My Five Favorite Games I Finished in 2018
- Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice is an experience. Senua’s journey is both heartbreaking and powerful. Actor’s Name brings a level of vulnerability and strength that’s absolutely needs to be believable for this story to work. Thankfully she knocks it out of the park.
- NieR: Automata is a game that can only work as a video game. What starts out as a straight forward action game turns into a profound question about personal perspective, dogmatic ritualization, and oddly enough, what it means to be a video game.
- God of War takes all of Kratos’ cartoonish rage and finally gives him real human consequences. Kratos’ relationship with his son is touching but it’s his wife Faye as a character that really captivated me.
- Nights in the Woods has this mundane quality to it that’s so refreshing and endearing. I finished this game about ten months ago and I still think about Mae and her gang of misfits all the time and genuinely miss seeing them. Not many games can do that.
- Marvel’s Spider-Man isn’t about Spider-Man, it’s about Peter Parker, and Insomniac knowing that makes all the difference in the world. Couple that with an impeccable swinging mechanic and it’s easily my favorite Spider-Man game ever. And maybe one of Peter Parker’s best stories ever told.
