Obscure And Possibly Crappy First Person Shooters Worth A Second Look

  1. You Are Empty

How well this game works seems to vary from play-through to play-through, but it was far better than it was given credit for. It just drips with atmosphere, and plays out like a so bad it's good horror film. Some of the people who worked on S.T.A.L.K.E.R actually worked on this.

2. Defiance

To my knowledge this is the only FPS ever created by SSI, and the brownest game in history. Nearly every surface, texture, and creature is brown. Brown brown brown! It had a novel control mechanic since you're a guy inside a vehicle, but relied a little too heavily on finding secret passages. One of my childhood favorites.

3. Vivisector: Best Within

A rock solid and fairly lengthy FPS that mixes standard FPS game play with some RPG exploration elements and a few Serious Sam like sequences thrown in. Lots of fun, a decent Island of Dr. Moreau story, and you can dino damage dudes till their rib cages hang out.

4, CyClones

One of the better Doom clones of it's generation. This long forgotten gem is a lot of fun to play, and a decent challenge

5. Instinct.

Another half broken gem from Digital Spray (the people who also made You Are Empty). You play three different commandos raiding a Russian military base filled with zombies. The twist is that some horrible event had taken place that caused every one to be wearing track suits. Plus some baffling T&A.

6. Deadly Tide

This is actually an on rails shooter, but it is first person and a thoroughly awesome game despite including a thousand discs.

7. Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis

This may be one of the ugliest games released in the last 9 years, but it's also one of the most realistic and engrossing games of its type ever created. Tons of depth that will take you many hours to master.

8. Ted Nugent's Wild Hunting Adventure

A very solid FPS hunting simulation that teaches you to respect those that you shoot in the face. Plus you can get a guitar that's also a machine gun! Not easy to find though.

  9. Rise of the Triad: Dark War

A lot more depth and variation than your average Doom clone. This is an excellent FPS with extreme gore, multi-level rooms, and 5 different characters to choose from with stats that effect the game play,

10. Blood

Why the heck hasn't some developer stepped up and made another one of these? It's long over due.
