Those that Missed Out (2010 onwards)

This isn't an honuorable mentions list - it's a list of games that I believe would have made my top 10 in the years I've been doing top 10s, had I played them the year they came out. A lot of these I ended up playing in January, some I didn't play till years later.

The placement listed is where I think they would have placed had I played them the year they came out. That placement should be considered as a single thing, games below that came out the same year aren't compared to each other, just the list they would have been on. For example, 999 and Darksiders are both listed as 10 in 2010. That's because they're only being compared to the games that are on my 2010 list.

List items

  • 2011 Placement: 1

One of the main reasons I made this list was to give Dark Souls its due. It's straight up my favourite game, but discovering that fact only came part way through the game. I was stuck with a heavily degraded sword in Blight Town knowing that it wouldn't last for a number of expected battles with Quelaag. I knew that the Black Smith was on the other side of the map but set myself to make the journey. When I made it to firelink I found a number of new NPCs gathered around and something about that reminded me of an equally tragic tale, Waiting for Godot. I then continued to make my way across the map to the blacksmith and just marvelled at how beautiful this inter connected world was. I fell in love with this game and everything about it, it was a true moment of gaming magic for me.

  • 2016 Placement: 4

Final Fantasy XV took me by surprise. I wasn't (at the time) a big JRPG guy but I liked the modern fantasy look of this and the road trip aspect really appealed. Working my way through this game, I just found the whole thing kind of relaxing and a genuine attempt to capture friendship that I haven't really seen in a game before, particularly with my years of western RPGs. There were some frustrating bits, but when I think back to the experience, my memories are only fond.

  • 2017 Placement: 6

After I spent the majority of 2017 playing through 9 Final Fantasy games, I decided to start 2018 with another long JRPG. What I found was a deep and complex game design that rewarded digging deep. Also, a fun, engaging and at times, genuinely surprising story. I rarely go for story DLC, but I think I will for this game just because I want to spend more time in this world because the world genuinely interests me and I was just kind of amazed by the places this goes towards the end of the game.

  • 2014 Placement: 4

Oh the time I lost to this game, good time too. I was never really one for 4X games but I got this on special because I wanted something different. Months later as I set up my "you can only win by diplomacy or domination" games with every nation and a huge world I was just hooked on this virtual crack. Just one more turn...

  • 2016 Placement: 5

I didn't really care for the original Dishonored, I always found myself fumbling around with it and trying to pull off the precise moves required just ended up me bumbling and reloading a lot. I wasn't ready to give this one a shot until I heard some good reviews. Glad I did, this improves almost every aspect of the original game and adds some additional powers that made everything so much more satisfying. There are also some absolutely stellar missions in this game that expand the world.

  • 2014 Placement: 6

I was a huge fan of the Fables comic for almost its entire run, the only issues I don't have are the first 5. That said, it took me a while to get to this game because of a few life getting in the way factors. As a result, I decided to grab this one on disc after some incredible experiences with Tales from the Borderlands. Glad I did, this was another game where Telltale were firing on all cylinders. Some stellar character work, but it isn't only that, the design and music of this thing are great. Pity we will never see that sequel.

  • 2010 Placement: 10

This was the first Visual Novel I played and I was almost immediately drawn in by the twists and turns. At points it had me fiercely gripping my DS. A real page turner if you will, this kicked off me becoming a fan of the series which went through to conclusion. In fact the sequel VLR was even my number one game the year it was released although that was probably based on emotion of playing it so close to GOTY selections.

  • 2010 Placement: 10

Pure comfort food this one, I just couldn't help but enjoy the experience despite it continually feeling overly familiar, sometimes that is a good thing. Not every game has to be overly innovative, this one isn't, but everything it does is solid and it has a fun story and design.

  • 2014 Placement: 2

I love this game. This is one of my favourite games. This game resulted in me weirdly becoming a fan of Toad. My girlfriend gets concerned about my Toad obsession, I show her this game. She gets it because this game is amazing. It's hard to describe the pure joy that this game brings out in me. It has precise and careful level design, smart implementation of the Wii U controller and most importantly, it revels in what it is...especially when a title card for Captain Toad Treasure Tracker 2 comes up. I love this game. It would absolutely be number one on my list of 2014...only Dark Souls came into my life that year.

  • 2018 Placement: 2

This whole playing an RPG in January from the previous year thing isn't working too well when all three (XBC2 & FFXV as above) have ended up on this list. I should probably start to play them the year they come out instead so they can actually make the GOTY lists. I love this game, I haven't completely finished this game yet as I'm still doing the post game which, as it turns out is a sort of mini sequel to the game itself. I've never played a Dragon Quest game before, I want to play them all (well, at least V). When I was in Japan last year, I went into a Lawson that was rebranded Dragon Quest, when you walked in, it made the noise of changing areas, when you purchased something, it played the level up chime. I had not played a Dragon Quest game at the time so I did not fully appreciate how amazing this was. I didn't but any of the merchandise they had. Yes, I regret this.

This game is about as pure and JRPGs get, the story slowly unravels into something amazing. It is so relaxing to play and it never felt boring or overwhelming. This was pure joy.
