This makes me infinitely sad because a lot of people go on how it's kind of really hard to break into the whole video game journalist industry, mainly because there are already a lot of well known people out there who write about them and have already established industry connections - so why hire on some fresh new kid who might not get the full attention of Cliffy B or Hideo Kojima when you can just send the veteran instead and get much better coverage. So it makes me infinitely sad that Leigh Alexander continues to somehow occupy one of such slots in the industry. She has a real talent for writing that much is very obvious, but her points of view and opinions tend to overshadow the really terrific writing that puts those ideas down in print.

Dude, don't even think of it like that. They aren't occupying some magical spot that someone who actually gave a shit would fill if they were to step down. The entire video games journalism industry is one huge hive-mind circle jerk. They all sit around patting each other on the back, reassuring themselves that they are providing some sort of service to gaming consumers... When in fact all they do is carefully manage and try to hold on to their minor internet celebrity. Anyone who provides a dissenting opinion gets cast out of the inner circle and gets shamed on twitter, or worse has to go work for IGN.

I haven't read through this this whole thread so I'm addressing the OP and the OP only.

I bought a nice gaming PC back when BF3/Witcher 2 was released, it ran me about $1500. Yeah, that's a bit excessive, but I haven't touched a single component on it since I built it, and it stills runs pretty much every single game I throw at it at 60 FPS at 1080p. I'm married with a full time job, so my gaming time is super limited. Because of that I RARELY buy games when they are released. The good thing about this is Steam and now Origin sales. I think the average price I pay for games is something around $10-$15. I think the last game I bought for $59.99 was Skyrim. All of that adds up.

I was a console gamer from the NES - 360 era. I've always had a gaming PC but it was always super limited. It never could max out games, so I stuck with consoles. When I first fired up The Witcher 2, everything changed. I could never go back. When the new consoles were announced and showed off, I shrugged them off. Why? Because I know all or most of those games are coming to PC and guess what? My upgrade price for a new video card is the same cost of a new console AND I can still play all of my old games. For me, it's a no brainer. I'm sticking with PC and waiting until there is an exclusive I absolutely must have before I shell out money on a console.

I'm reallllly digging the Xbox One. I've got a pretty sick PC, so I don't think I'll be getting a console anytime soon, but man it might be hard to avoid getting one this X-mas.

Wow, I guess I'm in the vast minority here but... I like Drew, but in small spurts. His voice and demeanor puts me to sleep. It's cool that he plays games I'll never play but yeah... I was fast forwarding through his whole segment this week.

GB can't dip into that CBS wallet and buy out Sessler or McElroy? Please? Pretty Please?

Dan Carlin is a boss. I've been listening for a long time as well. His history of the Roman Empire is incredible. It should required listening for all fans of history. I also love his series on the Eastern Front in WW2. Just great.

Fair play to his dad for informing us. He didn't have to and everyone here would have accepted that.

Sure, but I'm glad they came out and just demystified the whole thing. Ryan died in his sleep due to his sleep apnea, simple as that. Dying in your sleep is a beautiful, non-dramatic way to go out, so I kinda don't see why they didn't just came out and said that. Sure, it's a private matter, but they'd saved themselves a lot of stupid speculation and inappropriate inquiries. I typed in "Ryan Davis" on twitter a couple of hours after the announcement, and it actually suggested Ryan Davis Suicide... I mean, Jesus Christ...

Unless I missed something, the sleep apnea thing is nothing more than speculation based on the OP playing internet detective. I suspect the OP has neither the medical background or familiarity with the case at hand for it to be anything more than a guess. 'Natural causes' is a broad term which could mean many things. As I understand it, cause of death is a matter of public record in California, for those who have a pressing need to know for whatever reason.

Whatever the exact cause, I do hope that expressing concern (note 'expressing concern', not 'ridiculing') about obesity becomes less taboo in future, as it's hard to overstate how dangerous obesity is. Whenever anybody expressed concern about it on here they were shouted down repeatedly - that is not a healthy way for society to operate. You wouldn't stand by and watch your friend kill themselves with heroin without saying a word, so why is it so taboo to express any concern at all about somebody slowly killing themselves with over-eating? If the person concerned tells you to fuck off and mind your own business, fair enough that's up to them, but for everybody to be scared to say anything and be expected to just stand silent and watch it happen... that is a ridiculous status quo which needs challenging. You aren't a bad person for encouraging somebody you care about to live a healthy lifestyle.

I could not have said it any better. Coming from someone who battled weight issues for the better part of my teenage years and early 20s, I WISH someone would have gotten in my face sooner and told me to get healthy. It took a near heart attack for me to finally wake up and completely change my life around. Quit smoking, quit drinking, worked out every single day, and eventually lost close to 140lbs. Am I the model of peak physical fitness? No, but I strive to attain that every day. I am no longer overweight, but I still push myself everyday to get more cut and more fit. Any one with a solid workout routine will tell you the same thing.

I will not speculate on how our beloved Ryan passed, because I don't think it's respectful nor is it the time since most of us are still in mourning. I just hope that the remaining bombsquad and every one here takes the initiative to better ones health. No more treating your body like a human trash can. Unless of course, you just don't give a fuck... Then to that I say, party on.

I'm so torn up right now, it's crazy. I left work early when I heard the news and have just been in utter shock all night. My wife is away for the week visiting her family so I'm all alone and it's just really hard to deal with. I made sure to call everyone I loved and tell them I loved them. I feel exactly like the OP. I just want to hug someone and be there and grieve with everyone who has been affected by Ryan's passing, but all we have is twitter and this message board. The whole thing is just surreal and so strange.

Wow....just married too. Prayers go out to his family and wife. Is there any chance there'll be some sort of donation fund for her?

I certainly hope so. I would gladly donate money to some sort of funeral fund and I know I am not alone. It's the least we all can do, considering how much he meant to all of us and the gaming community.

As I was flipping through the pictures, it suddenly became private, thanks a lot NORM!

As they should be. It's a bit weird that these were posted. I know I would not want my private photos of my wedding up for all the world to see.
