Best of 2012

Here we go again! My top 10 of 2012!

List items

  • It's not easy to revive a 20-year-old franchise. Hell, when they originally announced a revival of XCOM it made Spoony shout "Betrayal!" throughout the halls of E3. This was my favorite game to come out this year. A brilliant cover-based strategy RPG that keeps you at the edge of your seat to keep your whole squad alive. This earned a #1 on my list.

  • One of the best, and most accessible, fighting games in recent history. Everything good about Guilty Gear and BlazBlue but simplified for casual gameers with complexity for the hardcore crowd. Gameplay aside, one of the best stories presented in the single player mode and a great set-up for Persona 5 whenever that may be.

  • The perfect game for fans of the comic and TV show. This adventure game brings out all of the suspense and drama you could crave in an episodic format. This game proves that episodic releases can be a real big thing in the future (and they beat Valve to the punch after the Half Life 2 episodic release train wreck.)

  • The prefect JRPG for the current console generation. Take the open environment, quest system, and interface of an MMO and fuse it with the story, characters, length, and interface of a JRPG and you have a masterpiece. Thanks to Operation Rainfall for making Nintendo finally release this in the states.

  • Take stealth, mix it with BioShock, and you have a great first person action game. The art style and world is amazing in the game, play if if you haven't already.

  • I can safely say this is the 2nd best Pokemon game of all time next to Gold/Silver. Take all the Pokemon we grew to love and throw them in this new world with a gripping story set 2 years after Black/White.

  • Getting frustrated never felt so good in this indie-released space combat game. Though they are very different, the reason XCOM's combat was so intense is the same here: permanent death. Even more so in this game you can easily lose a crew member if you made the wrong decision. This game has alot of depth and it will keep you playing after multiple restarts when you die. Yes, you WILL die.

  • One of the most disappointing games this year was still one of the best. This is really a personal favorite. Aside from everything that sucked, I enjoyed the story of Connor and the conflict with the army, his tribe, and his own father. It still felt very much like Assassin's Creed and that was a good thing, and the naval combat grew on me.

  • The Nintendo Wii's swansong had to make this list. Another JRPG brought here by fan response from Operation Rainfall. The combat in this is great in the same ways Xenoblade's was but at the same time different when you had to engage enemies with your crossbow. This is also very long but what JRPG isn't?

  • Everything I loved about Tekken is back, but now with some Snoop Dogg (er... Lion.) A huge roster, smooth controls. Everything that made me love Tekken Tag is back and improved.
