2011 Game Of The Year

My top ten of 2011. Honorary mentions are just that, mentions.

List items

  • Number 1! Skyrim. I have been a fan of Bethesda since Oblivion and Skyrim knocks everything else they have made out of the ring. It is a MASSIVE world but full of little details which make it all seem real, Skyrim draws me in to a point where I often spend hours playing it without even realising it. While I realise PS3 players have been screwed over I personally am playing on PC and its great, no bugs so far and it looks great. All I have to say is roll on Fallout 4.

  • Number 2! How do I adequately put how awesome SR3 is? How about I loved it so much I finished it all on PS3 then instantly bought the PC version? How about that you start the game by robbing a bank dressed as a member of your own gang? How about that by the time I had finished with it on PS3 I was basically invincible? SR3 is FUCKING amazing. Buy it. NOW.

  • Number 3! Bastion. No doubt anyone reading this has heard of this game at the very least. It is the single best downloadable game I've ever played and honestly would probably make a list of my top ten of all time. Everything is so well made its astonishing that only 7 people made this beautiful game. The artwork is gorgeous, the music is wonderful and the plot is clever and deep. If you haven't yet played it then buy it now, if you cant afford it go play the chrome version because EVERYONE needs to play this game.

  • Number 4! It is testament to the quality of releases this year that a game as perfect as Portal 2 is only number 4 on my list. Portal 2 is perfect in almost every way. The writing is funny yet clever, the puzzles are hard but not unfair and the co-op works great. So what is it that keeps it from higher in the list? Well I personally haven't found much re-playability in it, this is honestly the only bad thing I can think of though.

  • Number 5! Dead Space 2 is a game I really really enjoyed, unfortuently its early release means it will probably be overlooked on most lists which is a pity since it was a pitch perfect horror action game. Some may be disappointed in its more action orientated approach but I personally found it exhilarating and it definitely still had some scary disturbing moments. A quick word has to be said about the look of the game to, its gorgeous from both a art and tech point of view.

  • Number 6! Deus ex was very much a outsider at the beginning of the year but amazingly the team at Ubisoft managed to go toe to toe with the original game and in my mind even better it in some ways. The atmosphere was dark and ominous, the gameplay was fast and smooth and the plot was genuinely interesting and thought provoking. I look forward to what's next.

  • Number 7! After finally finishing UC2 around a month before UC3 came out I thought there was no way it could top how good the second game was, boy was I wrong. UC3 plays like the most interactive action movie ever made and the set pieces are both beautiful and wondrous. The best bits were the quiet moments though, Naughty Dog managed to make me care and worry for these ridiculous action hero characters in a way I never imagined they could. Bravo and I eagerly await The Last of Us.

  • Number 8! Gears of War was never one of my favourite franchises but after playing the beta early in the year I was hyped for more, when it finally arrived I was surprised. In the month or so I spent playing GOW3 I found myself enjoying the campaign and Horde more than the competitive MP by far. The emotional moments in the campaign were actually hard hitting and Horde is almost perfect.

  • Number 9! Dissidia 012 is a GREAT psp game, which is hard to come by nowadays. The fighting is intricate and fun, full of little parts which make for one deep great game. Plus when you finish the story mode you unlock the entire first game, THE ENTIRE OF IT.

  • Number 10! Trackmania 2 has started to slowly consume my life this year, it controls great, has great community features and hell, who doesn't like some dub-step?

  • Honorary mention to this small game which is actually great fun.

  • Honorary mention to this ridiculously addictive mobile spawn of teh devil.

  • Last honorary mention to this super addictive great game on iOs.
