Star Citizen (new versions to test)

Dwarf Fortress (Steam - Linux)

Starbase (new versions to test)

I'm sure there will be any interesting games being released this year.

I would like to see game media be much more diverse. It feels like it doesn't matter which game site you read because the articles are more or less about the same games anyway.

For example there were huge amount of news and articles about NMS before the launch but other space games like X4 or In The Black has hardly got any attention at all. Less hyping and giving the games same treatment and amount of attention would be very welcome.

Maybe it has got technically better but to me the technical issues has always been the smallest issues in this game.

Unfortunaly there is still pretty much nothin I like about it. The gameplay has been a huge disappointment from the beginning, atmosphere is lacking, the city feels lifeless, etc.

If you have not bought it I can only recommend to buy pen&paper Cyberpunk RPGs instead.

Not in any specific order ...

  • Grand strategy
  • 4X
  • MUD
  • Management sim
  • Isometric CRPG
  • Space sim

There are so many old and new games in various of different genres that it is hard to list the most favorite ones.

@spacemanspiff00: Those "books" are actually just fan made collections of the lore posts and short stories CIG has been releasing in their website for years. I prefer to read those posts in EPUB format on my e-book reader.

A good way to know what other teams has done is to follow their roadmap, monthly reports, videos and of course testing PU alpha versions.

This is an excellent topic and this very same problem has been bothering me some time now. My youngest child is now five years so he requires still a lot of attension and in practice I have only about two effective hours in evenings.

1) Software development (multiple of projects and studying new skills)
2) Electronics
3) Reading books
4) Computer and tabletop games
5) Miniatures
6) Woodwork
7) Sport (jogging, walking and gym)

One of the biggest improvement was bying a e-book reader (KoboGlo HD) couple of years ago. I have been able to read books in gym and while walking, travelling and pretty much every moment I need to wait something. This has been fullfilling my need for reading books and also theory part of studying new tech skills.

Otherwise doing everything during daily two spare hours has been a stuggle. I just needed to prioritize and use those hours for software development and occasionally playing Star Citizen.

Although, I think my youngest is old enough to start spending time with my other hobbies. We have started to do electronics and playing tabletop RPG (Hero Kids) and other tabletop games. That has helped a lot.

So, my advice is to buy e-reader and not to try save time from sleeping hours.

I can't say which one would be the best but here's some I have enjoyed a lot during the years:

X
Wing Commander
Europa Universalis
Crusader Kings
... and many more

It is nice to see many good francises are still doing great and getting new games.

Not a new or innovative feature but I was happy to see the game Mechajammer using manual Notepad instead of automatically updated objective list. Such a small feature makes you observe things more carefully and take more attention to surroundings and discussions.

In my opinion games are holding hands way too much these days and it is refreshing to see steps taken back time to time.

@rorie:

Feature roadmap will not be abandoned. Release View got shrinked to show only next patch instead of few patches forward. It has always showed features as "Tentative" so the lists has changed depending on blockers etc. Release View has been interesting to follow but pretty useless in practice. After they added Progress Tracker to Roadmap end of 2020 we have had much more detailed view of the development.

Last September Rich Tyrer talked about to change the focus on making features first to SQ42 before integrating to PU, so that change has been known for a while.

We have quite many sources to follow the development:

  • testing alpha versions
  • weekly roundup
  • weekly shows [ISC (+sprint reports) and SCL]
  • weekly lore update
  • monthly SC / SQ42 reports
  • monthly Jump Point
  • roadmap (release view tracker and progress view tracker)
  • SC chat and forums
  • outside sources like interviews, reddit, twitter, etc.
