It's been a real pleasure watching you on the internet for so many years. A wonderful constant as my world has changed dramatically over the last decade plus. I know your worlds will have all changed too.

Of course, I'll miss having you all as such a regular part of my entertainment, but I know this must be what's best and a decision you wouldn't have come to lightly.

Best of luck for all of your futures, and may you each find great happiness in whatever you choose to do next in your careers.

You'll forever be duders! I'll smoke you a kipper. Farewell.

Thanks for all your great replies. I've got it now, just got to get through a day at work before I can set it up.

I feel so fortunate to have been able to bag an Oculus Quest 1 for $90 off of Facebook marketplace. I'm picking it up tomorrow.

The Downside:

The reason for the seller selling is that it is mouldy (gross I know, but a common problem where I live (East Asia)).

I'm pretty sure I can get this thing cleaned up with a bit of effort and elbow grease, but I'll know for sure when I get a look at it tomorrow.

The Upside:

I trust the seller completely.

The expat community here is excellent, and I have no reason to doubt this guy. I'm getting a full demo before my purchase, and I'll test the whole thing out to make sure the mould is the only issue.

I used to live in a pretty damp apartment and was able to clean all my electronic stuff pretty easily.

Anyway...

Assuming it all works out and I get a working Quest 1 for a steal of a price, what do I do next?

The games:

I know this thing can be linked to a PC for access to other stores.

Half Life: Alyx: Obviously. The next sale, I'm on it.

Super Hot VR: I played this at a friends house back in the UK years ago on an HTC Vive gen1, and I still remember how amazing it was.

Beyond that I have no idea. I know I can search youtube / google for these, but I always appreciate the insight of the GB Gang.

The Questions:

What are the go-to games in VR? Quest games, and other marketplaces?

What games to you guys recommend?

What is the likelihood of Facebook obsoleting this thing in the near future?

Can Quest 2 games be played on the Quest 1?

What kind of USB-C cable do I need for PC streaming?

My PC is just about VR Ready:

GTX 1070 4GB

i5 6600 @ 3.3Ghz

16GB Ram

I know the CPU is a bit dodgy for VR. What kind of performance can I expect?

Once again, I know that there's a lot of questions here, and that I could search online for most/all of the answers, but I do really appreciate the input of the GB community.

I can still get out of this purchase, but for this price, it's worth a go, even if it doesn't work out.

Thank you in advance for all that take the time to share their knowledge/experiences.

Last time I paid full price was RDR2, and I'm sure I'll get the next GTA day one. Aside from that it's game pass, and deep sales with Microsoft reward points for the occasional Ubisoft game as they never seem to hit gamepass. But those games are generally all the same and waaay too long so one of those every 2-3 years is enough.

As I get older, time is limited and gamepass has me 95% covered.

Call of Duty's TTK (Time to kill) is way too short and I have no interest in playing it until it's gets longer.

This grudge started when Halo MP started getting too close to CoD after Halo 4. I know it's irrational.

@topcyclist

If you let your Ultimate expire, it's my understanding that you can then redeem up to 3x 12 Month Gold Cards, and then pay for one month of Ultimate and convert the full three years to Ultimate. But you have to have let your current ultimate subscription lapse first.

If you still have Ultimate active, any other subs you add will convert to ultimate, but not 1-1, as @reap3r160 said: 12 months of Gold will convert to 4 months of Ultimate. There's a table in the FAQ section of this Microsoft page.

Whilst I don't like to direct people away from GB, Resetera has multiple threads on this: Here's the most recent one. Those guys and gals are way more on top of this than I am. Have a read through that thread, and I'm certain you'll find the info you need.

Tiny nit-pick: Ori has an ‘s’ at the end of its title. There are multiple wisps in the game.

On Topic: It’s good to have a list here to refer to, but no shame on the staff for not doing a full write up, in my opinion. It would be nice, but not essential, and GOTY is in the past now.

#haloGOTY2021

Let’s hope it can deliver, it’s my most anticipated game for sure.

Congrats to the crew for an excellent and enjoyable GOTY week.

In the interests of avoiding anything that might even be considered a spoiler, I've spoiler blocked my post. I don't discuss plot at all, just referring to a single, popular game mechanic, the jump scare, in a general way.

Got to a major generic jump scare last night, so I closed and uninstalled it.

I know this is what Horror games are, but I find it cheap and a crutch when games could do so much more than this for their thrills. It's a pity, because they we're doing so well until this moment. Would never have bought it without GamePass, so nothing lost I guess. I'm glad I got to enjoy it for as long as I did.

I realise that what I'm looking for is pretty specific, and I don't blame others for enjoying this sort of thing. I just feel games, unlike most "teen-horror style" movies which are stuck as being non-interactive, could do so much more with nuanced, subtle changes to the environment. Warped shadows that touch on the uncanny valley, but are barely perceptible, that sort of thing. And the big one, natural (in world) sound effects like telephones, footsteps, creaks, etc are much more effective for me than loud noises for the sake of it.

I just end up waiting for them, thinking about what the developers have planned, rather than the story or the atmosphere. I'd rather be creeped out psychologically, instead of having my lizard brain attacked with a false scare.

There's a small moment with a cat in the first minutes of the game, that's the sort of thing I'm looking for. Spooky moments, in world, without simply maxing the gain on the audio for the, in my opinion, unearned 'jump' effect.
