Is Nintendo about to ruin Zelda?

*Note: there are a couple of things at the end of the blog that are not associated with the main subject.

The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks will be coming out for DS! It will be in the style of the Wind Waker, but the sequel to the Phantom Hourglass.  Here is the trailer. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OUWs0deZwWk

As a Zelda fan, It’s a little hard for me to imagine this combination: Zelda + Boat = Success, but Zelda + Train = ? I feel that Nintendo will be taking a serious risk with this game because of the new element.  I think that most people may agree that the realistic, life-like Zelda is and looks better; I really don’t know.  Some people may be disappointed to see that there won’t be a new Zelda for the Wii.  Some may not even mind that there will be one coming out for the DS.  Whatever the case, do you think that Zelda is going to be forever split in two?  (What I mean by split in two: cartoon vs. realistic.)  I think that perhaps it will, because it already has happened.  If Spirit Tracks is successful, I think that they will continue to make cartoon Zelda games; however, it’ll probably just be side stories and/or continuing sequels, which brings me to another idea. - The Twilight Princess was successful, and I think that the main storyline will remain in the realistic, life-like Zelda’s with the exception of Wind Waker because it take place somewhere in the future somewhere in the main story-line. Zelda has gotten a little confusing because of the story-line wavering back and forth, but I think that I understand it so far.  These ideas that I have may not be accurate, but the reason why I posted this blog is to see what everyone else thinks about this.

I think that the new Zelda game is going to be interesting.  What I think is weird is that the Zelda world is getting technology and modernizing.  It’s like Nintendo taking Zelda into the early 19 -20 century.  In the Wind Waker, there was a pictograph that you could use to take pictures that looks like a camera if I’m not mistaken.  Cameras use electricity!  Here is an article about pictograms, which are ancient drawings and/or paintings.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pictogram I never played Majora’s Mask, and I’m not sure if you could use the pictograph in that game, but I think that it’s in there. (If you played Majora’s Mask let me know if you use a pictograph.) Now you got a train in the Spirit Tracks game.  Here’s an article about trains that tell when trains were made and more. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Train

Here are the questions that I would like to see input on.  Is Nintendo about to ruin Zelda?  Is Zelda going to have a split between cartoon Zelda and realistic, life-like Zelda? What do you think about the new Zelda game? Do you think that Zelda is slowly, but yet quickly modernizing?  What do ya’ll think about all this? If things sound out of context, tell me what and why you think so.

Well, I’ll see everyone later!  *All Wii owners don’t forget to update your Wii consoles to receive the new SD Card feature, and some other features too.  Also, I have done a review on Pop ‘Em Drop ‘Em SameGame for WiiWare, so if you are interested in buying you can look at my review for some input. There is an extra special surprise that I would like everyone to look at in the previous blog posted.  To everyone, thanks for reading and until next time!

-Sorry for the choppiness of the article guys.  Perhaps the comments might help ya'll better understand where I'm trying to get to.

-Ty

Since it been a few years since the Wind Waker came out, I personally think that WW has aged better that TP did.  Say what you will about the cell-shaded graphics, but I think doing a more stylized game on a console with a bit less horsepower (DS, Wii) makes since.  I think that TP looks a bit off, especially when you are also playing 360/PS3 games.  I would love it if the next Wii game had cell shaded graphics in the style of the original Zelda art:

I love many of the TP areas as much as any of WW. It's not like they went for photo realism or something, the look is still very artistic. Also, good to remember the Wii should be able to do quite a bit better in a dedicated game, TP was a mere port after all. Maybe people keep calling it 2 gamecubes taped together but even that would be able to push better visuals. And really, all I see wrong with TP is the lower res textures abudant in many areas, it still looks great for the most part, though i hate the character faces but that's an issue I have with the art and they're certainly not going for photo realism with them either. Not that I'd mind if they went for a cel shaded look with the next Wii game, but I also expect that to look better than WW. The Wii is not just a GC even if many companies treat it even worse than one and make PSP level visuals...

Agreed.

All they did is replaced the boat from Phantom Hourglass with the train.

"one point i would like to make about this: the zelda games had a core storyline?!?!? seriously each one seems pretty self contained to me, and none of them are direct sequels. does it really matter if they split the games like this though? the simple fact of the matter is so long as the games are good it doesnt matter really. The zelda games have always been great and they have never had a standarised tech for them so the fact they put a train in means jack. Splitting the look just seems you can easily tell which is which, and has no bareing on the game itself. They wont ruin this, they like the franchise too much."
While Nintendo has never announced an official storyline, A number of the games reference eachother. For example, Majoras Mask is a direct Sequel to Ocarina of Time, and Phantom Hourglass is a direct sequel to WInd Waker. Also, Zelda 2 is a direct sequel to The first Zelda. Wind Waker references the Hero of Time, placing it in the distant future of Ocarina of Time. Twilight Princess references to the sealing of Ganon by the sages, which also puts it in the future of Ocarina of Time. Since Ganon appears in Zeldas 1, 2, and LTTP, those all must also be after Ocarina of Time. Minish Cap is believed to be first because it introduces the tradition behind the hat, among other things.

"I don't think there's any official timeline. I see it similar to the Breath of Fire franchise which always has the same item, enemy, character, location, etc names but each one is a whole different adventure with no ties to past games. Well, other than the first two titles which have direct ties. So it's more like they take the core concepts which include Link, Princess Zelda, the Triforce, Ganon, etc, and make whatever new story they want by combining it with whatever new elements they feel like every time. As for haivng a simple steam engine breaking canon, meh, there are far more elaborate machines in the various temples, or even in some of Link's own tools."
Like I said before, there are on a number of occasions, references to past games.

"It's not been confirmed if this is a sequel to Phantom Hourglass yet, and the inclusion of Princess Zelda goes against it being a sequel."
My feeling is that this is the "new world" that link and tetra have found together, and perhaps tetra has had to take a leadership position to stabilize the new kingdom. Im grasping at straws, but thats what I came up with. We'll see when it arrives. (It could also be before the hyrule disaster of wind waker)

That might not be exactly right, and i dont remember where LTTP and Links Awakening go, but thats one of the widely accepted timelines. the splitoff at Ocarina signifies that one is the future where Ganon took over for 3 years, and the other is the future after link went back to the past.

Okay, go ahead and read the part right after the timeline. I DONT REMEMBER. Why don't people read anymore?

lol, i think that he is one of those people that can't take any creativity with his game. Besides, if he thinks that Link was life-like in TP, than he must be easily impressed.

Meh, WW fans seem just as aggressive about what they prefer... I find TP as artistic as WW, with many incredible vistas and set pieces to see. it didn't go for photorealism and fail to achieve it due to the GC's limitations or something, it's clearly got a very stylised approach itself, just very dark and sans cel shading. With crisper textures and some additional details it would look up to par today, imo. That's more than achievable on the Wii considering the sharp textures seen in the Prime games. I'd only like a slight change in the style of the humans' faces.

I've learned to trust Nintendo as well.  I never thought I'd even own a DS but I got one just a few months ago because I missed all my favorite Nintendo franchises.  I was very skeptical about Phantom Hourglass at first, but it was my first DS game and probably still is my favorite, along with the new GTA.  The only thing I had a problem with in Phantom Hourglass was returning to the same temple so many times...this seems to be the number one complaint.

The train gimmick sounds awesome to me, although a bit iffy.  It's strange that they're introducing such a modern concept into this world.  Even stranger because nothing else in the game looks that modern.  But I don't think they're trying to modernize the whole franchise, I think they just saw great opportunities for the train concept as far as exploiting the DS's unique strengths (touchscreen and what not)...and if it conflicts with the timeline or setting at all, then so be it.  People get too serious about stringing all the games together in a timeline, but it really doesn't matter.  They try to keep some consistencies throughout the franchise for the fans, but they're not really interested in making it a tightly knit serial adventure.  Each game is a different experience in its own right...one way of looking at it is to imagine each game as an alternate reality, or even a dream.

The only thing about that trailer that bugs me is that it looks exactly like Phantom Hourglass.  This overall isn't really a big problem, I would have liked to see the franchise reinvent itself again, but then again there are limitations for the hardware and I understand that.  And I think if they were going to reinvent it visually it wouldn't be on a handheld, and while the style that was pioneered by Wind Waker bugged me at first, it actually worked really well for Phantom Hourglass.  When that came out I was beginning to worry that Nintendo was trying too hard to market to kids, and therefore potentially alienating some of their most hardcore fans who remember Zelda back on the SNES...but playing it helped me get rid of that suspicion.  The gameplay still stays true to the classics, despite a few innovations.

I have yet to see any information saying whether or not this is exclusively for the DSi.  I don't even know if they are going to make DSi exclusive games, but if this is one, then I will have a big problem with it...I'm excited for a new Zelda, but I'm not yet ready to buy a new console for it.

Its not going to ruin zelda, but its not going to bring anything real new to the franchise either.  The series needs an interesting overhaul in general.  Dont get me wrong, Ill play through nearly any zelda I can get my hands on, but what I really want to see is a completely new stylization of the series with a focus on new items / gameplay elements.  The way nintendo has been recently seems to suggest I wont see this for a while, but I shall hope for it none-the-less.

Is the Steam Train really all that more modern than the Steam Boat that you controlled in Phantom Hourglass? Other than that, good post.

"The only Zelda worth playing has been The Wind Waker and that's because it was the only one to deviate from the 20 year old mechanics of the game. Complaining about them continuing this new and interesting direction, even just as a spin off, is terrible. Particularly seeing that everything besides the terain seems exactly the same."
Wind Waker was really fun! I loved sailing from island to island, and discovering the secrets that they hold.  Great memories! :D

Well, the other Zelda games aren't bad.  Hopefully, Nintendo will know what they are doing when they introduce the train concept.  Eventhough the concept/mechanics might be the same, Zelda is still good I think.  What Zelda games have you played anyway?"
I agree with that. The thing I loved about Wind Waker was just exploring and finding new things on most of the islands. Even when you had to go fishing to find the triforce shards, I thought that was still pretty fun.I've played Ocarina of Time, Twilight Princess, Link to the Past and Phantom Hourglass. All of them got really boring at the midpoint whereyou find the first set of McGuffins and then get the Master Sword etc. It felt all so samey."
I got uninterested in the games for a little while at midpoint, but I came back to them eventually with a fresh new start and actually played better.  Like on Mario Kart Wii. When I have difficulty with a track and don't play the game for a while, then come back to it, I usually do better and beat my own high scores! If any of that makes sense.

They announced numerous times that the next Zelda would try to reinvent the franchise.

What they had said was that Twilight Princess would be the last "Zelda as we know it" or something along those lines. Phantom Hourglass was already announced and seen at the time, so they couldn't be talking about that, while Spirit Tracks seems to follow the same formula, so it's probably logical to assume they were reffering to the home versions of Zelda when they made that announcement.

Of course, they might have bailed for all we know, maybe they haven't been able to come up with a formula they can be confident with, and have reverted to standard Zelda. It's all possible.

They announced numerous times that the next (persumably home console, as Hourglass was already underway and this new one seems the same) Zelda would try to reinvent the franchise in various ways (probably with an emphasis in taking advantage of the Wii's motion abilities). Thanks for the reply, I had not seen any talk from nintendo about the new Zelda project so thats good to hear.  Well lets be honest, I havent bothered to hear anything new from nintendo unless its an article on GB.  I hope they havent bailed on us lol,  I love the world, characters, and dungeon focus of the Zelda series and would love a new artistic take on it.  Anyway its just a waiting game at this point (I feel like ive said that to myself about a number of games recently /sigh).
