I am curious on what you will think about Gothic II, which I played, almost to the end, but end dropping it (at the time due to need to reinstall windows) and never returning. Also, your comment on PB getting worst at each try feel so on point. I think PB might get itself in a weird position, where they had to balance recapturing lighting in a bottle (the original game), while also under pressure to adapt new conventions and polish (to maybe get a wider audience), all of this with likely diminishing resources.

It is curious to think that with Inquisition and specially the last DLC end it looks that despite all troubles, they sort at least had a good idea where to go next... but between everything that happened, I wonder how much was left, if any, of the original ideas since it very likely the project had several resets and between the people leaving.

I still think that we might see the end result, but I expect more delays.

Sometimes I wonder if those weird tonal shifts and a by product of writers trying too hard to pull off plot twists upon plot twists, while also trying to imitate a style of writing, which likely they aren't familiar nor had the time to fully understand.

What I find fascinating about games (or media projects) of this period is that by often being made by media companies (or something in between), that often had access (or knowledge) to resources and often actors, but often had little idea of what make a game is meant to be. So you can end with something which features some out of box ideas and high visual values, but many times would trip over on the game aspects, resulting in a weird "uncanny valley of video game would be". I think this is a lot, specially after watching a Macaw45 stream about the game Midnight Stranger.

I do wonder why Lost Eidolons choose that visual style, because what they did isn't cheap, simple or easy and to be fair it is pretty impressive in terms of modelling and render. However, it is bit trick to use it, as fabric and hair is hard to do, you can end with impressive models, but limited/rigid fabrics and hair, also without very good animations and light, thing can also look stiff. I wonder if it would be better if they choose another style, because the actual result, while impressive is also a bit generic too.

The fact that Dragon Lore II is lost to time baffles me, because it was such a huge jump in all aspects of quality and a way better game... I say this, but the jousting mini-game was infuriating, it was rather easy at one point to soft lock yourself if you don't buy a rather expansive item until a certain point (after which you can no longer do it)...

@valorianendymion: The "Adventure games are dead" sentiment predates that style of writing.

The Myst backlash started almost immediately on release. There's a lot of people who blame the combo of Myst/Riven/et al from one side and Doom/Quake/etc on the other, for the decline of "traditional" adventure games as a big flagship genre.

The Longest Journey (1999) is grouped with classic point and clicks now. But at the time it was already considered a throwback of sorts, and even deliberately included the obtuse/terrible 'rusty grill rubber duck' puzzle as a tribute to the older games of the style.

By the time the famous Old Man Murray article (September 11 2000) on the "Cat Hair Mustache" puzzle from Gabriel Knight 3 came around, the "death" of adventure games was already established in the culture.

Oh, that is fascinating, I didn't know that. I had an impression (a wrong one) that was something which happened later.

Amazing essay! Your comments on the myths surrounding the "death of adventure games" and the "myst/riven slander", make me wonder when this exactly started, because it feels so much of a period, which I can't pinpoint, but I felt was marked by people trying way too hard to be cynical or jaded therefore they might be looking for targets (not just adventure games, but other genres too), add to this the phenomenon of "some said something and other people just repeated".

Hold on, this game is sparking some memories here. Was this game not done by the original creator of Ragnarok Online after he got ousted?

I am surprised it is still around but I guess a ton of MMO's have found their place on the internet.

Yeah, this is the one, but I am not sure if he still involved on the mmo.

I have a feeling that the reason of why some background look strange, it is because they used real photos and only applied a handful of effects, which can sometimes work, Higurashi/Uminekko does use it a lot in their original versions, but here not so much, it is tricker, because the idea is the bg is more a suggestion (like in a theater) and the focus is the characters sprites (and this appears to play against, since this game sprite art is not good) and more important the story (also worth of note, the story isn't told in small box below, but in the center of the screen).
