Nick's Top 10 of 2011

I really have no idea why I did this. Here's my Top 10 video games of 2011.

UPDATE 1/1/12: Honorable mention: Deus Ex: Human Revolution. I wish I played this before the end of the new year. Just grabbed it and I'm hooked!

List items

  • This game is so fucking crazy. This game is so fucking awesome. This game is so fucking ridiculous. You should really play Saints Row: The Third. ...You really should. ...Play this game. Now.

  • I grew up with the Mortal Kombat games growing up. Sure, by then they had all been ported to the SNES, but that made it so much more exciting. Being able to do all of this (fatalities, one of them including blowing up the god damn world) in your own home. Now, you can own all three arcade-accurate versions of MK, MKII, and UMK3 all as one downloadable item. Nothing can shake this classic group of games. Also, sorry Brad, but Jeff wins this battle. UMK3 is a much better game than MKII.

  • Holy f--king s--t. F--king... --this is a f--king great new iteration on a classic game. THE irreverent trivia party game returned in 2011, and it came back bigger and better than ever. The current episodic formula works. The on-disc and downloadable content are so big on current events that it's scary! I am really hoping Jellyvision is working on a You Don't Know Jack 2, and please don't lose that Cookie! We love you!

  • Exported everything from the first game. Have an incredible amount of DLC, as well. This game improves upon everything that made the first Dance Central so great. Voice commands, multiple sort options, choosing what you want to practice, and two players being able to play side-by-side simultaneously! Still haven't purchased all the DLC, but if I had the money right now, I would. Don't stop what you do best, Harmonix! Psst... king of pop....

  • After MK vs. DC Universe, the guys at Netherrealm Studios (formerly Midway), took the franchise back to its roots, keeping the 3D models of the present, all the while FINALLY returning to a two-dimensional fighting plane. This is the game for Mortal Kombat fans. I was so happy when this game finally came out. On the whole, it does not disappoint. Unfortunately, the DLC situation broke the online play (what with not being able to play as characters YOU paid for if your opponent didn't download a separate OPTIONAL free compatibility pack), and there were only four new character releases, but they're all fantastic. There's so much content to check out on-disc alone, that it really makes it worth the purchase (300 challenges!). Also, fatalities. Holy shit, fatalities.

  • Prepare to die. A lot. Souls are everything. Dying leaves a "bloodstain" with all your souls you've collected up to that point. You can only have one stain. Get back to that stain, or lose those souls forever. I've actually played Demon's Souls. I loved the hell out of it. I loved the hell out of Dark Souls as well. These games make handling boss battles so amazing. While so many frustrations arise, being able to finally overcome any obstacle in your path is so god damn gratifying, that it makes you want to play through the game even more. The incredibly amazing feeling of success these games provide can't be rivaled in any other franchise. After being kicked in the nuts repeatedly at any specific point in the game, finally being able to get past it, and especially when seeing an unlit bonfire in view... god... no other game can pull that off. I love Dark Souls.

  • More of the same, but I really miss diving to prone. Hearing a crazy sound for leveling up everything so often just feels... wrong, yet it's perfect. Sorry, but Battlefield just isn't my bag. I hate vehicles in multiplayer, unless it's a racing game. One of the reasons why I don't care for the Halo franchise that much either. Can't wait for Counter-Strike: GO!

  • How do you improve on such an interesting game that was Portal? ...Continue the story, introduce new characters, new gameplay elements, new environments, and even more complex puzzles all while making the game effectively more than two times as long as its predecessor. I really can't say anything bad about this one. Valve worked their butt off making a great expanded story for the franchise. Will there be a Portal 3? Maybe, maybe not. I'm hoping to see it some day, though.

  • It's the late 1940s. Los Angeles. Just got out of the war, and now working as a cop, Cole Phelps makes his way through the ranks by being the best damn detective he can be. Interrogation time: Is the suspect telling the truth, or lying? Take care to note any facial inconsistencies, as they'll shine through. Seriously, the facial capture for this game is like nothing else. Well done.

  • I'll admit it. I never finished this game (WTF?! I KNOW!). However, what I have played was so amazing. While I found the combat to be effective at best, this game really comes to fruition in the audio design. It's amazing how the land appears while you come across it, however having an entire narration on everything you do makes the game really enjoyable. It never feels out of place, either.
