals at EGX. The other big thing to happen at UFA was Luffy getting his runback and winning against Problem X after getting demolished at EVO this year.
Back in America, Summer Jam 12 was happening and the new breed of American players were out in force. The two new guns that I've been following for awhile now, Toi and Nephew, both placed well at 2nd and 4th. Punk ended up winning his first CPT event back in the arms of Karin. He's now in the running for the NA regional finals, but still has some work to do if he wants to qualify for Capcom Cup via global points. I'm curious to see if he gets consistent and winds up in Capcom Cup or not.
In Puerto Rico, Caba wins yet another LATAM Ranking Event in First Attack 2018. Caba just sucking up all those ranking points. There was absolutely no change in the LATAM leaderboard. DR Ray and Doomsnake earned some points and are creeping towards the bottom of the leaderboard, but they still need at least a top 3 finish to have a chance of qualifying. There are still 6 LATAM ranking events left, so lots of chances for the LATAM leaderboard to change. The biggest surprise of the tournament for me was CJ Truth placing at 2nd. He knocked Smug out in Losers Final and took a set off of Caba in Grand Final, which is impressive.
Finally, Final Fighters China happened and Oil King got his first Premier win. That's not surprising news to me. I mean, he got 3rd last weekend at Esports Festival Honk Kong which was arguably a more stacked tournament. Oil King has been a strong, consistent player all year long and that deserves props. There was some controversy about the seeding of the brackets, which was apparently none and bracket placement was purely random. Not a great method for making a bracket, but everyone who ultimately made Top 8 beat strong players to get there.
The bigger news to me was Momochi's performance at the tournament. He got 2nd place in the end, putting himself in a much more solid position on the global leaderboard (from 25th to 18th). He beat Fujimura in Winners Semi-Finals and in the double jeopardy match in Losers Final. Then in rematch against Oil King in Grand Final, he busts out his Akuma. Ultimately, he resets the bracket and takes it to last game, last round against Oil King. A much stronger showing for Momochi than he's had so far this year. I'm sure there will be a lot of people will see this a Momochi heel turn. But, I'm super excited to see Momochi playing a shoto again.
Next weekend, we have 2 ranking events and a premier. Street Grand Battle 2018 will be the last EU Ranking Event this year, so we'll have those auto-qualifiers solidified for the EU Regional finals that happen later in the month at EGX. Treta Championship is happening in Brazil, so I expect Brolynho to win that one, but I would love to be surprised. Dreamhack Montreal will probably be a huge event with tons of Americans and Asian players, as well as the usual smattering of EU players.
Some final closing notes: Sorry about the lateness of the post. I normally try to get this out on Monday, but it was a holiday here in the US. And then I worked on most of it yesterday, but I ended up losing that progress. As a result, I don't have the "lost to" section on the tables. This takes a lot of time to make, especially when larger tournaments insist on using Challonge instead of Smash.gg, which has better features for larger tournaments. If this is a missed feature, please tell me and I'll continue doing it next week. Otherwise, I'll save my time and continue to omit it.
