Does your wife (or significant other) mess w/ you while you game?

Hey Guys,

So, Im a married man of 11 years, and you'd think after all these years she'd figure out to now mess with me when Im gaming.. lol. Nope. Case and point, yesterday.

During a casual Sunday afternoon, I figured i'd squeeze in a couple of fights of Street Fighter , before firing up a movie and my wife finished eating lunch. Now I typically wouldnt do this, because I usually like to game:

  • Uninterrupted
  • At night after everyone goes to bed
  • without my kids around as I dont like playing violent games around my kids (stuff like gears or COD)

In anycase, Here I am like round 3 of 5 / fighting random ranked matches in street fighter (I enjoy this because its easy in and easy out). Suddenly she decides to jokingly walk across the room and totally COCK BLOCK the TV, impairing my ability to kick ass, and basically giving a free pass to my opponent. As if that wasn't enough, she then decides to unplug my fightpad again, mid match.

Now, Im a pretty patient guy, but when it comes to gaming, I tend to get really pissed if Im not provided with a semi-fair opportunity to WIN. Like, I absolutely HATE when someone is trying to have a conversation with me while Im playing any type of game that requires precision.. (such as: well timed key inputs in SF.)

This pretty much just reinforces the fact that I should really just stick to gaming during the evening hours, and not have to deal with this frustration.. lol.

Perhaps Its stupid for me to have this mind set, but as a guy who uses gaming as a means to get away from "real life, and responsibility" (as do alot of other peeps), its important for me to NOT brought back into real life while Im having my game sessions.

Obviously, I know she was joking, and I just turned it off in frustration, and handled it like a MAN.. lol. I love my wife to death, and i know shes totally just trolling me intentionally.  In anycase, I figured i'd blog this simply because I know I cant be the only dude who's lived this experience in one form or another.

Thanks for reading duders.

Yeah, my wife does one of the following:

1. Tell me how much I suck at the game. Which can be super annoying if I'm either playing online and losing or repeating a certain section of a game that I just can't get past.

2. Give me the "talking" punishment, where she doesn't shut the hell up. This creates a weird purgatory where I can't concentrate on the game or on her.

3. Leave the room.

I prefer #3.

Do you get all up in her bid'ness when she's cleaning or making you a sandwich?

Joking aside, you should probably get a divorce.

Nope, my wife games as much as I do, so the most I will ever hear is "When do I get to play" and she is usually joking about that.

Walking in front of the TV or saying you suck is fine, I find it funny, but unplugging the controller is just rude in my opinion. I'll walk in front of the TV when people are watching it for a second to annoy them sometimes but I wouldn't unplug it.

Nope, not at all. But then again, I rarely feel the need for gaming in her presence. But if I were your wife, judging from the way you describe your mindset when playing, I would probably do the same. You don't appear to have a healthy relationship with competetive gaming. ¬_¬

Not since we moved to a house with a basement where I've set up a comfy couch with tv and console. It seems that women (well,my wife at least) instinctively avoid these man-caves because I don't think she ever disturbed my gaming bliss.

My girlfriend only messes with me when she's doing much, much better than me. The downside to a gamer girlfriend is the massive amounts of shit-talk when she beats you, haha.

Just turn off the TV whenever she's watching a movie, TV, or whatever. Whatever you do, don't ignore the problem. Be as petty as you can.

My wife is pretty respectful of when I want to play some Playstation. Sometimes when I am in a bad mood from work she will even insist that I play some NHL to unwind.

Saying that though she controls the TV most of the time and I get my gaming on early in the morning as she is the night-owl in the relationship.

I got myself a room to myself to avoid most of the "spur of the moment" crap. Though she'll still barge in and ask me to hang up laundry, help make the food or talk about something that can probably wait. And that's when I've notified her that I'll be busy gaming for a few hours. Ah well, I suppose it's better than when we only had one tv and she would walk in front of it time and time again just to go take a smoke.

Before we moved I would play in the living room or our bedroom and she would like to use the TV that I would happen to be playing on. Or sometimes when she was annoyed with me she would just straight up turn off the console. Since we've moved we now have an extra bedroom which I converted to my "man cave" and she leaves my completely alone. I can now enjoy games and even QL uninterrupted.

my fiancee is a gamer as well, and she gets that it is my primary source of stress relief. A lot of the time we are playing together anyway, but if I wanna sit down on the PC for a couple of hours and stab fools in TF2, she's pretty great about that.

The only distraction is when I'm playing the 360 and she moves in front of the TV to get into her clothes drawers. However, considering it's usually the underwear drawer she's going to, I generally deal with it haha.

OP, it sounds like your wife is being more passive-aggressive rather than playful with what she is doing. I'd suggest a frank discussion discussion

lol @ all of the responses regarding divorce.

You know what the passive aggressive comment someone mentioned probably sounds right.. Honestly, shes never really cared for the fact that I play games really.   For a while she would mention how much of a waste of time / non productive yada yada yada.... however, she's pretty much given up on the argument after all of these years, so yeah.. passive aggressive is probably about right.

Either way, it is what it is, and I just deal with it, partly because my wife is hot, and  as I mentioned before I rarely play when they're around just because its ME time.

I simply try not to game when my wife is home, I usually only game at night(since she goes to sleep before me and wakes up after me) because my wife wants to take over the tv whenever she is home and I try to spend quality time with my family when we're both home. I also don't like to play violent videogames with my daughter in the room so it's easier for me to just game when I'm working from home using my gaming PC or onlive, or after everybody goes to sleep. Because of this I tend not to game on my ps3 much these days. Hopefully this will all change when my wife goes back to work.

But yes I feel your pain because my wife will talk endlessly no matter what's going on in the game so I'm always pausing every 10 seconds when she bothers me when I'm gaming. My wife also sees me getting frustrating but doesn't care and will continue to talk about nothing of consequence when I'm gaming. But hey that's marriage.

It's mostly my girlfriend destroying me every time we play a game. Absolutely no interest playing anything that makes you save your game, but put a fighting game in her hand and everyone is dead. Not even a button masher, either.

We don't live together, so obviously when she's around I'm not going to be on games.

Yeah, Madam Imaginary Pants is always slapping me and poking my arm when I'm trying to play games. That's when I imagine a movie starring Brad Pitt, Johnny Depp and George Clooney playing in the other room and she runs off to watch it.
