@MiamiRedHawks: My daughter is only 7 and I don't think she's that dedicated to playing the game. She just likes the monsters. In fact, when I handed the DS to her tonight and said, "do you wanna play?" She paused and said, "is it okay if I play something else instead? I want to play Nintendogs."

Ironic, because Nintendogs is another  game that doesn't allow you to have multiple save files. I'm noticing a trend here. A quick inventory of my DS games gives me a 50/50 ratio; 50% allow multiple saves, 50% allow only one.

I guess the storage limitations make it understandable, but it's still lame!

I am extremely  disappointed that Dragon Quest 9 only allows you to have one game save. I bought this thinking that my daughter and I could play different adventures using the same cartridge and DS. But, it turns out, they only let you have one save per cart! So, what, if I want to have two saves I have to buy another copy of the game?!

Lame!

I like the game so far, but the one-save thing is irksome. I wish they'd allow you to save to the system memory.

Anybody know of a way around this one-save nonsense?

@demontium: I'd say it depends on what type of player you are. If you're the type that only plays it for an hour a day then it's great! However if you're the type to play for three or more hours a day then DQ9 is gonna get old fast.

DQ9 is very traditional Dragon Quest game; think Chrono Trigger or Final Fantasy 6 (3 in the US). It's got many of the same interface annoyances as those old games and the battle system expects you to do a fair amount of grinding. But, if you're playing for only an hour a day, which is my habit, then it never feels too repetitive.

I haven't gotten too far in DQ9 yet, but I've gotten far enough to see that it's much like other DQ games. I've played all of DQ8 and a good deal of DQ4 and I found that those games were best played in hour-long chunks as well.  When I played either of those games on the weekend, where I had three hour chunks of time to sit and play, I didn't enjoy them nearly as much and I found myself getting bored of them. So, I'd say, the Dragon Quest games are best in small, daily doses.

Vanille's repetitive grunts and moans are annoying, similar to

  • link's shouting in Ocarina of Time
  • and everyone in Left 4 Dead yelling "Reloading!"
And just like those games, while it's annoying, it doesn't ruin the game.

P.S. I laughed out loud the first time I saw Vanille run! Wahaha!
