Game of the Year 2012

Difficult year to come up with a best list considering the variety but I like to think this list works for me.

List items

  • It isn't that Virtue's Last Reward was just the best game experience I had over the last 12 months, it goes beyond that. I think it may well be one of my favorite game experiences ever and given what it is up against on this 2 and 3 being better playing and written games both, it says a lot about the experience it delivers. I'm new the visual novel genre so this was something different and that was exciting to experience. A lot of this had to do with the fact that I got so heavily immersed in this world immediately following up 999 with this game but it all meshed together to be something really special. I loved going on this journey and call me crazy, but this is my favorite game of those released last year.

  • For me, when I think about my favourite games at the end of the year, I'll often think of the moments and distinct memories. When I think of Journey, it is only positive, amazing visuals, music and carefully crafted gameplay makes the actual playing of Journey an experience rather than trying to unlock some sort of achievement. It's drive to get to the end speaks to so many video games, but this one does it in such an elegant way.

  • Sort of goes back to Asura's Wrath only the writing on display here is second to none. It's probably the best written video game ever and it needs to be considering the relationship it conveys between Lee and Clementine. A moving and emotional experience and I can't wait to see more games aim for similar things.

  • I haven't actually finished XCOM but that is only really because I am absolutely terrified of what is going to happen to Zero and Stacks after Oxford got taken out last mission. Yeah, the care I have for those characters is beyond what I should have for any game character but there was about 4 weeks there where I would show up to work completely stressed over the thought of this game...it's great.

  • Speaking of things that are barely games. I was going to put this lower on the list because of the fact that there isn't much interaction but then I thought, no, that isn't really what this is about. The game of Dear Ester is taking the fragments and information you learn while playing and working it out in your head, there is a rich and deep story there for anyone who wants to find it and you'll also be presented with some truly beautiful sequences.

  • Yeah, it's barely a game, but that's okay because it was still one of the most memorable experiences I had with a controller in my hand all year. I think back to my memories of this game and they're only positive. Again, crazy Japanese storytelling really hits the right notes for me sometimes and this is basically the king of that.

  • I'm a little surprised by how high I've put this one because I don't think it's a great game and it certainly isn't as good as it's predecessor, but I just loved travelling through the various worlds in this one and it was just a lot of fun to play. It's unlikely we'll see a third game at this point which is a shame, but if we do I'll be the first in.

  • This was a surprise, I didn't have a great reason to get this game other than it was the guy who made Yakuza and hey, I like those games. I'm glad I did because there is some genuinely great stuff in this game that takes it so far beyond being just another third person shooter. The story is cheesy in that Japanese way I love and the ending was so much fun.

  • Mass Effect 3 was where the series unfortunately fell a little flat for me. I don't think this was because it was a bad game and it certainly wasn't because of the ending, it just more had to do with my not being as engaged in the story. That said, it was great to finish the journey finally and I'll remain a player of the series while they keep making games.

  • Okay, so this one is a little bit of a cheat because the main game didn't come out in 2012...however, the addition of what Gods and kings offers is so unique that it had me playing for a long time. If the main game was released in 2012, I'd probably put this at the top.
