Best Level-Up/Experience Systems in RPGs

List items

  • My all-time favorite experience system of all included the Materia system. If I could make the perfect game it would probably combine Materia with the Sphere grid and enable players to reach crazy high levels like in Disgaea. But this game works wonders.

  • Love the sphere grid...maxing out characters is too much fun!

  • Similar to the sphere grid, I also loved the License Board. I wish we would see more graphical experience systems.

  • All three of these games (six if you count the psp and ds remakes) are spectacular. For those that love level grinding, this franchise is the best around. Max level jumps from the standard 99 to 9999...that's an extra 9900 levels! Makes for a lot of re-playability and countless hours of game-play.

  • My dad and I spent countless hours when I was five years old bragging to one another about how high our gold and experience counts were in the original Dragon Warrior on the NES.

  • While not a typical RPG, and not a very deep amount of character progression (sure there are weapon proficiencies and various abilities, but still), it's still fun to mow through skag after skag, bandit after bandit to make it to that next level. It also helps that leveling up recharges both health and shield.

  • Reminds me of the Dragon Warrior/Dragon Quest series as far as character progression, but there is another set of levels to gain: Shadow Classes. Nine classes for five separate shadows plus five characters to max = fifty sets of 99 levels to gain.

  • As far as the final fantasy series goes, level progression is normally pretty standard. Gain experience which tacks onto a counter and eventually allows you to earn another level. Tactics comes along and throws a wrench in the system, gives you a new type of experience (Job Points), and uses the JP to purchase new abilities for each class until you've earned all of them at which point the job class is mastered. It's absolutely brilliant...I love it.
