I was hoping for a battlefield bc2 release for this christmas, but it looks like thats not going to happen.

Mafia is not really an open-world game as say GTA, it's a linear game that takes place in an open world environment, you just go from mission to mission. It's not really generic, they really did bring something new to the genre and the setting. If anything I'd say that GTA4 is a poor mans Mafia. At least when it comes to story and atmosphere.
 
Not that I'm getting the sequel or anything, hated the first one, not my thing. But it really was a unique title for it's time and no doubt a quality product.

oh well people like sequels, I like sequels alot because it's my favorite games from last year made better.

I'll just say that my list for this holiday season is pretty short, but I'm sort of glad because it may convince me to buy a PS3 (thanks to the price drop) and catch up on everything I've missed there like MGS4 and Valkyria Chronicles.
