The best games of Japan get translated and put out in English speaking areas of the world, and the rubbish games don't. This is why Japanese games seem to be of a better standard, just because you're only seeing the best of them.
It's also a matter of personal choice. My most memorable games are Half Life series, System/Bioshock, Thief series, GTA etc...all of which are western.
Man this is the saddest/happiest I've been all year! ...It's been a pretty uneventful year for me so far, but still!
Congrats, @rorie :-). I'm looking forward to your input on the site!
Also, I'll just reiterate a desire for more That Ain't No Game. The third series should be WUTANG Clan, where you join up with Ryan and perhaps others for a more varied discussion on the films. :-D
Just get carts! It's cheaper and it's not that big of a deal. I tend to leave one in at a time until I complete it though unless I'm at home and I can keep them in a drawer or something.
Plus, you could sell them when you're done and with the prices being so fixed, you might get something approaching the amount you paid for it back.
Or you can spend £40 each and every time to be free of a minor inconvenience.
I don't see the point in having a third person game if you don't get the benefit of the camera being third person. Most of them don't give the character enough design to make them look consistently interesting for 8 hours or so. The only other major benefit is being able to move the camera around the level before returning to the player, which never happens in FPS' because it would take you out of the character and seem jarring.
