Some initial impressions on Phoenix Wright Trilogy HD

No Caption Provided

So Ace Attorney HD trilogy came out today. I have the first Phoenix Wright iOS port that they did years ago. When you first boot the game, it does a "checking for past purchases" thing and I thought, oh cool they'll check that I have the first Phoenix Wright and give it to me for free. Sadly that is not the case and only the first two cases from the first game are available for free.

I played through the first case, which oddly remains one of my favorite cases in Ace Attorney. The artwork is definitely better and is smooth and not pixelated however sprites still only have about 3 frames of animation. Menus are a bit sluggish and the frame rate drops a little during the camera pans. Snooping around online, apparently the HD collection uses the original GBA soundtrack as opposed to the remastered DS tracks, which is a bit of a bummer but not really a deal breaker. Also apparently the game doesn't have support for the iPhone 5's increased resolution so theres a letter box when you play. Some screens:

I'll probably buy the entire thing again at some point. I've played the first one several times already but its been awhile since I played 2&3. I barely remember anything about Justice for All other than the potential bad ending and how much I hate Franziska.

*edit: Just tried the "Everyone Object" social feature. Sadly the character limits are even less than Twitter.

Oh wow. Last I heard this was pushed to July. Awesome. I didn't play Phoenix Wright the first time around, and just recently got the first on my iPhone and loved it. Thanks for the heads up. Gonna jump on this this weekend.

@superkcross: Sorry, I'm going to take this opportunity to air some grievances since Ace Attorney hasn't come up in the forums for a good long while.

You're right to not remember Justice For All, because it is such a low point of the series. Apollo Justice is better than it in just about every way I can think of. Franziska's schtick just isn't funny at all, and even though the series' tone is goofy as fuck, I still think her flat-out whipping everyone from police officers to judges is absolutely retarded. It pushes it too far. At least Godot only throws coffee mugs like once or twice a trial, and doesn't punctuate every goddamn sentence with them.

And a lot of the court room scenes just seem more poorly designed. You know what point/objection you're trying to raise in regards to a testimony, but none of the objects obviously fit it, and then it turns out you have to present something that is only tangentially related to the character or event you want to be referencing, because they either didn't create flexible enough evidence objects or it was translated in an awkward way or something. And Edgeworth's inclusion feels rather forced, though frankly I think that's an issue with literally every Ace Attorney game past the first one, where they just have no idea what to do with Edgeworth when he isn't the primary prosecutor for the game. Franziska is still easily the least interesting or funny prosecutor across the whole series.

Also, I feel like the first main case (not counting the tutorial case with Maggie Byrde), Reunion and Turnabout, in Maya's village, goes on WAY too fucking long. I could be misremembering it, but I remember it was the first time in the series where I felt like pretty early on in the trial Phoenix had already proven it was just completely implausible that Maya could've done it or had any motive that didn't involve psychic possession, but instead of being exonerated, the judge is like "Well, unless you have a better idea, nobody else stands accused other than Maya, so if you fuck up she is still found guilty". But then, I guess there are lots of moments in the series where things are looking pretty good for the defendant on the last trial day but if you fuck up the judge inexplicably changes his mind.

I had just tried out this version of the game (big fan of the series) and hadn't even noticed that they music used was the original GBA soundtrack and that's kinda weird that it doesn't properly fit the iPhone 5's screen. The only gripe I have with it (which was mentioned before) is the low frames of animation and that the swipe between people in the court room is a bit sluggish. All in all if you want to check out the series this is pretty much the cheapest way you are going to be able to do so (assuming you already own a iDevice)

@bisonhero: I agree that JFA is probably the weakest game in the series overall. It introduced the magatama sections though, which was a nice addition. Plus I think the final case is arguably the best in the series.

The HDification on some of those images is creeping me out. When it's blown up like that the characters look odd, ugly and badly drawn. Not mad on the text either, it looks really stuck on. It's another easy way for new players to get into the franchise at least!

Getting the three of them for £11 is a bonus, but I'm a bit disappointed with the iPad version as it has a giant black border around it in portrait.

Game wise it handles fine. Just like you'd expect really.

I had however forgot just how annoying some of the 'logic' behind the questioning can be.

The judge should have been disbarred years ago!

@bisonhero: Franziska is actually my favorite prosecutor next to Edgeworth. JFA is the weakest AA in a number of ways, but she's actually a large reason why I still enjoyed it. I actually think Godot is a pretty lackluster character for most of Trials and Tribulations. It's not until you learn his backstory in 3-4 and then his role in 3-5 that he really stands out as a character, but that only makes up for so much.

Anyway, am I the only one that is kind of turned off by these HD graphics? They make it look too much like an amateur flash project. I'm sure the game is still great, but I think I'd rather just play the DS versions.

I just finished that. Pure insanity.

This is a pretty good deal for these games. I bought all 4 of the Ace Attorney games for DS last year and am still playing through them slowly. Had this been available I probably would have just got it. Either way you can't go wrong. Though I think I like the art on the DS version better than this stuff on the iOS version.

@bisonhero: I think most of your complaints are valid for the entire series and not just JFA (which I do agree is probably the weakest of the trilogy. Weaker than Apollo Justice..? I'd have to give it a replay to make that statement. That part where you have to determine who isn't playing their part during the song is preeeetttyyyyy bad). Even playing through Ace Attorney Investigations, I still occasionally had the problem of "I know what this contradicts, but I don't know what evidence stands for the contradiction" on occasion, though they've gotten better. The last case of JFA is pretty stellar though, with the obvious but still exciting revelation that your client is totally guilty.

On Topic: They certainly could have done... more to that art. While it is cleaned up, it's not any more detailed and that makes it look sort of bad.

It kinda looks like they just slapped on a high quality smoothing filter over the original GBA sprites. Maybe it looks better in motion?

@nezza: As far as I know, that black bordering only occurs on the retina display devices.

Personally, I find the art a bit off-putting, but it's overall a pretty competent port and much easier and cheaper to obtain than the DS carts if you don't already have them.

So just for shit's and giggles I dug out my original DS cart and took a couple of comparison snaps.

It doesn't look as bad in comparison as I first thought, and after a while you stop noticing completely. However, I do feel it looses come of it's charm as the artwork feels flat in the same way that a flash game does. I prefer the button placement of the DS version though, makes it feel like much less empty space.

I don't understand how people can complain too much about the visuals to begin with, for one it's OLD, two it's from the Game Boy Advance (or at least one of them is) and three tablet screens (and most phones now) dwarf the screens these games were designed for.

I've always liked all the art in Ace Attorney games, but that higher res art looks pretty half assed :( With the lower res stuff, it feels like they try to basically make every pixel they use count and looked good considering the hardware, whereas there is something a bit ugly and lazy about that new art. I mean, they probably had no time or budget, but it's not exactly very appealing to look at.

Yeah, the second game is my least favourite too. Although I actually do like Franziska, I just thought the cases weren't too interesting until they just go super intense right at the end.
