This is catastrophic!! I just finished CoP a week ago and I can't get enough! CRAP! I got SoC when it came out (you know, on disc) and didn't like it so shelved it until about 3 weeks ago when I installed it with a fan mod and COULD. NOT. STOP. PLAYING. I was so excited to find out that there was a second one in the works, and less than a week later -- this! What the hell is going RIGHT these days?

So. I like Chrono Trigger a lot (it's by no means my favorite, though). I just think there isn't much "Endurance" to be had. When it comes to the SNES era RPGs it's extremely short. In college my friends and I played it Iron Man style: one sitting, no saving, no stopping. It took less than 10 hours WITH the ridiculous PSX load times. I agree that not every ER needs to be a true marathon, but this about as short as they come. I really think that the people who are saying Earthbound are on to something. That game was an SNES era game that was longer than CT and much stranger. I mean, compare:

P4: Cult hit, not particularly well-known. Long as hell. Crazy story with lots of unique characters. Mr. Morooka + GB crew = hilarious hijinks.

Deadly Premonition: WTF through and through. Terrible gameplay and incomprehensible story + GB crew = hilarious hijinks.

CT: Widely well known. Considered by many to be the best SNES game. Short (can beat it with all side quests in <8 hours). Evidently one of the crew has played it before, so no WTF possible. Very good game + GB crew = an extended retro quick look.

Don't get me wrong: I like the game, and will watch it. Just was kinda hoping for something quirkier. Plus: why all the Patrick hate? He's awesome!

+1. Co-op story mode is the best thing ever.

Lemme try a few:

  1. RPGs with grinding can be relaxing (and fun!). Further, there is nothing wrong with a well-made RPG where everyone stands in a line and takes turns whacking each other.
  2. Front Mission 3 is the best strategy game, period.
  3. Lost Odyssey is the best game available for the Xbox 360.
  4. Mirror's Edge was an amazing game that was way more visceral than every other game that mentions the word "visceral" in its advertising (We're talking feelings, not actual viscera).
  5. Just because it's a message board, doesn't mean you can't at least try to capitalize and use punctuation.

I feel better now! What a cathartic thread.

@frythefly: Ha! I still use the "I speeel my DREEEENK" sound clip for my text message ring tone.

In all seriousness, I missed that lady but some of the gang stereotypes caught me off guard. I don't know if I'd consider it offensive, but it's certainly borderline. I guess it'd be more racist if everything in the game weren't like that.

The whole game setting just feels... weird. I live near Detroit and spend a fair amount of time in the city, and the city they made doesn't seem like what future Detroit would look like to me. It feels like future New York that everyone calls Detroit.

I had to do SOMETHING (my wife: "Other than rant at me!")

So I decided to fix two problems at once. I really enjoyed all these games, and I hope that even people who didn't get free ones will at least try the demos. And hey, if you want a discount, maybe it'll be on a Steam sale again!

That's it! All the games are spoken for. Thanks to everyone for helping me relieve some of my anger in a productive way. Remember, if you like it, pay it forward!

Before I begin, let me preface this by saying that if this violates any forum rules, please let me know and I'll totally stop!

Right, so to prevent a wall of text, here's the short version. I'm mad as hell that I got suckered into buying From Dust for the PC.

I was too excited to remember that this is Ubisoft on the PC we're talking. God forbid I should be excited about a video game once in a while. So I bought it without doing the extensive research that I guess is now necessary to find out if you need to give your first born as well as your $15 to play. Well, Steam won't give me my money back (disappointing, but not really their fault) and I'm physically sick that any of my money is going to support Ubisoft's deplorable behavior. Melodramatic? Probably, but I can't help feeling violated. I feel dirty for supporting the worst in the industry. I want to balance the karmic scales by supporting the best parts instead.
Over the last year or so, through various Humble Bundles and Steam sales, I've found that nearly ALL of my favorite games have been indie games. While I never paid less than $20 for a humble bundle, I never gave enough to equal the full retail value. In these sales, I've found gems that I feel are actually worth more than the amount that they charge. If I had known how good these games were, I would have gladly paid the full price, and I regret that didn't. So here I make a stand. I'm willing to put my money where my mouth is, too.

So here we go. In various sales, I paid less than retail for the following games that, had I known how much I would love them, I would have gladly paid twice the full cost. So now I will, and in the process, maybe spread some joy for a change. The games are:

Aquaria (Didn't even get Humble Bundle for it, then realized it was the best of the bunch by far)

Recettear: an Item Shop's Tale(50% Steam Sale) -- There's a demo, too if you're curious.

Gratuitous Space Battles (75% Steam Sale) -- Demo here, too. Taken as well.

Terraria (50% off Steam Sale) Popular game, that Terraria. Both have been spoken for.

I will buy 2 copies of each game (Except for GSB, since I'll be getting the complete bundle @$40). First people to PM me asking for ONE(1) of these games with their Steam name, and I'll gift them a copy, until all nine are spoken for. I'll post when they're gone, so check first. Make no mistake: this is my personal "Fuck You" to Ubisoft, but it's also a message I want to send to the developers of these games that I think what they're doing is badass, and they deserve the full amount of money for their work.

Anyone who does get a copy, if you like the game, maybe consider paying it forward and gifting a copy to someone else. Let's drown out shitty PC ports with bait-and-switch DRM by playing some of the best PC games around. This is my catharsis, but maybe some of you can come along for the ride.

I'm so fucking mad I'm having trouble seeing straight. I SHOULD HAVE KNOWN. I'M A TOTAL IDIOT. This is Ubisoft, we're talking. On the PC.

I bought it on the PC without checking to SEE IF I NEEDED A TOTALLY SEPERATE ACCOUNT on a GODDAMN service. The game looked awesome, the quick look made me want to play it, but I thought better wait, it should be better with a mouse. LET ME PAY YOU FOR YOUR FUCKING GAME, THEN LET ME PLAY IT. Same to EA. I don't want an Origin account. I don't want a UPlay account. I WANT TO PLAY FUCKING VIDEO GAMES.

If I can get my money back from anyone, I will. And I'm done. I don't want to have to research a game before it comes out to find out if they need to know my goddamn blood type to let me play.

FTFY Ubisoft.

Okay, now I feel better. I don't normally rant that hard on forums.

After failing to notice the PSP for so long, I'm ready to be convinced on the Vita. The PSP might have rampant piracy, but it's also the ONLY place to get niche localized Japanese titles that just aren't feasible on any other platform. I hope that the Vita can continue that, with a healthy dose of Western goodness as well. If they can convince me that's what's in the cards, I'll pre-order the damn thing.

It's just a pissing contest, and I have news for EA: You're too late. I'm invested in the Steam platform, and I don't see the need to have yet another damn store to buy crap from. I'm not installing a publisher exclusive store for every publisher that wants to have their own spyware on my machine. Steam is bad enough. Just do what it takes and get your stuff on Steam so I can buy it. Is that so hard?

And if these shenanigans mean that I eventually wont be able to redownload DA2 from Steam, then to hell with you both.
