13 years of school done. What happens next?

Okay, later tonight (in about 3-4 hours) I'll receive my high school diploma, proving 13 years of hard work and acquiring unbelievable amounts of useless information. Its been a roller-coaster ride of highs and lows. The joy and carelessness of elementary school, the awkward phase at middle school and three years of happiness at high school.
Just to clear things up, the education system in Norway is a bit different from that in the States.

Elementary school span the grades 1 through 7 (age 6-13)
Middle School, or Junior High span the grades 8-9-10 (age 14-16)
And finally, High School, grades 11 through 13 (age 17-19)

Anyways. That is all over and done with. Now, what will I do next? Luckily I have all my plans laid out for at least the next six years.
In August this year, right after the summer vacation I'm joining the army. Here we have a somewhat optional service period that lasts about a year or so. Approximately  4 out of 10 males between 18-20 years get drafted for service, If you don't want to serve, it's really easy to get out. But I do want to serve, as it will give me a much needed break from school and education.

After my year in the armed forces I will begin my bachelor-degree in journalism at a college in Oslo, this will be three very interesting years, as journalism has fascinated me for years. After receiving my degree I will take a break, before completing the education with a Masters-degree. During this break i really want to travel, you know, see the world. I've traveled quite a lot, but never for long periods of time. I want to go on a cross-country road trip through the States, or backpacking through Europe.
Unfortunately this probably won't happen in the near future. As a student, my economy will be in ruins and I'll have to work to save up money, but someday, I promise you, it will happen.

I want to get my Masters-degree abroad, in either Australia or England. Along side the excitement of living in another country, it will provide experience that might be useful when applying for a job. Hopefully I will end up in gaming journalism, as this obviously is a part of my life. The ideal situation is that I stay in this business until i retire, but I can't really see that happening.

Anyways, just wanted to share my thoughts on the future with the fine members of this site, and also ask this question.
What are your plans for the future? Or, for those of you who might be a bit older. Did your plans turn out the way you wanted?

Nope.

Good luck, sounds like you're one of the few that actually know what they want to do for a living.

@Ahmad_Metallic:  I'm no expert, but it sounds like your not too happy with the situation. Maybe you should do some "soulsearching" and figure out what you really enjoy, something you can enjoy for the rest of your life, and work it out from there...

It sounds like you have your life planed out and that's good.  I've graduated in May 2008 and I'm still in a pickle on what I want to do with my life.  After high school, life gets tough.    :(

What happens next? Well, I sat for a couple of years on my ass getting money for not working. Then I went to Folkehøyskole, then I sat on my ass for a couple years getting paid for doing nothing and then I started working and got less money for busting my ass.

My plan is to escape the country, becoming a pirate and be rich..

Aim in life is to become a voice actor. Already done 3 years in a performing arts course which isn't specifically directed at voice work, it was still a good start.

I think it's pretty accurate when I say prepare to have all the dreams and expectations you've built up for yourself throughout all those years to be crushed to pieces, and expect almost nothing to go as you've planned...

@destruktive: Probably the most awesome time of my life. (For those of you who don't know what russ is, I refer you to my previous blog about the Norwegian phenomena that is the Russ)

Anyways, that sounds like an awesome plan. Will you be one of those lame-ass modern pirates, with AKs and RPGs , or the awesome traditional one, with a massive ship, swords and cannons??

i don't really have plans in the future. i waited for the last minute to figure out what i was going to do for college. i'm still doing school it's going alright. i have one more semester then i am done with school for now.

just to tell you, your plans might change like a snap. my friend had diagnosed with emphysema even though he doesn't smoke. (kind of funny). he had plans to join the air force but since the emphysema he kind of had to cancel those plans for now. he has to get checked sometime to see if he still has it.

it is crazy that your school has 13 years. in america we have 12 years, 1-12.

Well. Money wise, it's hard starting to be a pirate.
So I'm probably going to rock a small boat at first. Instead of a sword it'll be something like a stick.. or a plastic guitar. I got a bunch of those.
And you'd be surprised how hard a guy can throw rocks when he wants your money.

Still have another two years of highschool left, and it would be my last year in September if I didn't stop going to school for a year. I'm going to work my ass off these last two years and hopefully be accepted at UBC. I'm not entirely sure what classes I'll be taking, but I've always had a thing for writing and astronomy. If I can't figure out what I want to do after highschool, the military has always been in mind. But I'm not really worried yet, I'm just concentrated on getting highschool over with. Over here, highschools are Grade 8-12, which means I'm stuck with screaming little 13 year olds in the same school. Not fun.

@VIGGO123:
Super annoying. By the end of my senior year I'll be 19 and going to the same school as 13-14 year olds. And damn are the 8th graders ever noisy :/

The dropping out thing came from a lot of stress. Every single day I went to school there would always be arguments and drama, and I wasn't motivated at all with schoolwork and ended up skipping and failing most of my classes. So one day about a month into 10th grade, I just got tired of dealing with that stuff every day and never went back. The year I spent at home after that changed me and allowed me to grow up a bit, and near the end of that year I got tired of doing nothing with my life and got my ass back in school. Dropping out ain't cool!

Im at kinda the same stage as you. Going into my last year of high school next year and then  I'm probably going to take a year out and teach maths and science abroad before going to university and doing a course in Product Design Engineering. It's a five year course and chances are I will have employment straight after graduating so I'll see where that takes me.

I graduated after 13 years on Wednesday. I'm in Norway as well. I'm going to be studying for a bachelor in Game Design at NITH in Oslo after the summer. No military for me, luckily. I have a body shaped by almost two decades of gaming and ignoring physical activities... I'm gonna keep living with my mom since school is so close, and I've been trying to get a job for the summer.

@Bennyishere: Good luck with that. Game design seems very interesting. I'll be going to HiO, and event though I also live near Oslo, i probably won't stay with my mom, but I won't get an apartment in Oslo either, cause its so fucking expensive. Maybe I'll get an apartment in the area where I live now, they are pretty cheap.

@Rehehelly:
Yeah, well sort of.  We get called in to  an evaluation when we're 17-18, and after some IQ tests and a health check we get asked whether we'd like to serve or not. If you say no, you probably wont get drafted, and even though you say yes, I can be hard to get in. I think only 3 out of 10 get drafted.

As for me, I'll study something related to marketing in university, and take journalism as an alternate subject. I'll be applying some time in December this year.
That means SAT in October.

@Rehehelly: Well, actually the thing with being drafted in Norway, or Sweden where I live, is that very few get to do it. When you turn 18 you get a message where they tell you to go to a website and answer some questions regarding your health, physical attributes and basically what you feel about the armed forces. After some time they get back to you and tell you about the result and again not many get through even if they want. Those who do get through however, have to go through some tests and if you are "lucky" you just might get to serve.

Very interesting system and completely different from the system in Ukraine, where I come from. There you get drafted whether you like it or not and maybe, if you're "lucky", you'll survive.

Seems like you already know what happens next. You at least know what you want to do, and that's a luxury few people have (or so it seems). My plans are pretty much to try and get better psychologically and get a stable income of money. After that, I can start to think about what I want to do properly.

Graduated from Uni when I was 22 with a masters degree in business and russian economic history.  Never used it.  Had been studying at catering college and working in kitchens at the same time so went into cooking.  Travelled around working in different kitchens in the world, learning cuisines.  Now 27 and have my own kitchen consultancy business advising new establishments, putting menus into place, helping them get staff, training the staff and just generally getting them started on the right track.  I'm doing what I love and i'm so happy I never went down the office route.  I get to travel somewhere a minimum of every month and its great fun.
