Games I've Enjoyed Playing: 2014 Edition

It's been a goddamn long time since I've done any type of update or list so it's time to get back on the skytrain and let ya'll know what I've been playing this year. Also I've been broke and still have quite the backlog so expect mostly older stuff.

List items

  • First game I cleared of the year and on Jan 1st to boot! Loved the demo on PC and ended up playing through all of the 3DS version. Real cool game with great songs.

  • What the hell with all these indie portable games? I don't know but I have been keeping my eyes on this game back when it was announced for Wii ware and well I'm glad it ended up somewhere. Real cool ambiance and tone. Need to finish it up someday.

  • Man it's Tetris. What do you need to know? It's a great game to play while listening to podcasts or hell doing anything really.

  • The game that just keeps giving. Man I love this game. Trying to rainbow every level and I'm almost there. Dance Tikiman, Dance!

  • This may not be Vinny's bag but I love this series. Nothing is more relaxing than some early morning fishing.

  • Transitioning into a stay-at-home dad has been something and Skyrim sucked up my free time something fierce. It was still fun coming back to that world after a long hiatus but I have to value my productivity levels.

  • This is the only mobile game that I've liked enough to come back to. Great small bursts of gaming and hella positive reinforcement. Also gotta admit I like the PS3 version best. Buttons!

  • I don't know how they do it, but EAD Tokyo makes exactly the type of games that I love to play. 3D World is no exception. This was easily my game of the year for 2013 and I'm still trying to 100% it. Can't wait for what's next from the greatest game developers on the planet.

  • This is like the 3rd version of this game I own now(Wii U) and it's still as playable as it was on the SNES. I consider this the best post original series Mega Man game, well if you don't count 9 that is.

  • Mega Man on my 3DS? Hell yeah! Missed this original release, but I'm glad I got the Blue Bomber on a portable.

  • The impending Tropical Freeze inspired me to fire this game up again. It's still fun waggle roll be damned!

  • Certainly an early candidate for soundtrack of the year. Tropical Freeze basically fixes every issue I had with Returns, and maintains the amazing level design and rewarding challenge. Hey guys the Wii U does have games!

  • Hey the first Runner game was fucking awesome, and this game is pretty good too. I still prefer the difficulty of OG Runner though, and the lack of obnoxious cutscenes/story elements. Just let the man run already. Geez.

  • I had been following this game since it was first announced 42 years ago or whatever and still after it did release waited for it to go on sale. Anyways ended up loving it and remaining faithful to Ska Studios.

  • Probably one of the few PC games on the list. I admittedly didn't make it very far but the trial and error gameplay is totally addicting. And hey the music and the neon motif is really amazing.

  • This is what I'm talking about! Old school style, unforgiving difficulty, and badass ninjas! These are the type of games I gravitate towards and desperately wish there were more of. It's a steal for 10 bucks and hey a Luigi stylus came with it to. That's neat.

  • Gotta love Club Nintendo points and free games. I've beaten Super Mario World probably 30 times in my life, but I still keep coming back to it. Just an amazing 2d platformer.

  • This has been my go-to podcast game as of late. Just hit mute and grind achievements. Algol is my boy!

  • This game's reputation just kept growing and growing and I said it's my 30th birthday fuck it I'm getting Demon's Souls. Really cool art design and somber tone. Not being able to pause makes this the impossible dad game.

  • I was totally sold on this game from the first kickstarter video I saw of it and holy shit the wait was long. But the wait was worth it and it was good friends, damn good.

  • You know I love me some Mario Kart and this addition is the tightest, most gorgeous, entry. It previewed so well and I have a feeling Nintendo released this with a lot of confidence in its quality. It's the kart racer to be topped.

  • THIS GAME YOU GUYS! Holy crap where has XCOM been all my life? I'm a total idiot at strategy games but this one hooked me deep and I'm probably going to be a lifer now. If this wasn't a 2012 game I'd be my Game of the Year this year. Super accessible and endlessly addicting. OVERWATCH!

  • All of the weird ass youtube videos of this game really worked as far as putting this game on my radar. At a time when I felt that Animal Crossing was the only "Sim" game I wanted, this was the last thing I thought I would want. But here we are and it's odd and really funny.

  • Another fun puzzle adventure with Patricia Wagon! But with fire hoses! Loved the first game and the second is just as fun, just not as pretty.

  • This is the first tablet game that became an addiction. Being a huge wrestling fan probably helps with the enjoyment of this game. This was my go to game of the summer and I feel no shame!

  • I remember hearing good things about this years ago and finally got around to checking it out. The praise holds up and yeah it's great! Simple clean presentation, easy to grasp concept, and all pulled off quite elegantly.

  • Oldie but a goodie! Man this was my jam back in the day! Unfortunately Mario Kart 8 makes this one hard to go back to. This game represents me really honing my powerslide game. It's still an important skill I use to this very day!

  • I love Tetris Attack and this is pretty much that. Such a good puzzle game. Shame about the lacking Yoshi's Island theme though. I miss that.

  • Rayman Legends is such a fun joyous happy ride! It's not my preferred platformer but it's goofy nature is quite welcomed in this self serious gritty mature modern era of games.

  • Early Christmas present. Only played the first chapter or so. Pretty sure this is something truly special. Will update later.
