Games With Gamepass

This is a special edition of my collection for "Games I played through Gamepass and don't own." If I really like Gamepass and keep it maybe this becomes multiple lists over the course of years. For now, just making it while I take advantage of 1$ subs that's going away.

I make a habit of putting a number (1/5 to 5/5) and about a paragraph on each game. You know, for posterity. A heart (<3) means I love the game and it's one of my all time favorites.

I haven't written any reviews here for a while, and that's because my focus is on rewriting older reviews from lists past and putting them up on Backloggd. When I get up to present you'll find out how I feel about all these new games. Spoilers, I loved Tunic!

  • Xbox Series X (April 2nd, 2022) - 3/5

  • Xbox Series X (March 16th, 2022) - 5/5 <3

  • Xbox Series X (February 13th, 2022) - 3/5 maybe

  • Xbox Series X (February 13th, 2022) - 2/5 - Was thinking it might be cool as a game where you play as an undead faction fighting against the living, which is indeed neat, however it just doesn't feel good to play. The main thing is that attacks, at least in the first half hour, have like next to no range so you really have to get up enemies asses to damage them. Additionally all the alternate forms I found seemed really ineffectual and boring, which defeats the purpose of having a bunch of different forms I think. Also, it's a roguelike.

  • Xbox Series X (February 13th, 2022) - 3/5 - Seems alright if you really like contra. This is a decent one of those with a fairly fun feeling air dodge. Not really something that catches my attention - I can't imagine I'll play much more.

  • Xbox Series X (January 18th, 2022) - 5/5 <3 - A wonderful game! Incredible gameplay loop filled with satisfying grinding, and a fair amount of experimentation that keeps things interesting! The game also has a wonderful way of getting you to think creatively, prompting you to make wacky custom builds at every turn, making sure you don't let yourself stop trying new things. From start to finish this game is a delight, and is well worth sinking into for hours at a time.

  • Xbox Series X (January 17th, 2022) - Early Access 3/5 - Has pottential, but is clearly not ready for primetime. Between performance issues and some unpolished gameplay, I think it best to wait for 1.0 for now.

  • Xbox Series X (December 8th, 2021) - 4/5 - This game makes an amazing first impression, however as you get further in the campaign its rough edges start to show. While the world is large, the grapple hook is great and combat is fun, you also begin to realize the world is the same all over, the other devices are clunky to switch to and use, and you tire of the gameplay loop long before its over. Also, as a side note, didn't get much out of the multiplayer myself.

  • Xbox Series X (November 19th, 2021) - 4/5 - Neat little game, for the price of free it's a fairly good way to spend an evening. There are some details in the game that are neat to see represented, like box art of actual Gamecube games, but it's not all that common and mostly what you're in for is slowly methodically unpacking in a way that tells a simple short story.

  • Xbox Series X (November 7th, 2021) - 5/5 - A really solid coop platformer that is brimming with extremely creative and ambitious sequences and one off mechanics. While not every section lands and each tends to go on a bit too long, it's remarkable how much they do to keep things fresh and how in nearly every area Cody and May get

super different things to do. It's really well done. While I think it could've been paced better, it's still an amazing ride and I applaud the variety they achieved.

  • Xbox One (November 6th, 2021) - 2/5 - Realizing that I'm never going to get into this, seems really complicated and beyond me. Even just the main menu is too much for me, and it doesn't seem like there's a story mode for me, a fighting game amateur, to enjoy so not much here for me, and even if there is anything here it's hidden so well it might as well not exist. Glad I only tried it when it was free on gamepass.

  • Xbox Series X (October 31st, 2021) - 4/5 - Fairly good low key puzzle game. There's not a ton of substance to it far as I can tell (note: didn't finish) but it's fun for what it is.

  • Xbox Series X (October 30th. 2021) - 3/5 - Played some. Makes a great first impression, but the combat seems a little too demanding and complicated for my tastes. Very easy to mess up and leave yourself super vulnerable. Passing on it.

  • Xbox Series X (October 13th, 2021) - 2/5 - Couldn't really get into it. The matches I played seemed to be all action all the time, no real ebb and flow to it. Not what I'm looking from from a L4D successor. Maybe also I'm not in the place of my life anymore where I'll just matchmake into groups so it's a little harder for it to fit into my life even if it was working for me.

  • Xbox Series X (August 19th, 2021) - 1/5 - Feels like total ass to play, especially on a controller! It's extremely fiddly and asks for a lot of precision which can all go out the window with one misinput. Feels like a total waste of time when that happens, this game would be better if you could Life is Strange rewind or something. Anyway I am done with this.

  • Xbox Series X (August 9th, 2021) - 2/5 - While it's a good looking game with its focus on dynamic lighting, that all looks really good, it didn't feel very good to play. Not especially responsive. Attacks have a lot of end lag when compared to 2020 GOTY Hades and they don't stagger enemies that much. Not fun! Also I think the game being built having to light up dark dungeon rooms is baffling - too much of an annoying thing. Anyway.

  • Xbox One (August 8th, 2021) - 4/5 - Fun little trifle of a game! The combat puzzles, wherein you run around grab weapons and use them to get around and kill enemies, are really fun. There's a good variety and some good zany energy to the gameplay. I didn't get super far, but that's fine. What I played was very fun.

  • Xbox Series X (August 8th, 2021) - 3/5 - My apartment is not present in the world here. I guess the satellite data is from a few years ago before it was built. Those are all of my thoughts about this game. Flying is hard.

  • Xbox Series X (August 7th, 2021) - 3/5 - Seems really cool and atmospheric, but as soon as it got a little difficult I just lost interest entirely in engaging with it. The combat feels satisfying, but also sloppy and I don't enjoy having to be good at it. Dropped it pretty early on.

  • Xbox 360 (June 1st, 2021) - 3/5 - Fun for messing around for a bit, not much of a game to me because all of the missions and stuff seem too annoying to bother with.

  • Xbox Series X (May 21st, 2021) - 2/5 - No thanks.

  • PC (March 24th, 2021) - 4/5 - Really fun game to play multiplayer with a large group! Might not be so much content though, would get old if you wanted to play it longer than a session or two. Still, very cool!

  • Xbox Series X (March 11th, 2021) - 3/5 - Seems like if you got the hang of it you could make amazing stuff, but the mutliplayer server I tried to make didn't work so wasn't able to play with friends. Also the tools seem pretty unintuitive.

  • Xbox Series X (March 11th, 2021) - 3/5 -Seems fine I guess, but I didn't enjoy it as much as the folk I played it with and I don't imagine I'll play it again ever.

  • Xbox Series X (March 10th, 2021) - 2/5 - Doesn't feel good to play, regardless of whether or not the level making tools were good (they seem a bit clunky) that's a fatal sin for a platformer.

  • Xbox Series X (February 25th, 2021) - 3/5 - This seems alright, but it mostly makes me want to play Rollercoaster Tycoon 2, back when it was isometric and limited. The full freedom to do whatever you want is a bit too much for my tastes. It's cool how you can download people's takes on existing rollercoasters from the internet.

  • Xbox Series X (January 25th, 2021) - 3/5 - Mike Mahardy says this game is good. Seems kind of neat to have a top down game where can throw coins as distractions like Hitman, it seems too complicated to play on a whim.

  • Xbox One (November 13th, 2020) - 4/5 - I played a couple hours of this so far, it's really fun! Nice idle game, good flow to it, unlocking new moves to make you more and more mobile seems cool! There is some issue with side missions cluttering up things and making it hard to see where to go to advance the story, and it being an open world you can end up traversing the same areas countless times, but still it's pretty fun!

  • Xbox Series X (November 10th, 2020) - 3/5 - I don't really like Tetris all that much, this seems like a fine way to play if you do like Tetris. It looks kind of nice.

  • Xbox Series X (November 10th, 2020) - 3/5 - Really visually striking game, especially in 4K, movement feels pretty good. Only problem is it's a roguelike which, I suddenly remember, the first one was too. As a result I lost interest after a few minutes of this. It is no Hades.

  • Xbox One (October 16th, 2020) - 4/5 - Seems really good and intriguing! My only issue with it is I think the action commands are too demanding, and it gets way too hard way too fast. There's a boss fight early on where a boss can just take out over half your HP in one attack and that sucks. Fuck that.

  • Xbox One (September 16th, 2020) - 2/5 - I find it really really boring and I was glad when I died because I could stop playing. In some ways it's fine. It's weapon design seems fine, its enemy design also fine, but "fine" is enough to interest me.

  • Xbox One (September 15th, 2020) - 4/5 - I was more into this than I expected. I had played the original browser version before, but it's surprisingly still fun to run around the west shooting people in pursuit of your target, and hats as health is a perfectly done mechanic, especially since you can shoot enemy hats off to get a free one. That said, I got to the ending and I was disappointed. You don't get to just get your revenge, instead they built a really long and hard sequence with no checkpoints before you can get your man. I was hoping to finish it the night I started, but fuck that. I think the original did it better, was much more straightforward if I recall.

  • Xbox One (September 14th, 2020) - 1/5 - It's an exceedingly simple game that handles like ass. Wasn't worth playing for 3 minutes.

  • Xbox Series X (September 13th, 2020) - 5/5 - It's a really good package, and I've gotten a lot of mileage out of it playing custom multiplayer with a community I'm in. It's a lot of fun, I like how each game offers different maps and a ton of tools for making wacky modes. The single player campaigns seem fine if terribly dated. I don't have time to play through them all.

  • Xbox One (September 12th, 2020) - 3/5 - It's a pretty game, but I don't like the way the cars handle (really hard to do anything) and I don't really want to do races because that sounds really boring. It's a shame the weekly rotation can't just be unlocked from the jump, would've liked to see what the current season was before bailing out.

  • Xbox One (September 11th, 2020) - 2/5 - Played some of the first mission, I don't really like cover shooters to begin with, and this one both has some really annoying staples of the genre (such as strawberry jam and AI teammates who have to revive you) as well as not feeling good to shoot the guns.

  • Xbox One (September 10th, 2020) - 2/5 - This seems bad! It's slow, it doesn't feel good to play, it's very boring, and there's nothing exciting in the first level. Also there are unskippable cutscenes. Hard pass!

  • Xbox One (September 9th, 2020) - 5/5 - This is a version of Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night without the problems that plagued the Switch version, however I couldn't find time to replay all of it.

  • Xbox One (September 9th, 2020) - 3/5 - This game seems good, but it is super not suited to a gamepad. You control a mouse and there are not enough convenient ways to get around that built in for that to not be annoying.
