Never been a part of or seen the gamespot community - doesn't sound like a great place anyway.
But so far the Giant Bomb community is shaping up to be quite reasonable, people are getting along well.

I think the stars are good, numerical values are too definite - the stars make it harder to make a decision about a game solely based on a "score", which is a good thing.

I haven't seen any effects of positive/negative ratings yet, although i think the ratings are a per-post system.. Though I have been wrong before.

Edit: Ok, I have seen the results of a negative rating - it hides that post.
