It wouldn't be as big of a deal if it was an additional option.  And it will probably serve the casual gamer who is simply wanting to jump into an online match, by themselves, fairly well.
 
But removing the ability of already existing communities to control their own servers, choose their location, and be ensured of the quality of their connections is a big deal for a PC gamer.  Yes the reaction has been overblown to some degree.  But to characterize this as anything more as an attempt to 1) charge $10 for 3 map packs and 2) neuter the ability of players to control their experience, primarily with respect to mods, but also custom servers in general giving communities total control of every single aspect of the server, is a mistake.  Its just another restriction upon player choice motivated at least in part by greed and a misplaced desire to simplify the experience to satisfy the lowest common denominator.  PC gamers know what to expect from PC games, and if they wanted it otherwise, Games for Windows Live would be successful.  Its not, for a reason.
