GOTY 2014

2014 was another interesting year for video games. When considering the games I played and really liked for this year, there weren't that many that I went in knowing that I would like them. There were a lot of surprises for me this year.

It was another pretty great year for games, as shown by my list for this year.

List items

  • Bayonetta 2 was one of the games that I knew I was going to like going into this year. I was a fan of the original, and as long as the sequel did most of what the first did (plus a little extra) I would be happy.

Well, Bayonetta 2 did a lot more than that. Every aspect of the game is dialed way up from the previous installment. The combat is better, the set pieces are more extravagant and exciting and it runs and looks fantastic.

There are games on this list that I have put way more hours into... but there aren't any that I had a better time with. Bayonetta 2 is fun, pure and simple; and my favorite game of 2014.

  • I was a little worried at first. I have never played a Dragon Age game before; and even with me really liking the Mass Effect series, I was a little iffy on Inquisition. Now that I've finished it with 80 hours played, I can see my hesitation was unfounded.

Dragon Age: Inquisition is a fantastic game with a great cast, fun/flashy combat and beautiful graphics. (Like in other Bioware games) I really liked the character interactions in the game and the stories for each of them.

I bought a PS4 this Black Friday and this is the game that I got with it. I don't think I could have made a better choice to start this generation.

  • It's as simple as this: Mario Kart 8 is fun... a lot of fun.

P.S.: The multiplayer (online and split-screen) is also fun and pretty good.

  • Shadow of Mordor is a very late entry for me, but an important one, nonetheless.

There isn't much that I can say about this game that hasn't already been said. I loved the combat (as I have in the Arkham games) and the Nemesis system is fantastic. Shadow of Mordor is an excellent game from top to bottom.

  • Hyrule Warriors was one of the bigger surprises of the year for me. I've never played a Warriors game before, so I was a little hesitant with this one. But I decided to pick it up in the end, and I couldn't be happier.

Hyrule Warriors is a blast to play. It's got easy (but still fun) combat and it looks great. I had quite a bit of fun with this one.

  • "It's just like playing an episode of the show" is probably one of the best things anyone could say about this one. And I'll say it too.

South Park: The Stick of Truth is funny, it looks great and it's a pretty good RPG with a fun/interesting battle system. I liked it quite a bit.

  • The Wolf Among Us was an interesting game, to say the least. I don't think I liked it quite as much as the first season of the Walking Dead, but I still had a pretty good time with it.

It had an interesting story (I always like good detective stories), and great characters. I liked Bigby's progression through the story, and thought it was really well told.

The Wolf Among Us was great, and really lends itself to a binge playthrough.

  • Now Smash Bros. is a series that I've never really gotten into. I played a bit of Melee, but not enough to really get into it; and I didn't care for Brawl.

But I have to say that I had quite a bit of fun with the Wii U version of this game. It looks and runs great, and the combat is fun and easy to get into. It's a pretty good party game to say the least, if a little infuriating at times.

    P.S.: I didn't care for the 3ds version.

  • Tropical Freeze is a great game. It's a fun and challenging ride; and it looks great. I think it's much better than Returns (but that sentiment comes down to the use of waggle). I really enjoyed my time with Donkey Kong.

  • I've always been into Phoenix Wright games, but found I could never finish a Layton game (except the first). Layton games tend to wear a little thin over time for me, but the inclusion of Ace Attorney gameplay really enhanced the overall product. I liked this one quite a bit.
