Damn you RTS elements! 0

I need to admit, I have a huge man-crush on Tim Schafer. This probably came to a head for me with the release of "Psychonauts," easily the best action-adventure game on the xbox system and generally one of my favourite games of all time. Schafer has an amazing talent for not simply dreaming up and creating these fantastical worlds of psychic summer camp students or skeletal afterlife-travel salesmen, but in infusing these unbelievable worlds with very real characters and emotional interactions...

This really is the beautiful game, EA have got it down to a tee. 0

Wow, what a turn around the FIFA series has been since the launch of the Xbox 360. FIFA 07 on the 360 laid down the foundations for EA's ambitious new gameplay engine and FIFA 08, and last year's FIFA 09, have come very close to perfecting next-gen footy. Now FIFA 10 is here, have EA finally created the perfect footy game? Not quite, but it's still bloody brilliant.OK, since they are so minimal, let's get the few bad points out of the way first. The Manager Mode has some pretty annoying bugs at...

Like Dead Space and light guns? Great. 2

After much forethought and soul-searching, it dawned on me that my favorite game of last year may have been Dead Space. It came out of nowhere, had a deep and truly scary atmosphere, and some of the most entertaining gameplay I had in all of 2008. What I found most surprising though was in its story, which created a universe filled not just with pants-shittingly terrifying monsters, but also rife with deep political and religious intrigue. So I was interested to find that Visceral Games and EA...

A real shame. 0

From the "Best Original Game" award at E3 to the incredibly positive fan reception afterward, the general hype surrounding 5th Cell's Scribblenauts continued to build and build right up until its release. I, too, was pumped about the game and was even a bit worried about attempting to objectively write a review without letting my constantly growing Scribblenauts erection barge in a make a nonsensical mess of things. I mean, come on, a game in which you can type and interact with basically anyt...

Perfectly-timed, perfectly-wonderful and just plain perfect. 0

I am never in a hurry. It's that characteristic that produces my ease of lifestyle, calm demeanor and ungodly laziness. I watch television almost exclusively through DVR recordings, I shower at the end of the day instead of the start and I don't take out the trash until it mutates into a foul beast that I have named Gargath, whose only delight is the tears of children. As such, it should be no surprise that I do not play video games shortly after they are released, and due to this, I don't typi...

A solid shooter made more exciting by its great setting. 0

It has become apparent over the years that games which follow a particular theme run the risk of being cheesy novelties that aren’t worth your time. But Techland’s Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood, the prequel to the western shoot-em-up released two years ago, is anything but cheesy. Stepping into the boots of Ray and Thomas McCall as they maraud through the southwest feels appropriately badass and radiates with attitude. This hard-boiled premise is nicely blended with cinematic gunplay that, al...

The perfect blend of accessibility and depth. 0

I've made no secret of the fact that I think Nintendo's latest accessory, the Wii Motion Plus, is something that could really improve the Wii. It's really the first time that something has been released that could really substantially improve a platform wiithout the need for a completely new console. The device has already had uses in two games from EA Sports in Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10 and the excellent Grand Slam Tennis. Now it's time for Nintendo to put it's new toy to good use with Wii ...

Brilliant game, same can't be said about the servers. 0

It cheers me up every time I explain this game to anyone. It’s a 32 player, medieval era game of capture the flag, except the flag is a Princess. And to make it extra difficult to get away with her, the other team stuff her with cake making her a Fat Princess meaning it takes much longer to carry her back to your castle. If you don’t laugh every time you hear her scream “CAKE!” you probably never will. The maps are symmetrically designed so no team has an obvious upper hand. As you can see by the...

Holds its own in the online shooter genre and at a great price. 0

After a couple of modern day outings and an incredibly destructive new take on the series, the much loved FPS series Battlefield is going back to its roots thanks to Xbox Live Arcade and Playstation Network. The sequel to the grandad of Battlefield games, Battlefield 1943 launched in mid-June as a download only title for just £10/$15. Despite only having 4 maps and 2 game modes, the same fun and addicting gameplay ensures that EA and DICE's latest offering will keep you nicely entertained until...

For fans it's a rent at best, but for everyone else, skip it. 0

Over the course of my life I’ve spent a staggering amount of time quoting movies and one of the main sources for me is Ghostbusters. So when the new Ghostbusters game finally came out I loaded it up with a youthful excitement thinking that I was going to take a merry romp through my childhood. Unfortunately that excitement only lasted for about 10 minutes. Once the Ray Parker Jr. classic had finished playing and the fan boy joy of hearing Akroyd and company banter back and forth had faded I was ...

Not quite a knock-out, but still a fun and enjoyable game. 0

As a young man I spent hours in my living room committing move patterns and sequences to memory and no matter how hard my young gamer self tried I could never get past Super Macho Man. Now here I am twenty two years later, I’m a little bit older, a little bit wiser, my fingers have become lean arthritic gaming machines and I’m still sitting on a couch memorizing punch combinations and patterns and I still can’t beat Super Macho Man. So this review will only go up to that tanned contender and won...

Still fun, but really needs an upgrade. 0

Ever since the first Virtua Tennis game came out on the Dreamcast, the series has been the best tennis game available. Now, with games like Top Spin 3 really pushing hard to clam the title of the top tennis game, and also the upcoming Grand Slam Tennis from EA, Virtua Tennis has some serious threats to its crown.First, let me say that the biggest problem with Virtua Tennis 2009 is also its greatest strength. It has not evolved in any way over the last 10 years as the same fast, arcade gameplay i...

An absolute must-buy for all PS3 owners. 0

I had never played a game from Sucker Punch before yesterday when I picked up inFamous, but I think I'm quite sure I will be buying all of their future products from now on because I had an absolute blast with this game.inFamous is a free-roaming superhero action game, the type of which usually suck. This game is totally original though as you play as a bike messenger named Cole who drops of a package that turns out to be a bomb that destroys most of Empire City (the game's setting). Cole wakes ...

Games like this don't get any better. 0

The Sims 3 is the latest game in the best selling PC game series of all time. Since the launch of the original Sims game from Will Wright in 2000, the series has gone on to sell well over 100 million copies and brought in a whopping $4 billion for EA. After countless expansions and stuff packs for The Sims 2 a full new game is finally here, but is worth your hard earned cash? The basic formula is still exactly the same as it has been for 9 years now; you create a family of people and control them...

The best tennis game ever. 0

Surprisingly, Grand Slam Tennis is EA Sports' first foray into tennis games, but perhaps more significantly, it's the first game to make use of the new Wii Motion Plus accessory. I know a lot of people will likely buy both of these products regardless, after all, what doesn't sell better than an EA Sports game and a Wii accessory? Big question though, is the game any good and does the Motion Plus actually work? Thankfully, answer to both those questions is yes. Now, there's only one place to star...

Fans of Tetris should seriously consider it. 0

Trash Panic, a downloadable puzzler for the PS3, is a game about garbage. It's not a big surprise then that it's also completely out of its mind. Made by SCEJ, the guys behind other slightly-crazy games such as Echochrome and Patapon, have on their hands here a game that manages to seamlessly combine Tetris-styled puzzle gameplay with an environmental message. The game follows a classic Tetris mechanic, with objects falling down to be stacked into a vertical column. Things get a little different ...

A little over-priced, but still great fun. 0

The brand new island just off the Eastern coast of the old map is finally here. An early surprise is that it's only £9.99 on the PSN ($12.99 or 1000 MS Points), I was expecting at least £15. I mean look at how much they've been charging for some of the DLC cars!Thankfully the new island is fully integrated into the existing Burnout map with no loading screens, which is an impressive feat given the already considerable size. The island itself is about the size of the Downtown area, but has a mix ...

Complete and utter mayhem. 0

Imagine yourself waking up on top of an operating table in a morgue with no recollection of how you got there and the next thing you know, you possess some of the deadliest powers ever imagined. The game Prototype makes you walk, run, and super jump miles in Alex Mercer's shoes. Right off the bat, Prototype tries to make that right first impression by letting you sample a few of the many powers you get to play around with later on at the very start of the game. In this introduction, I noticed, c...

The best DLC so far and an absolute must buy. 0

Fallout 3's downloadable content endeavours have been churned out on a pretty regular basis throughout this year, with Bethesda seemingly gaining momentum on each successive release. Operation Anchorage set your wastelandian denizen in a brand-new snowy environment filled with different enemies and weapons, but its sole emphasis on combat left many feeling unfulfilled. The Fallout series has always been less about shooting fools than convincing fools to shoot themselves in my book, so Op. Anchor...

Stomps the movie into the dirt. 0

Let me start by saying that I'm not a huge Transformers fan, the first game sucked and in my opinion (well, and that of 99% of people that have seen it actually) Michael Bay's latest Transformers movie is one of the worst blockbusters in a long, long time. Despite all this going against the new game, I rather strangely decided to give the game a rental over the weekend and guess what? I bought it today.Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen the game shares pretty much all the strengths and weakness...

Strictly for existing fans only. 1

Now I’ve never been a table top gamer myself but I’m aware of its existence. Sure I may laugh as I pass by the games workshop store in the mall but I can’t help but wonder what those quirky lads are doing in there so with the new PC, and therefore more acceptable to me and my digital nerd kind, release of the Games Workshop classic Blood Bowl I was able to catch a glimpse into the high stakes adrenaline fueled world of dice rolls. Now I can’t give any insight into how well developers Cyanide capt...

Red Faction Guerilla has tons to offer and it's all great. 0

I should preface this review by saying that I don't have a whole lot of experience with open world action games, or open world games of any sort, really. However, as I've gotten older, I've learned to overcome my age old gaming habits and try out a few genres I may have shied away from at a young age.Red Faction Guerrilla for the Xbox 360 is an third-person open-world action game developed by Volition, Inc. and published by THQ. You'll assume the role of freelance miner Alec Mason, a newcomer to...

As a fan of the first game, this is a disappointment. 0

Now I was a very big fan of the first Overlord game. It was a somewhat fresh idea with an interesting storyline and an excellent script. So the other day after being awake for around 30 hours which involved a 3,000 mile plane ride full of crying babies I shuffled into Gamestop with as much excitement as I could muster in my zombie state and picked up Overlord 2. I had fond memories of the first game for being a lengthy and engaging game full of challenges and careful minion positioning before fi...

A beautiful and inventive take on a classic genre. 0

Developer Frozenbyte has forayed into two-dimensional territory with their new platformer, Trine. For its high price point, this choice of style may initially be an eyebrow-raiser, but Trine’s deeply striking visuals and meticulous, breathing atmosphere are terrifically complimented by its fresh physics-based game play. Perhaps Trine shows that the 2-D model for a game isn’t obsolete after all; but for whatever that’s worth, Trine is an inventive take on a sword-and-sorcery premise that vortexes...

At just 800 Microsoft Points, this game is an absolute steal. 0

Worms is one of the longest running video game series in existence. Team 17 first debuted its much loved hit way back in 1995 on the PC. Since then it has seen plenty of expansion packs, direct sequels and it even had a few forays into the 3D realm. It's appeared on countless consoles from the Amiga to the PSP and now it's turned up on the Xbox 360 for a second time; with the Live Arcade release of Worms 2: Armageddon. This is basically the direct sequel to Live Arcade's Worms from 2007, one of t...
