I added iphone icon. If you make a 150 by 150 png image and put that meta tag in when you bookmark the site on your iphone to the home screen you get a nice looking icon for it.

Css could be reduced a bit but then separation is also a good thing, always a catch 22 on that. A lot of people also put their javascript at the bottom of the page. To be valid XHTML strict any javascript in the body needs to be wrapped in commented CDATA though.

Here though I have called up just one JS file which is js-library.js

In that you have...

// JavaScript Library Loader: Load javascript files, keep out of header. Replace with required js files.
var jsLibrary = new Array();
jsLibrary[0] = '<script type="text/javascript" src="http://partner.googleadservices.com/gampad/google_service.js"></script>';

jsLibrary[30] = '<script type="text/javascript" src="http://media.giantbomb.com/media/js/js-assests.js"></script>';
for (counter=0; counter<jsLibrary.length; counter++)
   document.write(jsLibrary[counter]);

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This is good for additions in regard to template's but also reduced the load in the header

Any snippets of javascript or mootools functions etc you create an assests file which you put them all in and keep them out of internal scripts in the body or header..

They why change something if it aint broken comment is something very bad in everything and not a good thing to say.
Cave people were quite happy with how they were, nothing was broken but they went on to improve themselves.
People were happy with IE back in the day before other things came out. IE 5.5 was not exactly broken. Firefox 3 was not exactly broken yet you have 3.5 and you should see the mock ups for firefox 3.7 - Sex!

Mock ups and comments I even said probably not get implemented but the ideas and thoughts and input can be taken and used to what ever end someone wishes.

My SEO comment I meant in terms of mark up etc, there is a lot more to it I know, the social network, linking generation, search engine association.....

The site though is actually broken, there is a lot of overhead going on. There are several javascript loops using mootools that actually eat at your memory. Open a few tabs with videos as if you were going to chain load them up ready to watch later. You will notice your browser get quite sluggish.
I got addons for work use and my script debugger throws up some moans and groans.
Did not mention these as these the guys probably know about and not point of my original post.

I knew you would get people who are protective of what they love and I expected some of the comments but it is also nice to see people also get what I was on about. I am a fan who is in thw web industry who knows some stuff and offering his input to help improve what he loves.
I have recently been working very hard to work on our companies starting point system. A template structure of css, html and javascript we use as a framework for our sites. Fluid layout with content first and working in all browsers apart from IE4 (that is no simple thing to do) and OO CSS and as little mark up as possible.
Anyway. No harm offering help is there? I love loads of things about the site, I think the editor for the forums for example is one of the nicer ones out there for example. I will get a round to showing the giang bomb site header code and show you how I would do it. Simple things to change but again would just make things snappier.

@Lowbrow: I get paid very well for what I do and I would not move from New Zealand to the US. I live 5 minutes from the beach. Not looking for a job.
There is code style ,that is one thing but then there is correct Mark up, Web standards etc (not met here) The site for the data is very streamlined, yep, even said that but nothing is ever perfect and always room for improvement. Anyone who moans at people giving their two cents (as long as it makes sense and practical) is a bad designer, programmer or just a prune :P
A web browser takes the code and renders it, the more lines it has to go through the longer it takes. The DOM has to load and if things have to many loops or bloated it takes longer to load. Any bad mark up or invalid XHTML the browser needs to render and figure out what to do which again is extra processing and takes longer to load. I did a report for a partner company to show how important all this was, they were surprised how much of a difference all this made (being pure developers) and we now get a lot of work through them.

@The_A_Drain I never said they did not. There are lots of css errors though but I never brought that up. The bit at the end was direct to people like yourself as there are people who dabble in the web stuff if you read the forums you would know.

As I said lots of times I was just showing I am not just some whiner (like in the other thread linked) I also said How I think the site is great more then once. Good example of why not to skim read stuff :P

@
LordAndrew  I did not mention the back end. Misconception there. XHTML, Javascript etc is run locally on your machine by your web browser. The data comes in and it makes sense of it. The back end stuff as I said they guys do an amazing job, The data, the way it works and how it pulls it out AND things like the API are great stuff and they should if not already sell the CMS etc, It is a good wiki and data based CMS and many people would use it.
Having errors in your XHTML etc as well as not being very streamlined add to the load time quite a lot. Go to the apple site, always loads fast. View the image of the menu for example.
http://images.apple.com/global/nav/images/globalnavbg.png
Sprite assets, Google, Yahoo, Youtube etc all do similar as well.
Lots of images you need to run through each and load them. One image, load done. Every hovered over a link and the background has to pop up for a second there? With a sprite it is already there, just css positions.

To you guys a site loads and you do not notice or care for these things and sometimes it is hard to put over to clients how much effort these things take and actually how important they are. But it makes a big difference.

If the bomb guys said "heres our photoshop files etc, go whip up some templates and lets see" and implemented them you would notice faster load times, And that is a good thing.

I had some thoughts, put them out there and showed I am not just whining so just to post things like
@The_A_Drain is just rather silly, no?

@atomic_dumpling: Uploading, Choice of WYSIWYG, Pop ups etc are all really good. Lovely touches through out the site but I gripe at some of the interface, layout and code and the header and just throwing suggestions.
The site is great but it is a beast in regard to the loading a lot of it can be solved through the html, css, Javascript stuff. Standards, code practises, Dom re-leaf, header load re-leaf would speed up the load time quite a bit. The Site Does not really need SEO due to the nature it is.
As I said I am a designer/developer myself so I totally go on the defensive with my work when someone pics at it. Well I did. What makes you good is if you can bite your lip and take it it and use that information. My take is that there is no harm to it and there is actually something you can take on board and do. It is how you learn and improve your skills. You also know not everyone will be happy with something, they never are but if your good you also know a good site/interface can be done people are not aware of but if shown to them then it is something else.

Position of a post reply button for example. At work we do studies on these sorts of things (mainly forms) and you learn to how you design your next projects.

Anyway...

The software these sites are built on is pretty nifty I must say, if the guys built thir sites properly then they do have a template system. These are just skins and should/probably be OO/modular in nature so different sites would have a similar structure but also able to be different in look and function as well. I am building magazine sites for a company. There are five but each will have the same functions and look just about
Any time a menu using the magazine colours, background images of colour or style etc are all in a css file for that magazine. Switching this switches the design for the other magazines.

That is how you build these things and The guys are on to it here and will have done the same/similar here. They will have or will look to sell their CMS/Wiki to others as well and so would need to have template and expansion through modules in place.

As I mentioned, through the company I work for We are dealing with a couple of pure developer companies to to the designs for a few web application interfaces. You work with them to nut out the design, you have a few photoshop files etc. Since I am both Designer and Developer I know both sides of the coin and that is a great thing to have so I know what to think about when I design in regard to how it will work. You take these and then build a template. From that you build all the pages you would need of a site as well as a file with examples of all pop up styles, error pop ups etc. Comment the code and had it over.

I am just saying how things roughly happen from a company view. So yeah I know what the guys would say seeing things like this, I respect them greatly, and I know what comments would come from people here.

I just wanted to put my two cents and spent a bit of time just doing some tweaks. The right hand side is a shave smaller in width for example so things align to the grid system. The grid system for example is there to create structure and also works on the magic ratio. Basically when people look at the site it looks uniform and appealing.

I myself already know I Can do a better job on the feature area right side. Concept there but I can make that look better if I put a bit more time to it. I think a few other things I would change out right but that is how I work.

My only Goal is to help improve and there is no harm putting your two cents down and if it helps the guys improve things then it will.

Front page for example - set as xhtml strict doctype but has 281 Errors and a few warnings. Quite a few are just things not closed off />

You can ge a new front end of the site (CSS, Javascript, HTML...) valid xhtml strict on here doing all its things

I have even looked over some of the mootools stuff and other scripts, Switching to jquery you can do similar in 2 lines that takes 10 in mootools. We used mootools at work but switched over for a number of reasons, one being time to do the same job, lines of code and the kb.

Just providing a bit of info and background etc, Just showing that I am not just randomly ranting, I got experience so Know what I am on about and just putting my thoughts over :)

IF the guys dropped me a mesage ans said - "Hey, create some templates based on our designs, and pass them over for us to look at and we will see what we will see" even if they dont use them or use them fully or even if they go and use them. I would say - SURE! cus I just want to help make something great better.

On Code wise, Bit of a Star medal Award thing...

Who knows what's going on here...

<div class="feature offer">Something here</div>

I can tell you, you would be surprised with the comments I will put down coming from so called experts in the industry.

I did the interface for company we have relations for and the guy implementing it posted on skype "You got loads of css mistakes" which there wasn't.

font-family:;
font-style:;
font-weight:;
line-height:;

You would use in your css for sorting out all paragraphs for example. you may stick these all on one line too.

font:normal normal normal 1em/1.2em Arial,Helvetica;
That is everything in one 1em/1,2em being font size and line height.

Just something for you to know hehe :)

Hey all.
I love Giant Bomb, Its great and the guys who built the site are amazing and everyone that pumps content, stats and everything in the site are all awesome.....
But something always niggles me.

The site has a nice design but as a web designer and developer some elements bug me quite often, I can not help it.
The code even bothers me, I know, really sad but it does. The logo being two images bothers me as well. I know, I know what your thinking. I can not help it.

Another thing is the first page main features area. It does not feel right for me. I Know! I am dissing the bomb and I know its the bomb! but I cant help it!

I have done this very quickly and I used my grid system and it is not perfect as its a bit rushed as its just a concept.
Not much, Just alignments, tweaking of a few areas, making some things a bit clearer etc. Missed off the footer as I would not change it.
The main thing i did was re-work the feature area. Not quite happy with the right side, just a concept more then anything. Building it using Mootools (since that is the framework used mainly on the site) fading in and out and the right sliding to show what is highlighted with the text over the image popping up too. With these sorts of things you can also stick in video. So when there is a big new video it is a great place to stick it. (bit like the old Giant Bomb Site)

No Caption Provided

When I have time I am going to do my vision of the Giant bomb site, wont change the style, I love it, just the way it looks and feels.
Giantbomb is basically an online web software now as well as being an awesome gaming media site. I think I could do a good interface making it even slicker and easier to use. Just for me and the sake of it, I will post it here and I know thing will come of it etc but just want to, it is a lot of content and a challenge of which I like to take on. I been getting put on a lot of jobs of late for web interface design for large systems, people are liking what I do and I think I can do the Bomb Justice.

I know E3 has been and gone, I been soooo busy I have had not the time to make this thread and I have been thinking about it for a while.

Listening to the podcasts from E3 and reading the news a few things have come up that I would have liked to see or know more about. I am sure the Bomb Team could help out or people here.

1. Waving Dragon:

Paul Barnett is a living legend if you ask me. In one of the E3 Podcasts he talked about the Dragon Age Dragon and how it is waving at you.

I would love to see this basically, It really interested me when he mentioned it. It is one of those things you cant just hear about, you got to see it.

2. E3 Chairs.
Not only Gianbomb touched on this about E3 but more then one of the gaming press went on about Chairs in E3. EA chairs generally being uncomfortable, Some with spikes, some super comfy ones. Sony with bugger all.
I want to see these things god dam it!

3. FIT Girls working up a sweat All day for 3 days!
 Paul Barnett and Karry mentioned the really really Hot Girls for EA's Wii Active, playing the game and working out all day every day. Yeah there was a guy but if a girl says one was really hot and sweaty, GOD I WANT TO SEE THIS.
I love my girlfriend a lot, she is really hot but come on. Fit girl working out getting hot and sweaty. You can not just mention this and not show anything!

4. Need for speed Competition
Is There video of this, Sounded Funny?

5. Orgasms watching Star Wars.
I did some work experience at Bulfrog a long time ago now, was fun. I made some very good friends who I keep in touch with who are in the industry. He was At E3 (far to busy to take pictures, dam fool! (Love you Tim) But he and others did hear about a few girls getting off on the really basey vibrating speakings in the floor when the Old Republic Trailers played.
Who were these girls?

6. The Green Room:
How bad was this, what on earth did it look like and was what it served as bad as people say it was. Heard this from Giantbomb and other sites too.

7. EA room of bliss.
Massages and more - must see!

There is a few other things I would love to know or see about E3 and when I re-listen to some podcasts and remember I will post but what about you? I am sure there are a few unanswered questions about E3.

I have been saying this for the last week or so as i have been linking this recently a lot.

- Yeah Could be fake, maybe it is BUT...
- You can post 10+ VOIP or video freakouts of kids AND Adults in regard to World Of Warcraft.

- You have that women when the Vent Abuse Guy invades her vent, She goes mental.
- You got that German kid freaking out being filmed by his dad
- You got many Voice clips while wow is being played of kids bawling their eyes out dying, leveling (on a twink so dont want to) and more.
