@toughshed: It's definitely not perfect, but it felt more impactful. More like people were actually engaged in battle and less like they were rubbing each other's weapons on each other. Flowed better too, DA: O always felt like they really, REALLY wanted it to be Baldur's Gate, but it never got to that epic level. Which worked for the tone, but it made combat feel like it should have picked a lane.
@devise22: No to derail this discussion, but I know what you mean for DA: O's combat. I really, REALLY got into the story and certain characters at the time, but the combat looked like an SCA group got ahold of some high-end special effects and overlaid them on a day in the life.
Ironically I found the combat (and characters) far more compelling in 2, but that's another story.
I've gone back to Homestar Runner in recent months, and a) that show holds UP and b) they're still producing new content every now and again. But I really miss a new SBemail being the talk of the school. Also: holy SHIT, H*R might be almost as big as The Simpsons in terms of its influence on old and modern internet culture/references.
In a bigger sense: The City of Heroes in-game community was always fantastic. Fun and inviting, the raids never got big or complex enough to need stat crunching and "perfect play," so people generally didn't get loud and shitty if you misclicked. There were high-level people camped at rookie spawn-points who'd dole out currency if you had an especially bold design, or an in-depth, well-written (at least for being free online) origin in your stats screen. It felt like the game was existing in a space where the "right" way to play an MMO wasn't so calcified.
Then City of Villains came out alongside the "Headquarters" update and things changed for the worse. It was suddenly all about recruitment and one-upsmanship, and it got a lot less open and a lot more clique-y. Dunno how it ended up, but I wasn't there when the dust settled.
It's hard to be a very empathetic person right now cause eeeeeeeeeeeverything is cranked waaaaaaaaaaaaay up. I've personally been meditating and exercise a LOT more to try and manage anxiety/misery/over-empathy, so try that for your own well-being, and that transitions nicely to the main point: your well-being is important. It is. You have to accept that.
If you're having THIS averse of a reaction to a friend making a bad call in their own life, you might have to distance a bit. If they get hurt again, it's not going to be your problem, but you're going to feel like it is. Sometimes the people we love can't help themselves, and sometimes it's okay to just let whatever's going to happen-happen.
I had to break things off with a VERY good friend somewhat recently because they just WOULD NOT take steps to better their situation. They liked to complain about how awful their lot was, but LITERAL opportunities would come and go and they'd ignore them because some people cannot be helped. You can still be there if your friend needs to call or contact you, I'm not saying abandon them: I'm saying you can't actively keep track of/help them unless/until they want to help themselves at least SOMEWHAT.
This isn't some "they need to pull themselves up by their boostraps" "motivated self-interest" horseshit, I'm not telling you your compassion makes you weak or a victim or anything shitty like that, what I'm saying is: toxicity comes in a lot of different forms, and it's not always a shithead shrieking something awful through a microphone. Sometimes it's someone who puts themselves into bad situations and needs more help than what a friend can offer. But you can still be there if things go badly again, but what you can't do is rub it in their face or try to turn their pain into a "teachable moment." Just be there and try to help, but know: if they don't want your help, you can't force them to listen and for your own good, you may need to get some distance.
For me? Personally? Absolutely. My wife and I spend $20 on tickets, another $10 on popcorn, $10 on snacks etc., so some dipshit can play amateur MST3K and try out their "tight 5" on who's fuck-worthy while we're trying to watch America's Ass save the day.
Honestly, that's about what other streaming services are charging for "new" movies (Invisible Man, Trolls World Tour, etc.), but the fact that it's on their already-existing streaming service is definitely a bone of contention. The other is: just because I hate the experience of going to a theater, doesn't mean I want it to be unavailable for anyone.
So in a vacuum: I'm gonna grumble, but I'm fine paying for it (not this one in-particular, the whole 'live-action remake of our IPs for copyright reasons" is a whole other kettle of hands), but I do not want movie theaters to all shut down permanently, especially the smaller ones going for a boutique experience (more expensive tickets, but bigger seats, better concessions, etc.).
So I'd still love to go to theaters for stuff like a special screening or a smaller experience, but paying $20-30 to stream onto my TV while we make nachos and enjoy the silence? I'm here for it.
CONGRATS!!! As much as "Giant Bomb Relationship Hotline" was (largely, rightly) derided back in the day, I think "Giant Bomb Baby Help Hotline" could actually be a pretty great community service. I'll just recommend Monster Train as well as an easy start->stop game (though it's also VERY prone to "one...more...turn" behavior).
If Im going to pay $70 for a game I expect the whole game at least. Non of this in-game store in single player, its bad practice anyway but when a game costs that much its unacceptable.
The #1 bullshit justification for splintering games up and adding F2P microtransactions to full-price games has been because game prices "haven't gone up," which was largely bullshit (wages haven't either, so...).
Not like we can do much, other than not buy as much, but I have a sinking feeling we're going to be looking at "$70 gets you the bare minimum version, $80 for the "deluxe" version, microtransactions aren't going anywhere."
- Alpha Protocol: completely rework the boss fights to be something more dynamic than direct shootouts with bullet sponges (especially the Russian gangster)
This seems to be more 'take a flawed game you like and make it better," so I have beaten this game 3 times with 3 fairly different builds and the boss fights suck for every. Single. Character-type. The Russian gangster one is especially egregious if you haven't done the optional, missable Steve Heck recruitment by that point (the fight is essentially impossible).
-A Persona game where your S.Links actually get acknowledged in the storyline.
This is the dream, and probably not terribly practical with how many permutations it COULD have, but it's a little disheartening to see such an integral part of the game essentially side-lined as "optional content." It makes it feel less impactful, especially in situations like what Persona 4 presents. Even "Royal's" add-on content felt VERY linear compared with "The Golden's."
All Systems Goku was too beautiful for this world. Perfect time, place, and content.
I love Film & 40s, but there's so much setup (and it REALLY doesn't work standalone, separate from the movies) that it gets disqualified. Power Bombcast has a special place in my heart for making me PISSED they didn't turn Roman supernatural and have him absorb Undertaker's powers...
