I just played Pyre for the first time this year and had a good time! I agree that the game's priorities can feel muddy (and boy that opening can feel slow), but I also loves its experimental feel--interesting highs and dull lows, but all around a cool game.

Hades is definitely a more "normal" game and has seen more success because of it, but I'm confident Supergiant isn't the kind of dev to sellout their creativity.

Pyre only gets better the farther you get in, and I think you've made it past the sloggiest of it. And as a warning: the pacing gets faster the farther you get in, so yeah, game might not be as long as you think. Good luck!

For manic energy, I guess Fire Escape? Only heard the first ep.

As a general game podcast later in the week, gotta rep Minnmax. Ex-Game Informer folks that are a lot of fun, real positive and a great community.

Also: you mentioned might not being able to keep up with fast management--neither can I, but every Total War game has a time manipulation button by the minimap. I almost always play in slomo cause I can't keep up, might wanna give that a shot!

Weirdest part of Bowser's Fury to me is that it probbbably won't net them many more sales. Wii U ports do gangbusters, and this is a major Mario title most people haven't played--they could've sold Bowser's Fury separate and made a ton more cash (though that wouldn't be a very Nintendo-like solution).

@mmmslash: If you were unaware, Disco Elysium was made in part to fulfill the Warren Spector city-block concept. It's a small map with a ludicrous amount of detail and permutations as the days go by. I'm pretty certain the devs talked about that Spector pitch a while ago.

Made the mistake of listening to Congress' speeches after all this; some guy from Nebraska said (not exact quotes) "I've always been kind of a history nerd"--mentally pats himself on the back--and sagely reminds us "this is what happens when both sides resort to such violent rhetoric." Some good "This isn't America" and vague implications that American Ideals™ are too great to be subverted by the bad men.

Feels like being told that everything will be okay as long as you shut your mouth and close your eyes. It's disgusting.

I enjoyed Dying Light's melee--especially that big, dumb drop kick--to extend other people mentioning Dead Island.

@doctordonkey: I played Control on base PS4 recently; the performance drops were bad, but not enough to significantly mar my impressions of the game overall. I think patches probably helped with that though, coming in a while after release.

Also: that game was indoors, with lots of harsh geometry and weird visual effects--almost better at hiding visual fidelity losses. Cyberpunk with empty sidewalks and streets, awful texture pop-in, and bad framerates makes all those failings stand out like a sore thumb.

Just a heads up, Eurogamer doesn't number their reviews anymore: that's Eurogamer Italy. They said they wanna play it more and see how many bugs the day 1 patch fixes before assigning judgement.

Reviews are unsurprising--mostly high, few outliers, lots of reviews spending a lot words reckoning with the game's tone and cultural wake and how it does or doesn't mesh with them. I'm honestly more curious what the "three months later" take on this game is.

I might try to juggle continuing Wasteland 3 and starting Dragon Quest 11--I'm curious, never played the series before.

I kinda enjoy how batshit crazy Final Fantasy gets, though, so I'm not certain how FF's normal, well-adjusted brother will vibe with me.
