My experience of trying to get into League of Legends.

I had zero experience with MOBA type games. I figured I really should at least try them out. League of Legends is free? Great!

The tutorial tells you how to move and attack, but tells you approximately bubkis about how to be good at an actual game. The fact that you can play games against the AI is great, because you can get familiar with the mechanics and the abilities of your chosen hero. I quickly felt like I got the basics down. As long as I was playing a ranged character, I didn't die much per game, and made good progress in my lane.

I got into beginner level matches with other people who were new to this game and it was very fun. The game does a great job in making you feel useful even when all you're doing is killing the minions. If I wouldn't be here, they would just walk by, right? The feeling of doing something good for your team even when you're actually completely useless is an awesome thing for a multiplayer game to pull off, because it doesn't immediately discourage  people from at least trying it out. I got familiar with my hero's abilities and started using them in some cool ways. (If I use that knock-enemy-away ability while BEHIND the actual enemy, I can knock them into the firing range of my tower, yay!)

So, League of Legends is great. It's an interesting spin on a team based multiplayer game. I can easily see myself having this game installed forever and get a game or two in every few days.

But then I ended up in games against people who have played this game a bunch.

The League of Legends community I ran into was the worst group of people I know of. I'm a super patient person and I can tolerate an unhealthy amount of shit before I freak out, but dude, the people who play League of Legends and ended up in my game are terrible, completely disgusting excuses for a human being. I played several games so my sample size is pretty big, so I feel justified in saying this.

Note that I didn't suck in my games. I super-rarely gave anyone a reason to scream at me.

95% of the time I got called names and hated on because I was low level without even getting a chance to play.

I got into a game, had 3 different people yell NOOOOOOB at me. Then the game started and I was the person who destroyed all the towers in the lane I chose at the start. Game ended with a win, and those same 3 people were still pissed off about the fact how they got shit noob people in their team.

The PvP button looks like the scariest thing ever at this point. If winning a game against an AI is still grounds of people telling you how you're absolute shit and should feel bad for playing the game, what the hell will happen in PvP games?

Fuck that.

The DOTA community has never been a receptive one. It's why I usually scream "LEEEEEROY JEEEENKINS!" and then run into the enemy base over and over till all my teammates quit.

Yeah, I watched my younger brothers play this when I was visiting my old home this weekend. More often than not the other players seemed like massive dicks, and half of those people didn't even play well. That is one of the biggest reasons why I don't play much multiplayer in any game.

But LoL seemed kinda fun, so I think I might try it out. I'll just have to ignore most of the chat.

My favourite moment was when nothing of interest was happening in my lane and I saw 3 enemy heroes in the lane next to me. I started making my way through the jungle to get behind the enemy heroes and had everybody yell SHITCUNT, WTF ARE YOU DOING at me.

I proceeded to kill all three of the enemy heroes there and made my way back to my lane.

...

Everyone still finished the insults they had thought out already.

Personally, I rarely find idiots in LoL. Sure, they are there, but damn man, just ignore them, and play with some friends.

And I had heard the LoL community was the nice one.

Well I don't play it anymore, but that's more because the name calling happens in my head regardless, too much stress.

If you ever get a sense that the enemy team or your team will be ignorant assholes, you could /ignore enemy or /mute enemy. You could easily mute individual people now by holding down Tab and click on the button on the most right side of the scoreboard to ignore them. After you play a few dozen games, it becomes more easy to brush them off. Just play for fun!

Yeah and I'm sure Dominion will bring out more enjoyable games since the average game ends in 20 minutes....not compared to the 20 minute straight stompfest in Summoners Rift :P

@iDarktread: /ignore enemy, /ignore ally and /ignore all.

I personally don't get a lot of shitheads. Maybe it's because of where I'm at, ELO wise.

In general though, the MOBA community is a cess pool. Find people to play 5's with and enjoy!

Have you considered that you might actually be fucking up in some way that's completely beyond you since you have no idea you are even doing it yet? Don't get me wrong, people ARE fucking retarded but it seems weird that you always get called out.

It's weird that I keep hearing how horrible the LoL community can be.  I'm currently level 12 and I can probably count on one hand how many times I've met a guy who is just an absolute dick.  I have actually made quite a few friends on there and introduced them to Giantbomb.  In my personal experience I've had more people hate on me in TF2 or any CoD game than I have in LoL.

Edit: Also, feel free to add me if you still play my ID is iBePeRFeKT.  I'm still learning the game myself but I'm always up for playing a couple of games with someone who wants to be a team player.

@Ventilaator: It's called responsibility, dude. League of Legends is a team-based game and matches are won and lost on team work. But when matches go wrong, 90% players are going to look anywhere else other than themselves for a reason why they lost the match, so that means calling you and everyone else a 'stupid fucking feeder noob'. You just gotta be pretty thick-skinned to play in solo queue. You can tell the immature or terrible players because they finish lost matches with 'NOOB TEAM' instead of 'gg' or 'well played'.

The advantage of this, is when you find yourself in an amazing team full of really nice people - the game is so intense and so much fun!

The LoL community sucks massively. Play with the Giant Bombers.

In most games, the "noob" yelling started as soon as I loaded into the pre-game menu, so that can't be the case.

I just played my first co-op match, it looks like people are in there just to grind exp with fast matches. I would guess that if you were playing a support class or possibly a low damage tank, they would be mad that you were possibly slowing the match.

You can play the game by yourself in a 1v1 bot match, this can be setup under custom games, it's only available during off hours though.

@Ventilaator: I really love LoL.  For a simple game with one map, its so dynamic and deep that its almost impossible to get bored.  MOBA games are definitely some of the best MP games when done well.

That said, I dont really have a problem with rounding up 75% of the players into concentration camps to preform every horrible, and or painful act to be ever conceived, that may or may not advance science.  Just some of the worst human beings in the world......I mean its fucking depressing to know those people are out there.  I wish they would take my advice and remove chat from the game for simple ping commands.

I've only been playing LoL for a short time, and I never played DotA. I haven't yet encountered true assholes except people who disconnect when things get bad. It's also worth noting I've only played one game against humans; the rest against bots. That said, how is this new or restricted to LoL/MOBA games? During COD or Halo I've been told all manner of unpleasant things about my mother and her sexual antics. Of all the hateful horrid things I've heard, I know it would be ten times worse if I were a woman.

My black roommate used to scream things like, "No, motherfucker, why don't YOU go eat some chicken!" Afterward, he would fume for a while as all the racist stuff he'd heard would percolate from his brain to his gut; then he would complain to me.

"You know you can mute them, right?" I asked.

"Yeah, but that's not the point," he said.

"Sure it is. If you know about the mute button, and there are people there you aren't communicating with except to exchange hate, then that's part of the experience for you. It's a feature. If they say something ugly, mute them, and go back to playing the game."

If someone hands you a pile of shit, you don't have to put it on your mantle. You flush it down the toilet like they ought to have done to begin with. When one guy in LoL was a jackass, I just /ignored him, and suddenly he was a figment of my imagination. If you're only playing with online strangers in pick-up games, I agree with the poster above who recommended you find friends you can 5 with and just do that. For extra fun, communicate over Teamspeak or Steam voice chat so you can ignore the in-game chat altogether.

People being rude and aggressive online used to really bother me but I just ignore it these days and use things like mute and /ignore to deal with it.  I'm also pretty open to suggestions and criticism of my playing from people who are polite about it.

I tried getting into LoL and I just can't. It's fairly fun in terms of gameplay, but the people that actually exist around that cesspool of a community are just...shit. People act as if they never started doing something for the first time ever.

@ImpureAscetic: He's not angry at those people saying to him. He's angry at people saying it in general.  You really didn't get the point. It's not about the personal damage, it's about the fact that those sorts of people exist, at all.

Yup, this sounds about right. I dont get why people find it better to insult new people then to try and help them. I am still new and help newer people then me when I play with them. But there is always that one guy one your team who has to be a complete dick for no reason. It is pathetic. Luckily the game is super fun, I just end up ignoring them.

Some players will automatically judge you just on your summoner abilities you've picked in the pre-game. Although you have to pick a champ first for others to see it. Are you using Revive, or Rally? Or playing as Sivir? I don't know. I always play with a friend so we can laugh at/double team whatever douchebaggery we run into, but that's rare as long as we play decently.
