Gears 3 tied up almost everything neatly so there's little room for continuing that story. They would have to do a prequel trilogy, probably pendulum wars, or come up with an entirely new threat. It also occurs to me that they're on the planet Sera so after all that happened on that planet that made it inhospitable they could just say heck it and leave for a new planet?
There's still all of the backstory involving Queen Myrrah and Adam Fenix that's left untouched. But even still, I think I'd be good if they instead start a new story somewhere else, set with a new cast of characters ect. I guess I wouldn't mind if they do start a prequel trilogy or something stupid like that, as for as much I enjoy the characters of Gears, it's still the gameplay that's kept me playing. Would be kinda neat if they had one game told from the locust perspective or something.
In any case, while it will still keep the name, I'd like to ideally hope that it'll still incorporate a bunch of new ideas, both narratively and gameplay wise, that it'll manage to simultaneously feel both new and familiar at the same time. I guess it's such a weird roadblock that I'm certainly at the very least interested in seeing what they go for. Because even if they do try for a safe and simple traditional Gears game, even that outcome leaves me curious as to how they'll try to justify it from a story perspective.
The deal with Myyrah and Adam is one of the few remaining questions left, that and just who Myyrah is, whether she is human at all and how is she able to command the Locust. That disk Adam gave Baird probably has the answers but the contents were never shown!
The way things ended in 3 left me the impression that all Locusts were wiped out (but you never know) and even if there were some left, what reason do they have to fight since their queen who commanded them to fight and the Lambert who pushed them out are dead?
The way I see how it goes is they jump a few hundred years, give humans time to rebuild and grow, a brand new threat appears ala Halo 4's Prometheans and you play as a descendant of Marcus Fenix. Boom. Exclusive money making software secured without messing with the canon.
