First job interview today, Any tips?

Yeah so, I just got a call back after about almost two weeks and I didn't think I was gonna get a interview until today when they called me while I was in the shower.

To be clear the interview is for a supermarket, I was just wondering if the giantbomb community has any tips for my  first job interview.
I'm not gonna lie I am pretty nervous right now.

Edit: I got the job. Awesome now I'm saving my money for my car insurance and preordering  Halo Reach

be confident and big yourself up. also tell them that you have really good people skills. a lot of jobs these days dont go on qualification but on experience and personality, so if you can prove to them that you can get on well with people and can be a team player then it will give you a good chance of getting the job

If it's a supermarket job as a bagger (which was my first job), don't even worry about it.

For low end jobs (the kinds teenagers typically do), managers just want people who get along with coworkers and show up. Flakiness and laziness were the two things they hated at my place.

Know your strengths and weaknesses. This is very important as it gives them more info on you and it shows that you know yourself as a person. When telling them your weaknesses, try and turn them around into strengths. An example would be "I pay too much attention to detail" but you can turn this around to a strength such as "however, it does help when making corrections as it can in the end save time". Something along those lines.

Have questions of your own, relevant questions. It shows that you are interested in it and you're making the effort to know what you are getting into and that you're doing your best to prepare yourself.

Smile and just be open. But don't smile too much as to creep them out. Sit straight and have a nice composure. Don't cross your arms or anything like that as it can seem as though you're trying to block yourself off. When talking to them, look at them directly in the eyes when possible. Of course, when thinking of a response or remembering back to something, you'll veer off, look in another direction or something like that, but that's perfectly normal, so don't worry too much about that. When they're talking to you, again, keep eye contact. Every now and then nod or make some affirmative sound like "I see" or "hmm-mm" (don't know how to put that last one in words, but just make a sound to show you understand).

When meeting new people, such as when they introduce you to the different employees, managers and whatevers, shake their hand firmly, smile and introduce yourself by saying your name.

Last but not least, dress well. Not too sure how well to dress for a supermarket job, cause I think a suit might be a bit too much. Maybe a nice buttoned shirt, tucked into some slacks or black pants? Not sure.

Good luck!

I'll second the dress nice thing.  I showed up to my first interview in jeans and the guy who was interviewing me told me I should never show up to any kind of job interview in jeans.  He sent me home and make me come back a couple of days later to try again.  I agree that a suit would be too much, just wear nice stuff, be confident (or at least act like it), and don't worry.  Jobs like that are all about just showing that you will be reliable.  Good luck.

Have your bio down. No hesitations or awkward asides. Always have follow up questions prepared, because at the end they'll ask if you have any questions and you don't want to end the interview with a "nope..."

Also don't be humble. I've interviewed a few people for jobs and we never go with the guy too modest to talk about their own skills or abilities. You are there to sell yourself.

@TheDoorman: I have always felt that staying calm can get you very very far in a interview.  I went to college for Graphic Design, I remember getting my 1st interview and being very nervous to the point It was obvious I was nervous at the interview.  I know this because the guy actually saw it and said stay calm i'm not going to eat you.

Now the problem with this answer is that its hard to solve this problem, and in truth I think the only way to solve this problem is with a few interviews under your belt.  That was about 7 years ago for me, now I go to interviews a lot more calm and I have no problem being ask questions.  So in the end just try to stay calm as you possibly can, keep a good head on your shoulders and try to answer questions as best as you can.

i don't know if anyone has said this yet, but don't ask to be paid X amount. Just ask what people in your position get paid. If not you will either end up getting paid less than you should or they'll reject you cause you asked for to much.

Make sure you wear pants. The lady in my last interview I went to didn't look to pleased when I showed up naked form the waist down.

Seriously though, just dress in plain clothes. You don't need to wear a suit and tie, but just wear a simple shirt with no real flashy logo's or designs on it and simple pants. If you have facial jewelry take it off. If you have some wacky hair do comb it down to something normal. It's all about your first impression and like it or not seeing people with those things makes most people think you are a punk or someone who can't be reliable. Once you get the job though then you can start putting it back on after working there for a few weeks or a month. Unless the boss says something you should be fine.

Also, don't wear any strong colognes or deodorants. A lot of people are allergic to those things and the person doing the interview may be one of them. Not a good way to start off an interview by sending them to the hospital because they have an allergic reaction.

Pfft, these are all amateur hints. If you really want the job, bring two things: a nice gift, and a sword. Don't let them see either one (not sure how you'll hide the sword), it has to be a surprise. Present the gift, and if you don't get the job then, cut off your arm and shove the sword in there. At that point, they HAVE to hire you. Think about it: what would you do if somebody was not only launching blood at you, but also had a sword for an arm? If your answer isn't, "Promote them", you're probably dead. That's what Blood Combat Soldiers do.

Be yourself. The interview is as much about whether the job is right for you as if you're right for the job. Dress appropriately, and relax. You'll be out of there within 20 minutes no doubt. Oh and, most importantly be prepared for dumb questions!

Don't dress professionally but don't dress to casually either. Dont wear flip flops, du rags, hats, etc. Also look the manager in the eye when you talk, it shows confidence.

Would not advise shorts.  My standard job interview attire is a button-up shirt tucked into slacks and dress shoes.  I wore this to several retail position interviews, theme park, and a fast food restaurant (and usually got hired).  It's more important that you are pleasant and professional, you look the manager in the eye, and that you sit up straight.  This last part is extremely important and easy to forget.

Don't talk yourself up too much but don't gloss over your abilities.  Practice what you are going to say.  Usually, they will ask about certain situations in which you had a leadership position or had to deal with a difficult person, and usually it is fine if you give an example from everyday life if you have no work experience.  Make sure that you relax as well, they won't want to hire someone that appears uptight.

a neat trick I learned from a big finance guy that hires many people from Sunlife insurance is to "mirror" the person interviewing. If they cross their legs, cross your legs. If they lean back, lean back. If they speak quietly, speak quietly. Mirroring them gives a sense of familiarity and helps them like you a lot quicker. :) also be confident. clearly they like you enough to interview you. Be yourself and be confident in your ability to do the job :) Best of luck duder.

When they ask "why should we hire you over other people" don't reply with "Well, at my last job while layoffs were happening they kept me to the very end, because I was good at my job". Because there's a chance the guy interviewing you was one of the people who got laid off early from the last job. A very, very big chance.

Funny how this topic comes up while I'm scrounging around for scraps to stick into my first resume. EvangelBlue pretty much nails everything on the head, according to all of the "How to do well at a job interview" articles I've read.    I've also read that it's best to wait until the interviewer offers you a seat before sitting down. In any case, good luck.  Strike a balance between honesty and positivity and you should be good. :)

What is the best way to obtain an interview for these types of jobs (retail, grocery...)?  Should you call them?  Initially attempt to meet the manager in person?  Email?  Just curious.

@FluxWaveZ: It's best to speak with the manager, so that you leave an impression.  After you fill an application, call the manager after a week or so.  If you don't do things like that to stand out, you will get lost in the shuffle of the tens/hundreds of people applying for a job there.

^^^this. dress nicely. doesn't have to be a jacket and tie but do wear some nice pants and a button up shirt.

anticipate questions like:

"why should we hire you"
"what are your strengths"
"why do you want to work here"

sell yourself. bullshit if you have to, just make it sound good.

also just keep yourself calm and relaxed.

let em know you're a hard worker and you are dependable.
good at problem-solving, etc. etc.

also make sure when it's over to thank them for their time, shake their hands(s) and
let em know you would really like the opportunity and that you look forward to hearing from them.

has worked for me so far.

hope I wasn't too late with the response, and good luck bud.

Lie like a motherfucker.

Example
Interviewer: "where do you see yourself in 5 years"
You: "A proud General Manager of [insert store name here]"

Wear nice clothing, Shirt with a collar, nice pants (not jeans), no need to do your hair as long as it isn't too crazy, shave/trim facial hair (if you have a beard, use a beard trimmer), wear nice sneakers or, if your ballsy enough, dress shoes.

Show up 10 minutes early and wait if he/she isnt ready for you.

And overall, pretend like your the hardest worker on the face of the planet and don't be afraid to tell the interviewer that. Also, if you have really bad nerves like my sister does, do something to calm you down before the interview. While i dont really recommend it, specially if your driving, I heard that taking a shot of liquor or drinking a beer before going in helps calm you down a lot. Just a single shot or beer, no more. and remember to take a breath mint.

This might sound like common sense, but make sure you eat before you go in. I went to a job interview at 8 am without eating, and I was so groggy and hungry I think it affected my responses. I still got the job, but the interview could have went better.

@FluxWaveZ: call them and ask to speak to someone responsible for interviewing potential job candidates. They will either put you on the phone with someone or blow you off. If the call doesn't work go in person. I am responsible for hiring people at my job, and I always interview people who call. It shows that they want to work.
