You know, I honestly don't care about any of that. I think that the fact of the matter is that Bioshock doesn't need a sequel, and this sequel could taint what made the original so special story and philosophy wise.
Your excitement should have subsided when you heard Irrational wasn't developing it. It's become a franchise whore now. Everyone gets a piece. No offense to the 2k Marin team. Maybe the game will be great, but I reserve the right to be skeptical of them until we've seen their first full game.
I must admit, from the gameplay reveal I just looked at it and thought "oh hey, this looks EXACTLY the same as Bioshock 1" -- I mean the HUD, even the little pictures of the people talking are all EXACTLY the same. But I've only seen like 30-seconds of the game so that's unfair to judge on just those merits.
I don't like the sound of the Big Daddy thing mind.
I'm still definitely going to check it out, but I didn't think the first one was the most amazing thing since sliced bread and I doubt this is going to change my mind.

you know i like all of those thing, but what does any of that have to do with the original post? he was talking about how formulaic the story is and you just listed a bunch of random features. BTW i am very excited about sea of dreams

Yeah, especially in this case. People are saying how they are such huge fans of the first; what kind of fan are you if you are already so skeptical well, WELL before the game is even released? At least fucking play the game, then pass your judgment. sheesh.
Bioshock wasn't a very fun game to begin with, but I like your ideas of Bioshock 2 taking place before Bioshock 1. There's no chance I'm getting Bioshock 2. They had no reason to make a Bioshock 2 other than to cash in on the hype.
Eh, I am waiting to pass judgment. They want to release a movie with the third game(supposedly), so I expect them to throw some money around to get shit done.

I agree, I wanted a prequel or a parallel story. I don't like that I wont be playing Jack? That Andrew Ryan or Atlus won't be stalking me through camera's and my radio. That I won't be playing 1...
To me, it all really ended in a very conclusive way. All lose ends were tied up. All wrapped up in a a nice, neat package. But, I still wanted more. So they are banking on that. Can you blame them? What major gaming franchise doesn't?
All I know is that I want more Rapture, more sci-fi horror action, more steampunkery, more plasmids, more crazy over the top villains. More Bioshock. The first game will make awesome source materiel.
Sorry to see so many people unhappy about Bioshock 2. Just hoping it turns out good for them. The more the merrier.

I agree 100% with jakob here, and that doesn't happen a lot, so take note: Bioshock 2, if they just keep with the original's formula and don't mess with what ain't broke, will be great. If they decide to make it totally different and screw up the integrated storytelling and all the features that made the first so great, then there will be a problem. Still, from what I saw of the recent gameplay video, it looks like Bioshock. And that is a good thing! Let us see how it is first before passing judgment, please.

And then in a year, the revisionist historians will decide that the game was terrible despite its great reviews. Like so many bad sequels before it. Therefore, I will win out in the end.
I think its pointless to resist the game now that we all know its coming. Maybe begging for Bioshock 2 to not exist before it was announced would be fine, but they aren't going to stop now.
I've been playing it for about 3 hours now, and I have to say that I'm damn impressed with BioShock 2. Anyone that's unhappy with the game either hasn't played it or wants to hate it so much that they just don't want to admit that the new developers actually managed to pull it off.
Then dont fucking play the game. Damn, so much bitching and moaning because another game came out? Not that it sucks but that they made another? Apparently it is pretty damn good. You guys need to stop being such bitches and claim that you own the game or something. Its not yours. It belongs to the devs. Its not like there would be only one adventure in this place.
