ThePhantomnaut's Trip To WonderCon 2011 For The Video Games!!!

WonderCon 2011 with people!
For comic book fans, last week was WonderCon 2011 at San Francisco, CA. On behalf of me and my friend's college newspaper, we visited the event to check some stuff out. I had experience in going to San Diego Comic-Con International last year, my friend aka Editor-In-Chief was having his first exposition experience in general. While checking out some general stuff over there and with a press pass and lots of water, I was playing some of the VIDEO GAMES over there. Some released, some coming on the horizon, and lots and lots of Nintendo 3DS products.

Nintendo's 3D Handheld Extraordinaire

As expected, Nintendo and Capcom (the only video game companies at WC) brought out many Nintendo 3DS games for attendees to try out. From both, there was a couple of people trying out Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition. I had some fun and had a pretty good match against a competent player who knew good tactics. That and many other launch titles were available to try out but there was also some new upcoming ones.

What's there to say? It's Ocarina of Time in 3D. I can't really remember much what was in the demo but I believe the levels in the demo were during the beginning part of the game. Ocarina of Time 3D looks similar to the 64 original but much cleaner. It's good to see a consistent frame rate with 3D enabled and disabled.

In terms of controls, I expected that most of the combat was with the main buttons while aiming required movement of the 3DS I believe. Navigation and items can be seen and interacted with the stylus.

Unfortunately, the demo of this latest DOA entry didn't feature wireless multiplayer like Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition. There was only a handful of characters to play even if some characters unavailable were some of my opponents. Nonetheless, it plays much like a regular Dead or Alive game including counters and multi-tiered stages. During my small time with it, I noticed differences in both 3D and 2D modes. It didn't look that bad in 3D mode but in sacrifice was the frame rate but it was restored to 60 fps when 2D is enabled. A note to add is that the 3D distracted me from the series' breast physics as I almost didn't notice.

Sans the story, it's Resident Evil's "The Mercenaries" mini game in a cartridge. It has all of the main functions on the face and shoulder buttons and the items and navigation are in the bottom screen. Now being able to shoot while moving, it felt decent. It doesn't stop me from not aiming in a stationary position with the thumbstick.

When walking through Nintendo's huge booth, I saw the logo to Uprising and was in anticipation mode after seeing gameplay footage months back. As I am still getting used to the 3DS in general, I picked the novice stage as opposed to the other harder choice. Thank goodness that the controls only require the d-pad/thumbstick, left shoulder button, and stylus. Unfortunately, my anticipation for the game reduced after my time with it.

The first part left me either enjoying its rail shooting approach or partially nauseated due to the ecstatic nature when 3D is enabled. When I did have fun, it was cool to see Pit move around the plane and be able to do powerful homing attacks on enemies. On the ground in the second section, Pit felt very awkward to control as there is now a movable camera. An additional problem is that it's too close to Pit which obscures some enemies. The boss fight was not as bad but still had the existing issues.

Playable Superheroes

The Green Lantern, Thor, and Captain America are getting their own video game adaptations. Just by watching them, they don't really look that fun to play. What was shown in Green Lantern: Rise of the Manhunters was the cooperative mode featuring Hal Jordan and Sinestro killing some enemies and doing some team actions. What I have seen from Thor: God of Thunder was from the Wii version and seemed like a budget PS2 game, graphics and gameplay-wise. Captain America: Super Soldier was the more tolerable as it had a combat system that looked like it came from Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time but was lacking and was plagued by a horrible and consistent frame-rate.

Activision was also there for the panel of Spider-Man: Edge of Time. It was mostly about the post-mortem of Shattered Dimensions and what to look out for in Edge of Time. It was cool though to see writer Peter David and Spider-Man voice actor Josh Keaton talk about Edge of Time.

IT'S MAHVEL 3 BAYBEE!!!!

For my visits on Friday and Saturday, there was a large and consistent amount of people blocking the way between Capcom and the huge shirt merchandise store just to watch and play Marvel vs. Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds; despite being released for more than a month. This version I believe featured the latest patch that reduced Sentinel's health and had Jill Valentine and Shuma Gorath playable.

Out of all the games I played over there, I used most of my time playing Marvel 3. Nothing really else to say but that I have learned a bit from my fights over there. I realized I was very repetitive and will not work all the time against everyone. I need to find ways to mixup pressure strategies with my Zero. Nonetheless I was happy with my time practicing Marvel.

Time to get ready for San Diego Comic-Con International 2011 and next year's WonderCon!
