Games That Have Actually Scared Me

I don't play a lot of horror games, and not all of these are horror games, but these are the games that have really gotten into my head and kept me awake at night.

List items

  • What do you find more horrifying: a zombie dog jumping through a window? Or the idea that World War I, one of the most bloody and lethal conflicts of all time, was started by worshipers of an ancient evil who were trying to find a way to get more corpses to feed the guardian of their temple? Your answer will directly affect how much this game frightens you.

  • This game did exactly what it purported to do: it got in my head and made me afraid of what was going to happen next.

  • Builds tension like an expert mason constructing a wall.

  • STILL scary after all these years. If you can get past the dated graphics and let your imagination run away with the setting, it's still a very effective game.

  • The only people who suffer for their wishes are the ones who wish for something good.

  • Finding the journal pages about how the Las Plagas were evolving and procreating made this more frightening than perhaps it had any right to be.

  • As a writer, I have to say the intro where a man chased you screaming what a hack you are and how you'll never write another book again actually hit me in a very personal place.

This is a great list. I never actually finished Cthulhu, got to the part where you had to escape from jail. The combat was just bad. Definitely a game I'd like to try finishing someday.
