Games of the Year - Terrific 2012 Edition

Well, I did some thinkin', and this is what I ended up with. This'll be an odd list compared to others, I'm sure, if only because there's a bunch of glaring omissions in the way of actual 2012 games I played this year. Can look here for full disclosure, if you want! (A notable point of shame is that I finally acquired Journey late this month, but I never had the chance to give it a try)

This is pretty close to being the ONLY TEN 2012 GAMES I PLAYED listing, haha. Though I feel it's pretty strong regardless.

So, here we go:

List items

  • This game was a proper adventure. It's the first time in a long time that I've encountered a video game setting that felt FRESH -- I found myself actively looking forward to every new area, because I didn't know what to expect! The world looked good too, and was successful in feeling vast. Add in one of the greater soundtracks in recent memory, a memorable story with a bullshit twist (I mean that in the best way possible), a likable covey of characters, and of course, a significant and everlasting well of gameplay... and you've got Xenoblade Chronicles, my game of the year!! WAS THAT MELODRAMATIC ENOUGH?

  • Yes, this list is top-heavy with JRPG! Where Xenoblade managed to be fruity new take on the genre, Graces (FFFffff) is all the known quantities at their finest. As always, I'm a big fan of the battles in this series -- crank the difficulty up, and let the game beat the crap out of you until you emerge a master! On that alone, beating this game was some of the most fun I've had all year. But, hey, turns out there's a lot more to love here, too! Took me about 90 hours to finish my run of the game, and that entire time was fraught with good, clean fun.

  • Speaking of good, clean fun... there aren't many things less complex than Rhythm Heaven, but there are few things that manage to do SO MUCH with SO LITTLE. I played this. A lot. Probably more than I'd like to admit. But most importantly, a smile stayed on my face the whole time. And if that's not worth somethin', then... hey, I DON'T NEED TO EXPLAIN MYSELF TO YOU, MAN! RHYTHM UNTIL THE END OF TIME!

  • And with how much of THIS GAME I've played this year, I'd be remiss not to have it on my list somewhere. Turns out, I want it at #4! I just like this game, dudes. I played this entirely co-op with a friend by my side, and I'm sure that's coloring my feelings for it quite a bit... but hey, there's no denying how much fun I had -- and am still having -- playing it. GOOD CLEAN FUN, Y'ALL.

  • I finally played 999 for the first time this year, and finished it just in time to jump straight into VLR. I don't know if that's relevant, but there, I said it! There's actually not much I can say without spoiling anything here... so I'll just leave it at "IT WAS FUN. WILL PLAY MORE. TAKE MY MONEY. I NEED TO STOP ENDING EACH PARAGRAPH IN ALL-CAPS."

  • Shit. I mean... seriously. What the hell did I just play. Did I just give them money for the final episode and not feel remorse over it? Whoogahwoogah. Okay, so, Asura's Wrath is special, and defies all expectation, reason, and laws and manages to be something AWESOME despite being constructed entirely out of bad ideas. Also, Yasha's theme is going to stay in my head forever.

  • Another multiplayer highlight of the year! I'm an extremely casual fan of Magic, in that I understand the rules and have a lot of fun playing it, but I never want to fall into that rabbit hole of actually owning a mazillion trading cards. This game is a great avenue for cutting out the middle-man and just... playing the friggin' game. A bit more customization would be great, but really, it's got all I want anyway. And it delivers it all in an extremely slick package.

  • I love Persona. I love BlazBlue. There's some math in there that made it ACTUALLY IMPOSSIBLE for me to not love this game as well. So, yeah, I loved this game. A giant piece of fan-service that got me at every possible opportunity. I enjoyed watching P3 and P4 cross streams, and the story -- while I had some trifles with it -- led to a lot of interesting questions about the inevitable (right???) Persona 5. So, yeah, fun match-ups, good fighting... i's all good, son.

  • GOOD, CLEAN FUN.

  • I'll be honest here: I THINK I kind of hate The Last Story. Maybe. Pretty sure, anyway. It was so close to being something REALLY special, but it squandered pretty much every opportunity it had... and the "twist" (in quotes, yo!) at the end was just a little TOO dumb to be amusing. I heard some major changes happened to this game during development, and it shows: this game's a friggin' MESS. And I could probably ramble forever about how bitter I feel about it! But... BUT... taking a step back from my disappointment, it wasn't ALL bad. I guess. This game did some interesting things, and I did have fun going through it... enough that I think it's worthy of being in my Top 10, despite the aftertaste. It was certainly an event. BUT, GOD, WHY DID THA----
