@kingoficeland: It looks like the Feb 14 Unprofessional Fridays video didn't get tagged with a category. Until that gets fixed you'll need to turn off "Hide Trailers in Latest" and then load the Latest category in order to find it.

Every so often a video doesn't get correctly categorized and sort of ends up in limbo like this. They usually catch it pretty quickly though, so hopefully it'll start appearing correctly soon.

Testers Wanted Testing Complete

I spent some time this weekend working on adding support for iOS7's background transfer API. Based on my initial testing it's looking stable, but rather than hitting publish and crossing my fingers I thought I'd ask for a few volunteers to help put the new code through its paces. If you're interested, you can join the TestFlight team using the following link: <link removed>

If no major issues are found during testing I ought to be able to get an update through review and into the App Store in about a week.

@baillie: I'd love to, but that call is sadly out of my hands. Apple requires that apps use HTTP Live Streaming when playing even modestly-sized videos over the cellular network and Giant Bomb's site doesn't currently support the protocol.

The main workarounds are to either use the YouTube quality or to download the video because both of those will work regardless of how you're connected to the internet. Neither one is a perfect fix, but hopefully some combination of the two can work for you.

The video doesn't currently have a type in the database, so it's showing up under Latest & Popular, but not Subscriber.

@mlarrabee: Skipping the home/news/patchnotes screen would allow folks to get at the videos a little bit faster, but right now I feel that the ability to easily get information in front of the entire user base is a little more important. In situations where the app isn't at 100% (like the recent API key generation issue or when Android 4.4.0 had performance problems with 60fps video) keeping everyone up to date is a high priority for me.

@magicjoef: There's been a little bit of API weirdness following the big site update, including a period of time where API key generation was busted. If you linked your Giant Bomb account during said weirdness it's possible that you were given an invalid API key, which would explain why you're not seeing any videos. If that's the case, the fix should be as simple as unlinking your account and then re-linking it. If that doesn't do the trick, please let me know and I'd be happy to look into it further.

Regarding Chromecast

As some of you noticed, Google took the Chromecast SDK out of developer preview yesterday. Now that things are more or less finalized, I took a look at the docs and, unfortunately, it's not as much of a drop-in solution as I would have hoped. Although I would like to support Chromecast right in GBVB, it looks like it's going to be a large-ish project, and the amount of time I can devote to GBVB is a bit limited right now.

The good news is that, just like Yatse for XBMC (see page 2 in this thread), there are apps that will let you send any video you'd like to your Chromecast receiver. I know that AllCast and BubbleUPnP both have free trial versions and I suspect that there are more apps like them out there. If you have one of these apps installed, instead of tapping the play button to start a video, long-press on it and you'll be given a list of video players. Selecting a Chromecast-enabled one should have you sending video to your TV lickety-split. I know it's not quite as convenient as having Chromecast support built-it, but hopefully it's a way to get you up and running today.

@dvydra: Taking advantage of iOS7's support for proper background downloading is high on my to-do list, but it's a large-ish project and I haven't had a ton of time to devote to GBVB lately. I definitely want to get this in the app, but, unfortunately, I can't offer an ETA right now.

The current version of the app does support the limited amount of background downloading that was allowed under iOS6 and below, but that only allows for 10 minutes of downloading while in the background. It's not great, but it does help a bit.
