My Ten Best Games of 2014

2014 was a weird year in games. Some might say disappointing, but I'm not really one to be gloom and doom about things. If anything, it showed to me that Sony and Microsoft need to step up and start spending real money on first and second party titles if they don't want to be completely eclipsed by PC.

Here's my Top 10 for last year. As much thought has gone into this, I don't really think I could refine this into any particular order.

There are games that I haven't played yet. That's unfortunate, but what are you gonna do.

List items

  • I don't know if I think that this game deserves GOTY. It's an incredibly solid title that doesn't overstay it's welcome, but I'm not sure if it had the sort of knock-out punch that I feel other titles I consider GOTY have had.

  • I'm not by no means a Southpark diehard. This game went above and beyond with it's humor, artstyle, and attention to detail. It makes new spins on the turn-based RPG style without seeming too outlandish. The fact that the game barely came out makes it that much better.

  • I loved Far Cry 3. I was deathly afraid that this game would be a cash grab, barely iterating in a "new" environment, and I was pleasantly surprised. Although it clearly comes after Far Cry 3, it shows that the developer took the time to figure out what worked from the previous game and refined it to a shiny polish.

  • I literally don't know why I love this game so much. As someone who's been playing Pokemon since the beginning, I'm probably fallen into Nintendo's clutches forever chained to the Pokemon franchise. Hell, it's why I bought my 3DS, which just so happens to be the Pokemon XY 3DSXL. Although this game makes me bite my tongue as Game freak continues their Paula Abdul-esque, "Two Steps Forward, Two Steps Back" development style, I can't help the powerful nostalgia I get stepping yet again through Hoenn.

  • I must admit, I haven't actually started this one yet, not yet finished with the previous Shadowrun Returns, but from what I here from my friends this expansion/sequel doesn't disappoint. There is nothing that I don't like about this game. It's writing, art, and XCOM-esque gameplay just drives me to salivate. Shadowrun is just about close to the perfect setting for me personally.

  • Eh, you could technically make the argument that this game doesn't qualify for this list, both having not properly release in 2014, nor did it go up on early access this year, but time and time again this game proves to be one of if not the best early access games. The game updates every month without fail, and the developers are constantly adding new ways to change up how prison is run.

  • Not really much to say. The most refined Kart race quite possibly made. Roster could be better, but they have what people need.

  • Proof once again that Kickstarter isn't necessarily a hive of scum and villany.

  • This game is fucking gorgeous. I don't know why I keep playing. I can't stop playing. Somehow this justifies my iPhone 6 plus purchase.

  • Wild, Cuhrazy, and glorious.
