@cannonballbam:

You definitely should. It'd be considered quite janky to anyone approaching it for the first time in 2016 but man, is there some real love put into the universe here. One of the best crafted sci-fi universes of any medium. It's worth putting up with some combat related headaches and generic side content just to see it all.

I read somewhere the Fury X will only come in its ref form due to its unique cooling situation. Although I suppose air cooled non-ref versions could be released but that sort of defeats the purpose, i guess.

Really good writeup. I played through Origins on release but wasn't so floored by it that I felt like I needed to pick up 2 by default. Then they released a demo for 2 shortly before its release and that failed to butter me up at all either. I've been contemplating going back to it recently but I think your argument has further assured me that I'm not really missing out on much.

Funnily enough though, I beat Inquisition back in November and the Dragon Age Keep thing that lets you import a particular world state made the general plot points of Dragon Age 2 sound so interesting. Sad to hear those are implemented poorly.

@tennmuerti: I agree with you completely. It's a difficult feeling to pin down because, at one point in my life as a frequent player of games, I thought that any RPG that could deliver on the promise of true freedom automatically made it the ultimate of its kind. Around the times of Oblivion I wasn't really bothered by the fact that you weren't actually playing any role other than "Ultimate Jack of All Trades Guy". The role of someone who can do just about everything offered regardless of whether or not it made sense for the character. "Who let the leader of the Assassin's guild into the Thieve's guild even though a major tenet of the Thieve's guild is not killing?" By the time Skyrim was released, though, it started to bother me. Like, so much so that I couldn't even really enjoy the game on release.

I think it shed some light on exactly why Skyrim's world and story feel so dry and meaningless to me. There's plenty of interesting lore and decent enough writing to make it all interesting but your character just lacks a sense of place in it. Like you exist in a vacuum away from the rest of the world.

But, just like you said, once I finally came to grips with exactly what Skyrim, and much of The Elder Scrolls series in general, is trying to accomplish as an RPG, I was able to enjoy Skyrim much more.

I upgraded from a 760 to a 970 about a month ago to prepare for Witcher 3. I picked up the Asus STRIX 970 on sale for $340 at MicroCenter and got Witcher 3 for free, funnily enough.

Looked up some guides about what to expect when overclocking and cranked that 970 up pretty decently above its factory OC with MSI Afterburner. With a slightly overclocked Sandy Bridge i5 and 8gigs of RAM I run the Witcher 3 on Max at 1080p with Hairworks off, Shadows lowered to High, and Foliage Density 1 notch below max (either High or Med, can't remember what the highest is). Game runs wonderfully. Constantly between 55 and 60 frames with VSYNC on.

Super impressed with the OC capability of the 970 and will likely pick up a second for SLI sometime next year if prices lower enough.

It's kind of sad that I have trouble narrowing down my biggest disappointment because there were just so many needlessly fucked up games this year. Unity is probably the biggest for me. That game is just a shallow, busted attempt at a return to what made the series great while still failing to fix any of the big issues that have plagued these games for years. But the worst part is that I'm about halfway through and pride won't let me stop.

Funniest apology is probably Driveclub. Still no PS Plus edition and the game that people paid for is just now sort of working... I can't imagine a poorer showing from what was supposed to be a Sony exclusive holdover until the next Gran Turismo. All I can do is shake my head and laugh.

Wow, great work. It really shows that I've forgotten about a pretty large number of classic Halo 1 and 2 maps.

Metro 2033 and Last Light are both quite solid if you can deal with some design quirks and slow pacing.

If you enjoyed Dark Souls 1 then it is quite easy to recommend Dark Souls 2. If you didn't enjoy Dark Souls 1 due to difficulty or seemingly impenetrable mechanics then it is even easier to recommend Dark Souls 2 because it is both easier and simpler but retains the stellar atmosphere, gameplay formula, and addictiveness of the first.

Bioshock and Bioshock 2 are both vastly better than Bioshock Infinite, in my opinion, so if you liked Infinite then they are must plays.

Grand Theft Auto 5 and Red Dead Redemption are some of the finest open world games ever made.

The Mass Effect series is one of my personal favorites.

Spec Ops: The Line is a quite serviceable and mostly enjoyable little shooter than transcends mediocrity thanks to a well delivered and fascinating story.

Horror games have never really been my forte so I always find it incredibly interesting to read other people's analyses about them. I applaud your thorough knowledge of the genre.

I was quite young when clocktower was released so I never played it in its prime but after reading your thoughts on it, as well as seeing it mentioned a lot on the internet as of late, I think I may have to give it a try since it seems to hold up. I may have to pick up Alien: Isolation as well considering all of the positivity I've seen about it recently.

I have to disagree with you about the Suffering, though. I remember the gameplay being quite satisfying due to its responsiveness. Almost like a third person Painkiller or something.

Thanks for the good read
