Top 10 Games 2016 Edition

Well 2016 eh. That was a year wasn't it? Sweaty balls to 2016, but at least the games were good and my buddy got hitched so it had some great things to get us through it. Here are some of my things...

List items

  • Now I like the Hitman games but it's fair to say it's been a while since they have captured the classic Hitman feeling of being left in a playground to figure out how to get to and eliminate your target your own way. This game really recaptured that old Hitman feeling. It's inventive and funny and the possibilities presented in each level seem endless.

The release model ensured it was also in my play list throughout the whole year with it's episodic release and fortnightly one time only targets. Every new piece of content became an exciting event and the variety was great as was the the games use of existing levels in new and unusual ways. Taking out Gary Busey for instance was a very odd high point.

This game is still surprising me and keeping me entertained every time I go back to it and I'm constantly finding new things to do and kill with.

Well done IO Interactive this number one is really well earned.

  • All right so maybe Super Metroid didn't actually come out this year or last or the last 20 odd but I only discovered it this year so there.

Whenever I've gone back to old games of this era they've always felt throwaway to me. 5 minutes of fun then put away for another 10 years but this was different. I've always been curious about it as it looked like the Nintendo game that would probably appeal to me the most and I was super right. It is simply fantastic. Deeper than I'd imagined and it really got it's hooks into me right from the beginning.

There was something that reminded me of the original Tomb Raider to it. The solitary feeling of being alone in a strange place and being left to explore and conquer your environment is still one of my favourite things to do in a video game and this is basically the essence of that. An all time top 10 game for my list but it didn't seem fair somehow to put it at number 1 because of it's age and established legacy.

  • This was basically 30 years of wish fulfilment all rolled up into one game. No other gaming moment this year beats being slowly lowered into the bat cave suiting up as Batman along the way. It's only about an hour and a half long but I must have spent 6 or 7 hours digging into every nook and cranny and draining every bit of content out of it. This just about justified the price of VR for me all by its self.

  • Crikey, how to talk about this without mentioning spoilers... it starts off as a great first person shooter then quickly ramps up and goes places. New mechanics are introduced and then left for the next before they get boring and the game just builds and builds until the finale. All this and I didn't even touch the multiplayer.

  • It had a few low moments (that last fight for instance), but the great stuff outweighed the bad and this was a fitting end to the normal run of this beloved franchise. I couldn't put it down until I'd finished it and the epilogue was superb.

I look forward now to the adventures of Chloe Fraser.

  • This tickled all the right 80's movie nostalgic spots on me earlier this year and caused my kids to spend weeks yelling like Conan, which filled me with fatherly pride.

The great variety of classic action hero characters with all of their individual skills and the all out chaos and destruction made for some very fun 4 player co-op sessions with the family. "GYEEEAARR!"

  • This just piped in under the line. It was £3.99 in the PS4 January sale and it's ace.

It's a 2d, semi turn based, stealth, ninja assassin, puzzle game sort of thing. It's hard to describe but definitely worth the price and very hard to put down.

  • This was one hell of a thing. I really enjoyed the Witness despite all the pretentious nonsense. Remove all of that though and you just have a superb, inventive puzzle game set in a beautiful mix of environments that kept surprising me with every new environment and puzzle mechanic.

  • Wish I'd had more time to put into this over the Christmas break. It's been great so far and I've been thoroughly sucked in by the mechanics. Though if you didn't care for the first this probably won't be changing any minds.
